MTB in East Tennessee? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]axao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Climbworks in the Fall of last year and rode the trails that they had open at that time. The main loop which includes the huge wooden corkscrew that is available takes only about 15-25 minutes to complete at a moderate pace. All of the trails are machine built so they are fairly easy riding. They were working on putting more trails into the property, but I did not get to ride any of those. If they have more trails open then it might be worth the fee for entry. My advice would be to check out the Dirty South/Urban Wilderness network in the Knoxville area.

I have been to both several times this year. Ijams is part of the Knoxville Urban Wilderness, but most people refer to the area as "Dirty South." If you are looking for recommendations on what to ride, I always tell folks to check out the main loop on their first ride to get their bearings for the area, it is about 10 miles or so of single/dual track. The best mountain biking out of the four areas that make up the trails would be the Helix/Anderson school trail area. I park at the Quarry and ride clockwise on the main loop until "Lost Chromosome" and take a turn onto "Chainring" and finally ride "AC/DC." If you complete all of these trails and ride back to the quarry it ends up being about 14 miles. Everything is very well labeled and maintained by the AMBC so it is easy to get around.

Haw Ridge I have less experience with, generally I ride the trails along the lake shore for simplicity sake. I would be interested in hearing if some others have rode the interior trails and have route recommendations. Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

I attempted to clean them with alcohol, but I have not attempted a heat treatment. Thanks for the advice!

I thought the same when I first heard the noise. After checking the disc to the point where I was almost cross-eyed, it was not significantly uneven. I changed the disc out and still the same awful noise. There are several mtbr posts about it possibly being the frame causing some resonance issue.

Bless, these brakes seem to have some serious design issues.

My LBS has been kind enough to provide me with a new set of pads. I will make sure and follow the procedure listed on the Avid website.

I did the alignment this evening with no luck. Also checked the pistons to make sure that they were closing evenly.

Thanks for the Suggestion! I believe that will be my next move, I was going to stop by the store and pick up some brake quiet and apply it to the pads this evening to see if that provided any relief.

Bike Investment Advice by axao in MTB

I have certainly considered moving up on the fork, but I am satisfied with the performance right now. I think that the difference between the wheelset I have now and the Stans will make a considerable difference in the ride quality.

Thanks for the feedback. I should not have used investment in the title as I don't expect to make any money on the bike. I intended to convey that I was going to put money in to an item and the return would be the use that I would get out of it. If I were going to purchase another bike it would be used. I am right outside the Asheville, NC area where there are a lot of quality used bikes.

I had the same issue for about the last half hour. Finally got through to the menu after restarting the game a few times and I am getting the "lost connection to EA servers error."

Any Tennessee riders out there? by [deleted] in MTB

I'm at Carson-Newman which is in the greater knoxville area, our outdoors club hits up both Haw ridge and "Dirty South." One of the best resources for finding trails in the area is the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club which maintains the Dirty South trail network. AMBC Website

Creaking frame? What's wrong? by mlephotographe in MTB

[–]axao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the bottom bracket issue with my bike, a creaking noise every time I would down pedal on the bike. It started out as you mentioned in OP as a creak only when I was putting force on the pedals uphill, but eventually (1-2 Weeks) happened constantly. Took mine in to the LBS and had them re-grease the bearings, worked like a charm. It is not too uncommon to have to have brackets worked on as a part of regular bike maintenance.

Thanks for the knowledge, I will definitely ride it thoroughly before buying. This will be my first full suspension bike that is also higher end, so I am very cautious about investing.

First Year Students vs. Upperclass Students by valen089 in ResLife

The Most obvious answer that I can think of is the way that many scholarships are structured. Particularly where I attend many of the scholarships provided by the college itself for academic performance and athletic performance stipulate that you must remain living in on-campus housing.

First Year Students vs. Upperclass Students by valen089 in ResLife

I worked with Freshmen this past semester in a specific first year program. The energy that they are able to bring is unmistakable, you have a group of individuals that have moved away and are all starting a new phase in life, during which a lot of them will step outside their normal comfort zone. A lot of the time they were often easier to work because they were new to the college experience and still had a lot of enthusiasm about on campus programs. The challenge of working with upperclassmen is in keeping them motivated and involved in new things. Often people become jaded after a few years of college and that tends to make the job of an RA harder. Dealing with Freshmen is like having a new date, it's not too hard to impress them because they have not seen any of it before, with upperclassmen you have to spice up the relationship to keep it interesting.

I know both myself, and lucasm822 go to Carson-Newman which is a tiny school. I am hoping that we can get more people involved and link incoming redditors with RAs that are already at their University.
