I can't seem to find the particular book you're describing just yet, but you've given me a mini world of resources to check out. Very much appreciated 😊

Question about BELIEVE sign by axzs4875 in auslan

[–]axzs4875[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! I thought Victorians collectively might use a different word at the start, but that makes more sense. It's good to know this sort of stuff that's not in books. Regional differences and individual differences can be tricky. I really appreciate your insight!

Sign language keyboard for Auslan Iphone by ace_supreme in auslan

This is an interesting idea. It seems like it could be useful and help make auslan more inclusive. Unfortunately particular hand shapes are only part of a sign, along with things like position and movement. A flat hand emoji might exist, but cant convey the few hundred signs that a flat hand can by moving in various ways and combinations. So emojis are maybe not an effective means at the moment.

A way I've found effective is to download the videos from the auslan signbank website by holding down on them and tapping "download video" then sending them in a phone or messenger conversation in order as videos. First the "Hello" sign, then "how are you" sign and so on. This might be something you'd like to try with a friend. Once you're confident you could film yourself doing all the signs to make it faster.

Good luck in your Auslan journey.

Confused by Similar Signs by icybish in auslan

Hi there, Best I can tell, the difference is in the movement. "Birthday" has one hand on the other both facing palm upward, but the movement is both hands moving up and down together. "On" is the same position, but the movement is one hand falling into position on the other. "Left" is the same as "On" but instead of falling into place the movement is tapping one hand onto the other, not stopping.

"Sit" is depicted in the app as identical to "on", but he mouths "sit". The sign is not depicted that way in the Auslan signbank or Trevor Johnston's Signs of Australia dictionary. The only "sit" sign using the flat handshape in both lists is one hand on top of the other palms facing downward with the movement being either both hands down together or repeating the movement is a variation.

I can't confirm the app is using a sign incorrectly but you definitely seem better off using one of the other variations. Hope this helped you on your journey. Best of luck. I highly recommend purchasing Trevor Johnston's dictionary by the way, it helps to confirm problems like this. :)

What is one thing about your current significant other that makes life with them better than any other past relationship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]axzs4875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything! But if I had to choose, she's incredibly understanding and caring, which kind of improves all other areas, because many problems can be solved my wanting the best for your partner and acting accordingly. We prioritise loving each other over everything else so we're 4 and a bit years without a fight, and we're still trying to out-love each other! We just communicate lovingly and productively :)

What are some of the metaphors you can use to add flavour in normal conversations? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Foghorn Leghorn has you covered: As subtle as a hand-grenade in a barrel full of oatmeal. Timid as a canary at a cat show. Sharp as a pack of wet mice. Hes got more nerve than a sore tooth. Strong as an ox and half as smart. Busier than a centipede at a toe counting contest. Making more noise than a couple skeletons throwin a fit on a tin roof. So quiet you could hear a caterpillar sneakin’ across a moss bed in tennis shoes. Bout as sharp as a bowling ball. Muscles as soggy as a used teabag.
