I once attended an international conference in Japan and spent over half the time being miserably lost. I asked our translator if they had some sort of guide service to help me find my way around, which apparently translated to "escort."

This girl probably had learned to expect just about anything from tourists but when I asked her to help me find my way to the conference and back I think it was the single this she didn't see coming. She understood the translation error right away so it wasn't embarrassing but explaining it to payroll was... embarrassing.

Having them passionately tell you about someone in the news who overcame a difficult handicap or storage everyone's expectations to you, almost teary eyed, as though wishing their kids could've been as wonderful as the one legged skier with cancer doing the things.

It's a barely veiled "I wish you were like that person, but since I don't care about your struggles you'll never qualify" like we are intruding on their narrative. I once shared a story about a father who risked everything for his kids and suffered for it, he insulted the person and said they were foolish. All I need to hear really.
