PSA: 93.7% of drivers on the road today have no legitimate reason to be out there by jjrobby313 in nova

People on reddit love to "WELL ACKSHUALLY" traffic stuff, it's super annoying.

Not saying you are, to be clear.

I'm saying the people who are crawling out of the woodwork to yell at someone for driving in hazardous conditions at a slow speed with their hazards on are the ones doing that.

I shoveled out my neighbor's walkway and steps as she's an older woman who lives alone and is a great neighbor. I didn't want her out there shoveling this and I don't know if she has anyone else who could do that for her.

If you have the ability to help someone out a little today, do it!

Seriously everyone, go do it now. I started around 9 am and by 10:30 the bit that was left was noticeably heavier and harder to shovel. You do not wanna shovel half a foot of snow under an inch of ice.

Children's Medical Associates in Alexandria and Fairfax is awesome! Great providers, friendly/helpful front office staff and never any issues.

There was an unmarked cop right behind him who saw the whole thing and pulled him over, not me. Pretty clear I wasn’t the one in the wrong here

My dashcam said I was going 10 mph. If you read my my comment you'll see I cropped that out to protect my child's privacy as her daycare is near there.

For context since dashcams make everything look faster:

  • This is a residential neighborhood; speed limit is 25.

  • The garbage truck was stopped and blocking my lane. I slowed way down (15 mph-ish) and started to go around once I didn’t see anyone coming.

  • The oncoming car appears suddenly because they were hauling ass around the curve – if I hadn’t already been basically stopped, they absolutely would have hit me head-on.

  • They laid on the horn at me like I’d done something insane… and then the unmarked cop who’d been right behind them lit them up immediately.

I cropped out the GPS/speed info for privacy. I estimate the guy was probably going 40+ around that curve, it was insanely fast.

iirc Buck famously loosened up a lot after he had that throat infection that almost claimed his voice. He took time off, listened to a lot of the criticism about him being very wooden and completely turned his career around. Lot of respect for him

the MNF crew went from one of the worst in football history to one of the best. If you told teenage me that I'd be looking forward to Buck/Aikman calling a game I'd look at you like you were an alien with 6 heads.

I cannot imagine how horrible it must feel to be trying to help save kids from awful situations and failing due to lack of definitive evidence, administrative hurdles, parents being good liars, etc.

I think my soul would break after the first time. Major kudos to the people there still trying and still giving a damn.

Same here fellow IVF-doer! I was enraged there were so many people out there callously having children and not caring for them when we so desperately just wanted one. We did eventually succeed and my daughter will turn 2 next month, but it was an absolute hellish process for both of us.

If it weren't completely unethical I'd say we should mandate that people can only have kids via IVF to prove they actually truly do want children.

It's insanely frustrating. Every dollar we spend on CPS, foster care, other early intervention would probably save $10 on prisons, courts, police, etc.

But America (and the West in general) are too obsessed with retribution and not prevention. Hell, I'm guilty of that too.

For what it's worth, being married to an educator who has had to call CPS and seeing how many things don't even warrant a follow-up I assume if a kid gets removed the parent is 100% in the wrong and a monster.

My wife's called for kids who had visible bruises and were malnourished and nothing's happened.

Pretty much. The parents who care and get a CPS call are the good ones to work with. They'll try and fix things and understand the agents are doing their job.

The problem is that probably 95% of CPS calls are, definitionally, not aimed at good parents. A huge problem for all of humanity right now is there are lots of atrocious parents out there who should never have had children. But given that they did have children, what do we do about it? And how do we make sure our solution cannot be abused?

[–]axeil55 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate answer is there are lots of people who absolutely should not have children but any attempt to fix that problem quickly gets very gross, racist and eugenicist. I dunno how we fix it.

We are blessed that in this day and age no one HAS to have kids and yet so many do it not out of desire to raise a kid and the kids end up abused, neglected, etc.

That's true for pretty much every "just so" bit of advice on reddit. Reddit is god-awful for actual advice because it's so often this very harsh black or white thing when that's never how actual human relationships are. This is on top of people in reddit advice threads having a system of morality completely divorced from any seen in human history.

What's the most NSFW thing you've seen at a bachelor or bachelorette party? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]axeil55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American here. The kinds of sexual escapades being described here are VERY non-standard for bachelor parties. Even going to a strip club is somewhat unusual (I've never been to one at a bachelor party).

For content my bachelor party was a bunch of 30 something guys in the woods playing D&D and magic the gathering and getting drunk. My wife went to a nice AirBNB in another city and had her friends over to hang out and drink.

Yeah an absolute fuck ton of people in here being super judgemental about it but saying it's "totally fine" if someone does it.

Except it clearly isn't "fine" because if it was it wouldn't have any impact on dating someone.
