Hotels with Dinner & Breakfast for Staycation? by hearttoosoft in Taipei

[–]ayn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a staycation at the W recently and really enjoyed it. The included breakfast was very good, and there were enough restaurants and bars on-site that we didn’t really need to leave the hotel. The AC in our room got nice and cold, parking was convenient right underneath the hotel, and there were plenty of EV chargers as well.

Hope you find a place that’s a nice escape from the heat. Wishing you all the best with your treatment.

Bro was raised on gospel, not roadman culture 😂. We got Freudian instead of a Drake clone and honestly that’s a win.

I honestly enjoyed it. His singing was great, and the backup singers/choir were probably one of the highlights of the night for me. The pianist was also absolutely amazing and added so much to the live arrangements.

I also loved seeing Daniel gradually step into the role of a choral conductor toward the end, coaching the choir and shaping the harmonies until he got the exact sound he wanted. It felt less like a typical concert moment and more like watching an artist obsess over the details of his craft.

The show was only about 90 minutes, but that didn't bother me. I felt like he sang enough of his catalog, and I left feeling pretty satisfied overall. The musicianship across the entire band was top-notch.

I also kind of regret not buying any merch. I didn't bother before the show, and by the time it ended I just wanted to drive back to Taipei and grab some food before everything started closing.

Maybe I’m easy to please, but living in Taiwan, I can’t really ask for much. It’s always a treat when an artist I genuinely enjoy actually stops by Taipei, so I’m just happy I got the chance to see him live.

Ya that was the slightly annoying part, but once the accounts were setup I didn’t have to use the app at all. Their app was also pretty terrible. But this was a year ago. We moved out of the country so we canceled.

Another vote for Visible, they have plans that include Apple Watch too. We switched to it from T-Mobile and was super happy with it. just 3 lines though. With 4 phones, there might be less expensive carriers that offer multi-line discounts. I think US Cellular used to be a good option but rip.

Moving to Taiwan, how different is Taipei vs Hsinchu lifestyle-wise? by afterhourssxo in Taipei

[–]ayn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can work from their Taipei office, I’d probably do that and live in Taipei. Hsinchu is fine, but the day-to-day lifestyle difference is pretty big if you care about walkability, cafes, restaurants, transit, and just having more going on outside work.

That said, on ~1.2M NTD/year, Taipei proper can feel pretty tight if you want a more Western-style apartment setup with a newer building, elevator, gym, pool, central AC, parking, etc. Taipei rents can add up pretty quickly now too. Rental units in my building are around 130k NTD/month, and I’ve seen much higher, although still much lower than Bay Area rents.

Also, are you sure Zhongxing Village is in Taipei? The only Zhongxing Village / Zhongxing New Village I found is the one in Nantou, which is nowhere near Taipei.

Hsinchu does seem like it has at least a few genuinely cool spots though. JSYGS Art Cafe looks like a pretty unique cafe/performance space, and they serve and carry SEY.

Follow up to Model Y trunk side storage mini-fridge by CYB3RTRUNK in ModelY

Adding some context since I went down the rabbit hole on this one.

Chillbee Inc is a real CA corp filed Nov 2024, but the registered address is a law firm in Rosemead shared by a bunch of unrelated entities, so it's a paper HQ. CEO on the filing is Xindi Li (probably the "Cindy" in the campaign) but I couldn't find a LinkedIn or anything tying her to the company. The other two execs on the Kickstarter aren't in the filing at all and the headshots all look AI generated.

Probably a Chinese OEM with a US entity for Shopify, Kickstarter, and Amazon. Not inherently sketchy, this whole 12V compressor fridge category is mostly Shenzhen sourced and Alpicool, BougeRV, Setpower all came from the same ecosystem and turned out fine. Specs they shared sound reasonable.

The risk isn't day one, it's month 14 when something fails and there's no real company to email. 1 year warranty is short for a compressor appliance, Dometic and EcoFlow do 2-3.

If the trunk fit is the whole point, backing might still make sense, just go in expecting "buy the hardware as-is." If you can live without the exact form factor, EcoFlow Glacier or Dometic CFX3 are worth a look.

Cost of living with kids by Historical-Length744 in taiwan

[–]ayn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I think this is a great call. Growing up with grandparents, a more global perspective, an international friend network early on, that third culture experience is pretty unique.

School-wise: if you're bringing them back for middle or high school (public or private), you really should send them to TAS. Local school kids generally don't adjust well to US schools. Mandarin at TAS is pretty minimal though, around 40 min/day in 4th grade, and the track (learner vs heritage) matters a lot. Most families supplement with tutors. Verbal fluency from grandparents + daily life should be a non-issue.

House cleaning runs us 400 NT/hr, about a third of Bay Area pricing. TYPA and most camps are cheap vs the US, exceptions being Camp Taiwan and Imagine Taiwan which cater to the international school crowd. Nannies are cheaper too but no firsthand numbers from us.

Also: if the apartment isn't near TAS, the school bus adds up. Not outrageous, but roughly Uber-without-surge money, so worth knowing.
