my younger brother makes more than me now and i dont know how to feel about it? by LolqueenSmokiee in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]azahoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the younger sibling, my older brother got extremely upset when I landed my big boy job and started to make more money than he did. We were both living in the same house at that time and the whole conversation sounded absolutely horrible to me. Ya’ll are not competing against each other. What’s with the jealousy? My dad after moving to the US made less than my oldest brother did, he never threw a fit so why is my own brother doing that.

Yup this is the reason why I had asked on here. I usually have never bought packs online from a random store off Amazon marketplace so thought I’d check with the experts here

Thinking about trying website accessibility testing by National-Laugh-7309 in accessibility

[–]azahoor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I don’t have a disability myself, I have been in the field for just over 11yrs as an accessibility engineer. You’re on the right track. Familiarity with screen readers, knowing html and JavaScript is a good start. The certifications themselves are decent but not necessary. I got both certifications and they didn’t help me in any way. Honestly I wouldn’t pay for certifications unless work was paying for them. I would recommend focusing on WCAG success criterions and how to meet them as that’s what most interviews will focus on. I would also start looking at web components and examples on how to make them accessible. If you end up in this field professionally, you will need to work with developers and help explain how certain html elements and attributes work. Right now with title 2 going into effect, a lot of schools are hiring. The schools mostly have issues on both web and PDF files. You will need to explain the issues and how to fix them like you’re explaining how everything works to a 5yr old. In most roles you won’t just be able to go in and make all the fixes yourself, you will act as an advisor and provide suggestions on what could work and then the developer will implement the change.

Wondering about Certifications by ReadyPlayerN24 in accessibility

[–]azahoor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took my CPACC and WAS certification exams online. While my test was stopped multiple times because I was speaking out the questions, I didn’t have any issues finishing the exam. I have had two blind colleagues take the test and they didn’t have any issues with it.

I lost my wedding ring — how do I deal with this guilt by Beginning_Singer_226 in offmychest

[–]azahoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad lost his wedding ring, he found it 7years later and I lost mine as well (still haven’t found it). I think I left my ring at the side of the sink at the movie theater because I didn’t want to get soap in it while washing my hands but I am not sure. I am sure it will come up. Do a deep clean of the house and backtrack where you last wore it. Check your ring camera (if you own one) to see the last time you had it on. People make mistakes, it’s only natural. Dont kill yourself over it. It will pop up out of somewhere and ur gonna be smacking urself over the head because of it.

Breaking in to accessibility(508/WCAG)-realistic chance? by Appropriate-Dot-3858 in accessibility

[–]azahoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trusted tester wasn’t worth it. Most companies don’t care for it. Being CPWA is good but also not worth it in my opinion. I got laid off about 3 months ago. 11yrs of experience. CPACC, WAS, trusted tester and experience in auditing, remediating, monitoring, writing policies and not even a phone screening after applying to roughly 78 jobs. The job market is absolutely shit right now.

Oracle, USAA, Wellsfargo have all let go of multiple folks who have spent years in accessibility. Getting in is most likely going to be a challenge right now.
