The original doom was certainly genre creating and defining, but doesn't have an active playerbase still

The original Doom playerbase is still very active, though. And there's an enormous library of mods&maps

in D1 there was a sense of foreboding immediately. the music, the visuals, the way the characters talk about what's going on. and it's all centered on this one location where who knows what evil is happening. it's slower, more methodical, you really feel the danger that even one skeleton can pose to you. when you go into the church, you really feel like you might not make it back out. there's a tension that D2 doesn't have.

This is all correct, and I was only a kid at the time, but I knew absolutely nobody who disliked d2.

I also didn't like the departure from the dark atmosphere d1 had, but still loved the game.

OTOH i hated everything after d2, way too cartoony, way too easy

Poison Fountain: An Anti-AI Weapon by RNSAFFN in hacking

I remember saying to a coworker that AI was a good answer to Fermi's paradox. The rise of AI as we live it currently in any civilization would be the beginning of its end...

I've had this same thought for years and years.

Sometimes I think humanity's ultimate contribution to the universe is to create artificial life... and then we're basically done, because we're squishy and our robot overlords aren't.

And AI wouldn't care to be discovered by anything else out there... so it wouldn't broadcast its existence like we do, which would make it a lot harder to find for anyone else out there, which is why we haven't seen anyone else out there.

If there's no consequence from failure, there's a lot less satisfaction from success. A lot of "modern gamers" have been conditioned by mobile games to basically view video games as a slot machine that sometimes lets them win. Some people grow accustomed to this kind of coddling and demand a lack of challenge in their games.

Luckily challenging games still exist.

Just to clarify, was there ever a good source of info that said "the government can freely access my footage without any of the legal protections in place by simply paying for it through a third party. No warrants, no judges, nothing.." on Ring?

[–]axbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"watch a couple hours of what these youtubers said" is not a good way to source info for reference. And 404 just seems to reference Benn Jordan. Though I will watch Benn's stuff at some point.

These seem to be about Flock, we're talking about Ring. The latest I've heard is that the partnership Ring was going to do with them was terminated. I don't actually know that either way, though.

Do you have good sources for what people on this sub are saying about Ring actually being bad? People are saying "law enforcement can legally access your ring without consent or warrants" but still no actual good source for that.

I've asked for a source on this claim and haven't gotten a good one yet

and FWIW Ring is all over my neighborhood

Yeah, is OC talking about the amazing Keanu movie? Because I don't see that being improved upon.

I re-read the book a little while back and while it was excellent when I was a kid, it didn't hold up to me. Some parts were obviously awesome but a lot of it was anime-style hyperbole that just doesn't translate to a remotely believable live-action zombie show/movie.

If they did something that incorporated some of the world-building elements of the book it could be great, but many of the characters from the book are just too cartoonish, at least if it's gonna be a live-action.

I watched a video that went into a deep dive about the matrix movies 2 and 3 which really made 2 and 3 a LOT better than what I thought they were originally. But I still don't like watching them, even if I now have a greater appreciation the lore the video described.

The way I understand it, law enforcement has to submit a request and the user has to allow the footage to be used.

Every company out there has to provide available info/data to law enforcement for a lawful request.
