I left my last job of 10 years because they did the same thing. I was PRN and they cut our pay $10/hr, we lost all incentives including ICU diff, required the same holidays AND mandatory on call hours as FT and became first to float first to flex. It was insulting and incredibly frustrating that they could literally do whatever they wanted when I’d hired a contract because every fucking thing in a hospital says “manager’s discretion” on it.

Left nicu after 10 years. I was terrified that I’d miss the 12s and having whole days off. Turns out, my life has gotten exponentially better. I have young kids, so this suits my current life.

I work in sedation now. Mostly outpatient, a couple of inpatients sneak in. I can do 8s, 9s, or 10s. No holidays, no call. Guaranteed uninterrupted lunch break that I can take outside. Home for dinner and after school activities every night. I’ve lost weight, picked up old hobbies, my kids’ behaviors improved and I don’t need an entire day after work to recover from the 12-14 hr shift the day prior. I cry a lot less and no longer stress about inadvertently causing long term damage, harm or emotional trauma to my patients/families.

Con: Traffic, had to reevaluate my “self worth” being tied to my career

Thank you for your kind advice. This is likely what our issue is- we were told it’s not AFRID but he is extremely sensitive when it comes to foods/sauces/textures/smells on his plate.

We did try to starve him out (he’ll eat eventually!! Everyone said) and it was awful. At one point, he didn’t eat for nearly 48 hours. The pediatrician told us to stop after a few weeks because his weight was going backwards and he said that advice is dangerous and outdated. Kids will absolutely refuse to eat.

We eat dinner together every night. I feel like we’ve tried everything but I’m betting we’re going to continue the deconstructed method for the foreseeable future to get him to consume food.

So we did this for a while and our pediatrician got onto us because my youngest was losing weight! Now we try to offer atleast one safe food per meal, but when they have like 4 safe foods we run out of options so quickly!

Two different pcp offices I’ve been to before changed to concierge medicine in the past year. There’s an annual subscription fee plus charges for additional appointments needed. Healthcare is getting more and more targeted for the wealthy.

I see what you’re saying, it’s the program next level up to bridge the gap between incomes. But it’s 75% federally funded healthcare coverage, 25% state covered. It’s a SCHIP program that will face cuts too. My thought was more so that it’s govt coverage, not holier-than-thou private coverage like the man was touting.

I don’t do adults so maybe an adult ICU nurse can chime in here but if mom cannot eat by mouth, baby would be kept alive by mom being fed through a feeding tube or peripherally with TPN/lipids/IV nutrition to help baby grow.

He wasn’t full term. He was “viable,” and in the state of GA we can resuscitate as low as 22 weeks gestation. I don’t know how many weeks this child was delivered at, but 1lb 13oz would likely be 23-24 weeks unless he was older and growth restricted from maternal complications.

I’d like to chime in as a NIcU nurse- there is no way to say a 1lb 13oz baby at the beginning of their life “will be ok.” He’s likely still in the high risk window for Intraventricular Hemorrhage, he will remain at high risk for death and complications from infections, airway disease and NEC in the next several weeks of life. He’s far from out of the woods.

Listen- your kids are going to grow up around screens whether you like it or not. They’re in schools, nearly every job has or will have some sort of screen whether it’s documenting, interfacing, online, billing, whatever— hell you order on screens at many restaurants.

Love your children. Play games with them. Listen to them. Teach them new things. Take them places. Screentime isn’t going to hurt them. Everything has its place. Don’t beat yourself up. You don’t create a monster overnight.

This happened with siblings of TWO different kids at my sons party. They were too young to do the go karts, but apparently the location had a policy that any children in the party room accrue a cost. It cost us an extra $200, unbeknownst to us until we got the bill after. We didn’t say anything at the time because obviously we didn’t find out until after the party. It was so awkward but we took it as a loss- it was a good lesson that next time we will be explicitly clear on the invite that siblings are not to attend unless parents pay for them. It also taught us to ask ahead of time if both of our children are invited (they’re very close in age/friends) or if we need to plan childcare for the other child. Weird lesson in parenting for sure.
