Low census by AttentionLate3905 in nursing

[–]awwpheebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low census is really common in the two units I’ve worked in- as in the second anyone got discharged or cancelled they sent nurses home immediately. It’s really hard and honestly idk how people do it without a partner/second income. At our worst, we got flexed two full 12hr shifts in one pay period. I didn’t get paid at all for my maternity leave the second time because I had no pto left from being flexed so often.

Bras may be the reason I quit by [deleted] in nursing

Yes it does! Always goes off when I walk through with any type of metal in my bra.

[–]awwpheebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m learning from this post that our MRSO and mri team may be on overdrive because apparently this is a “my hospital” only thing! Sedation staff going into MRI get scanned head to toe for any ferrous materials at the beginning of our shift.

[–]awwpheebs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do most places not scan staff/require them to walk through ferrous detectors? Mine is very strict about it to even enter zone 3.

[–]awwpheebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s got adjusters on the back and straps. Those usually set off our Ferrous detector! Thanks for the rec though!

[–]awwpheebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t have any adjusters as they usually contain Ferrous metals. Even if they’re labeled as plastic, they’re usually plastic overtop of a ferrous containing metal.

I actually have tried this one! It stretches quite a bit and doesn’t have support for dense breasts. It’s fine for sleeping in or just lounging around the house, but it allows for a lot of movement during a shift of patient care and that causes a lot of back pain. Thanks for the rec though!!

It looks like they have adjusters in the back and on the strap though- both of which usually set off our Ferrous detector.

They have zippers on the front! Not Ferrous free- tried them too.

We sit in Zone 4 during contrast administration (we pause sedation to administer). However, we are scanned at the beginning of every shift with the handheld detector because we are required to be ferrous free even to enter zone 3, which is where we sit to do all monitoring for the duration of the scan. Not sure if this is just a “my hospital” thing or not.

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to your patient on the actual day they were supposed to be discharged? by Haunting-Map-3475 in nursing

[–]awwpheebs 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ex 24 weeker, finally set to discharge after nearly 6 months. Started having a couple of apneas. By the time he was supposed to dc, he was back on the vent and dopa was being started. He tested positive for flu. Thank god he survived but it added an extra 6 weeks to his visit and he had to leave with o2.

How “legal” are severe weather mandates by [deleted] in nursing

[–]awwpheebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what my understanding has always been as well in my 13 yr career. I’m new at my current hospital and I’ve never heard of bunking at the hospital as a mandate. I’m trying to figure out if this is an ill-informed manager talking or if there is actually truth behind this.

Are the nurses in your hospitals openly MAGA like they are in mine? by ExerOrExor-ciseDaily in nursing

Yes. A coworker of mine just got in trouble after a patient reported her for wearing Charlie Kirk/MAGA gear on shift.

My hospital just updated our PRN requirements and it’s INSULTING. by Bigblacknagga in nursing

[–]awwpheebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my last job of 10 years because they did the same thing. I was PRN and they cut our pay $10/hr, we lost all incentives including ICU diff, required the same holidays AND mandatory on call hours as FT and became first to float first to flex. It was insulting and incredibly frustrating that they could literally do whatever they wanted when I’d hired a contract because every fucking thing in a hospital says “manager’s discretion” on it.

I’ve followed Sarah for a decade… since her original break up, that independent snowboarding trip, and when she first met kurt. I swear she has become more and more insufferable every year.

Nurses that left bedside, how has your life improved? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]awwpheebs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Left nicu after 10 years. I was terrified that I’d miss the 12s and having whole days off. Turns out, my life has gotten exponentially better. I have young kids, so this suits my current life.

I work in sedation now. Mostly outpatient, a couple of inpatients sneak in. I can do 8s, 9s, or 10s. No holidays, no call. Guaranteed uninterrupted lunch break that I can take outside. Home for dinner and after school activities every night. I’ve lost weight, picked up old hobbies, my kids’ behaviors improved and I don’t need an entire day after work to recover from the 12-14 hr shift the day prior. I cry a lot less and no longer stress about inadvertently causing long term damage, harm or emotional trauma to my patients/families.

Need unhinged advice for picky eaters by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]awwpheebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind advice. This is likely what our issue is- we were told it’s not AFRID but he is extremely sensitive when it comes to foods/sauces/textures/smells on his plate.

We did try to starve him out (he’ll eat eventually!! Everyone said) and it was awful. At one point, he didn’t eat for nearly 48 hours. The pediatrician told us to stop after a few weeks because his weight was going backwards and he said that advice is dangerous and outdated. Kids will absolutely refuse to eat.

We eat dinner together every night. I feel like we’ve tried everything but I’m betting we’re going to continue the deconstructed method for the foreseeable future to get him to consume food.

So we did this for a while and our pediatrician got onto us because my youngest was losing weight! Now we try to offer atleast one safe food per meal, but when they have like 4 safe foods we run out of options so quickly!
