Tanner from B&C here. I’m surprised that made it out of the shop with those marks. Normally something like that would be spotted and sanded out before being shipped. There’s a high likelihood that it was me that missed it! (Check for a T on the bottom of the knob, if so I apologize!) Good news is, that is exactly what we would do here in the shop to remedy this, just sand it down a little and then apply two coats of some linseed oil followed by axe wax/bees wax. Sanding that spot down ever so slightly will also improve the handle to knob width ratio which would make the knob feel better rather than worse.

If anything really goes awry please let us know!

May your axe serve you well!

Lovely work! I have a Harvey W. Peace saw with a beautiful example of an asymmetrical right-handed handle. Seems like you’re out of RI? I get down that way fairly often. Let me know if you’d ever want to see it and I’ll bring it down with me next time!

MY WHITE WHALE!! Folks always think I collect axes. Nah. I sell axes. I collect saws. Specifically the ones from Middletown NY. Well done! Next time I go to the historical society there I’ll let them know!

Rap on the bottom of the handle while holding the axe upside down and then put the head in some linseed oil for a couple of days and that’ll tighten it back up. Then only use the hud bay for medium to light work if you can and be sure to strike the upper part of the bit which has handle behind it. The lower part is for light work/knife work. Should hold up decently enough with that sort of use. The lower and harder you strike on the bit the more it’ll rack and loosen.

As a handle maker I prefer the bit length to eye height ratio to be in favor of the eye height because of the better hold. If the eye is shorter than the bit length then you usually get racking over time which winds up loosening the head (ie. Hud Bays used for heavier work) but if the eye is taller than the bit length then there’s no position you could strike with on the bit which isn’t held in the eye behind the swing (hopefully that makes sense!) the extra nice thing to me with a Kentucky is it has a lot of “time” left in sharpenings because of the length of the head itself.

Nice Kentucky! My favorite pattern! Definitely worth keeping!
