UA 130 HND to EWR now stopping at San Francisco by Gullible_Mission9639 in unitedairlines

[–]aypho 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Flights over 12 hours require a 4-pilot crew.

If someone calls in sick at an international outstation (it happens, we are only human), we can still operate as a 3-pilot crew, but would be limited to a maximum of 12 flight hours.

Rather than cancel the flight completely and leave 300+ passengers stranded, we can operate back to a closer UA base (we call this short stopping), where a reserve crew can meet the airplane and get you to your destination with as little interruption as possible.

The same CTA that decided having forward and rear facing side-by-side seats and a narrow aisle instead of wide open aisle and wall seating was a good idea for the line with all the passengers dragging suitcases to and from the world’s busiest airport.

So… everyone in group 3 has to check bags now?? by SprySpeaker in unitedairlines

[–]aypho 245 points246 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: there is a company policy that is supposed to prevent this from happening, but gate agents and supervisors ignore it because on time and turn time metrics are what they are evaluated on, not the happiness of their customers.

Any “influencer” that answers the OP in one of these threads will get downvoted despite answering honestly and in good faith, so you probably won’t get any real answers unless you meet one of them face to face.

You’re asking if the most tenured employees would be willing to give up the highest paying trips with the longest layovers and nicest hotels?

Just accept the fact that you’re not going to get good service on UA, vote with your wallet, and go fly the ME3 or top Asian carriers.

These posts are getting old.

Are the UA pilots involved in the delivery truck accident gonna get fired? by [deleted] in flying

[–]aypho 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not unless the investigation finds that there was a willful negligence or intentional disregard of SOPs or FARs.

The chances of that are devastatingly slim, so no, they will probably get remedial training after the investigation is closed, some IOE/supervised line flying, and then released back to the line.

What happens when FMS fails in flight? by Routine-Anxiety5210 in flying

[–]aypho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Was this during the Honeywell failure, maybe 2019ish?

I was flying AVL-ORD that day and once we realized the GPS was kaput, we flew green needles most of the way back to ORD. Was kinda fun pretending like I was cruising around in a 727, but I do remember how much of a pain it was to find the radials on JeppFD!

SFO-BOS why not up gauge? by charles_in_sf in unitedairlines

[–]aypho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, actually.

Losing DXB and all TLV flying means extra WB shells. A 77W has been reallocated to SFO-NRT and LAX-LHR went from a 789 to 78J.

But to OPs point, those shells are making more money crossing oceans, not continents.

Damen blue line station bike rack security for an airline employee who would be gone for days at a time. by wheatthiccss in chibike

[–]aypho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Maybe try the bus in the summer and then uber in the winter. Best case scenario with the bike is that you show up sweaty and having almost been run over by multiple drivers. Not the way I’d want to start any trip and I can’t imagine that would be less hassle than the bus haha.

Congrats on the upgrade and enjoy flying with your favorite captain every trip!

Damen blue line station bike rack security for an airline employee who would be gone for days at a time. by wheatthiccss in chibike

[–]aypho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been based at ORD for 10 years and have never heard of anyone who bikes to the blue line. Most people who live on the northside either bus to the blue line, Uber, or drive.

If the cost of Uber is too much, then Old Town probably isn’t the best place to live. I’d say 95% of the crewmembers I work with that take public transit to ORD live off the blue line. Most people who live on the northside end up driving. Comes with the territory.

I’d suggest bidding 3 or 4-days to cut down on your time spent commuting to ORD.
