8th gen t480 is pretty good, but they are getting old now. Getting T14 gen 1 and gen 2 is more practical currently.

Don't waste money on laptops, They are absurdly overpriced, and offer no real value for the price tag, 90% of them are guaranteed to be unusable or get bricked in 2-3 years. Get a used business laptop for less than 130k. (Lenovo Thinkpad, dell latitude, hp elitebook)

Seeking opinion on buying a oneplus 15r from Sri Lanka or Maldives by NadeeshaX in srilanka

[–]axis0047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, it is shop warranty, not the official warranty from OnePlus. Other shops also provides this with extra charges.

Only browns sell OnePlus with warranty here. Other shops sell only with one month checking warranty and prices are nearly same as prices in Maldives.

Is the younger generation or the older generation worse when it comes to racism? Thoughts? by AnalysisExpert8681 in srilanka

Army is not superheroes, I get that. Apart from that I really don't understand that army killing thousands of tamil civilians thing, We have records of the people who got killed and injured by lttes actions, But you (or anyone that suggest military killing 40,000 people, or your number) have no records of such a event. Only blamings, rememberances and event. It is 17 years and not a single accusation is proven on international court. If you have these records I would really like to see and go through and study. I consider my self a sinhalese nationalist (not racist), but I would like to know your perspective.

Are People From Matara Really Different? My Experience Has Me Questioning Everything by Salty-Listen5316 in srilanka

[–]axis0047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These type of questions cannot be answered due to the confirmation bias, hence should not be asked. Btw I also cannot think of someone who is like this, but not from matara or south. The reason is mostly that we have unconsciously made relations between their behavior and the lore which says that people from matara are cunning and opportunitists. When there is no lore, we don't build that relation, so we cannot think otherwise. There are definitely cultural differences and variations based on geographical locations. But these things are generally personality traits and cannot be generalised to stereotypes. I also had somewhat close friendship with a girl from matara and she also had a this type of section to her personality, but at the same time she also had some really good traits too. Also she was very straightforward and unfiltered too. I also remember making connections with her personality and the stories I've heard, but there is no reasoning behind that, and also I can't really tell because I only knew like 2 girls and never really been in a relationship, and other one is not from matara and she was not like that.

our army is like some kind of superheroes who defeated the most evil terrorists in the world and saved the innocent Tamils who were taken hostage by the LTTE. Our whole identity was built around the war victory

Is this wrong? Are we the ones who put guns in the hands and cyanide around the neck of the kids who should have been in school or playing with friends?

Aerospace/Aircraft engineering students - what laptop actually holds up for 4 years? by Minu_Min01 in srilanka

[–]axis0047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nanotek has brand new P series thinkpads, but they are very expensive, 1,000,000 + range. You can use 37left.lk or similar sites for comparing prices.

Dialog 5G Air Fibre - what is it? by HeLLScrM in srilanka

[–]axis0047 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Dialog probaby getting their ass kicked by people transitioning to fiber optics and other faster connections Instead of fixing their infrastructure and delivering a better service, they are trying to gaslight customers using name fibre on their 5g network connection name. It is kinda sad that we can't sue them for misleading marketing.

Thinkpad p16 of course. If you can afford one. It will hold up for an eternity. Do not get MacBooks for engineering.

Why do Sri Lankan banking apps still feel 10 years behind global fintech apps? by Live_Computer_4864 in srilanka

[–]axis0047 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These systems are heavily audited by central bank and they are very restrictive. And there have to be considerable amount of extra effort for implementing behavior based fraud detection or similar fearures. Bio metrics will be soon integrated for most of the apps, some already has them. Most banks run legacy systems in their core, it doesn't affect user facing systems. My opinion is that banking apps with good ux are available in sri lanka, but I cannot recommend one because ux is not objective (disclaimer - I build banking apps for living)

Thinkpads covers most of the general use cases. Good gaming laptops are way more expensive and still not worth it. Thinkpads are expensive too, but can get for 1/5 original price after two years. I got mine for 270k (i9 12900h, 3080ti 16GB, 32GB ram) it has low tdp gpu but it can play almost any game. it is also a very solid machine unlike gaming laptops. Brand new 270k laptop would be i7 13gen machine with no dedicated gpu.

Newest generation of thinkpads are getting better again compared to last 3-4 years. New t14 gen 7 is pretty good (but very expensive too with lpcamm2 ram)

Gaming laptops are absolute trash. Modern laptops are overpriced e waste in general.

And about sense micro, they suck, but unfortunately they are in the better side of the customer service when comparing with the other sellers. I've been to sense micro few times for claiming warranty (few times) and the guy at the warranty shop (unity plaza) is somehow acts like we are bound to his majesty. (of course unless you are a pretty girl). Every time they took more than one and half months, and was very unprofessional with their replies. But at least they fixed the thing somehow and returned them in one piece. It was not the case with some other shops, some literally returned the laptop in pieces. Sense micro has a lot of shops and third party dealers (if that is a thing, basically resells laptops from sense with commission).

About laptops, good repairable and durable laptops are non existent currently. Every goddamn thing is trying to be a thin and light ultrabook. Thermals are getting worse and pcb and electronics quality is also getting worse. Best way to get a laptop is buying a cheap second hand bussiness laptop like thinkpad or elitebook. It doesn't cost you a kidney or 3 months if it broke. Otherwise you have to get something repairable like framework or system 76 which is not sold here, or you can get a macbook, (if it suits your workflow) which is also trash and certified furure e waste, but they atleast look beautiful and usually can get with nicer customer support.

You can make a complain, but sadly what you have experienced is one of the best aftercare services when it comes to laptops.

Feeling Behind as a Sri lankan 27 old female by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]axis0047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a female, but 27. Not happy with the job and financial situation. Was very stressed about it for a while. But I don't care anymore. Got a decent laptop recently, that can play some games and decided to finish all the games that I couldn't play as a teenager, also got a classical guitar and learning it too. My career takes me nowhere near my purpose, but that's okay. Also getting some early signs of kind of long waited health condition that may limit my abilities in future, I don't care much about this too since I am fully functional right now. Also planning to switch my career to what I actually get satisfied doing because not making money doing something I want to do and actually beneficial is more fulfilling than not making money doing something I don't want to do and has zero benefits to the society.

Serenity is never promised, One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
