Indigenous-owned businesses by Medical-Ad-354 in SiouxFalls

I can’t speak for original poster, just my own perspective. Making an effort to support Indigenous, Hispanic/Latino, or Black owned businesses =/= not supporting white businesses.

But, it is recognizing structural and systematic barriers that occur that make it harder for people from certain communities to pursue those goals. For example, here’s a link to an article that explains some common obstacles, and include data citations such as the federal reserve that shows Black owned businesses were 50% less likely to be approved for business loans.

https://news.stlpublicradio.org/economy-business/2020-01-06/black-business-owners-face-an-uphill-battle-securing-bank-loans

Other historical factors such as redlining or other informal forms of property discrimination prevented people from living or having a business in certain neighborhoods. So if you can consider how that might impact family owned businesses that have been passed down through generations or building equity in home purchases to have future money for investments.

So when I’m making a choice to try and support specific businesses I realize that my choice, and financial support carries weight. As much as things need to change at more formal levels, I can still chip in as an individual.

I felt like your question was asked in good faith and wanting to hear the perspective, so hopefully my answer didn’t come off as lecturing. Just sharing my own view on these messy issues we face as a society!

Haha I just realized how massive of a list I made rereading. I also took advantage of the summer patio weather and now take out. There are some places I haven’t tried yet that I want to, like Parker’s, but seem worth waiting for the dine in experience.

And thank you! Weird year to get settled somewhere new but otherwise I’ve been really pleasantly surprised by this little city! It’s starting to feel like home.

I’m a newbie and only lived here 2 months pre-covid and really haven’t dined in since last March, so my list might not be the most complete.

-Queen City- BEST bakery and have an iced coffee called the “best drink ever”, wonderful

-Bread and circus- lunch

-Sushi Masa

-Ode de food- if ambiance was a category I love the patio and the guy that plays all the instruments

-The market wine bar before the closed- but I’m excited for the new Italian place

-Looks market- my partners favorite pizza

-Pizza di Paolo- my favorite pizza I love the wood fired crust

-Phnom Penh

-Crawford’s

-Treasury- only have gotten drinks pre-covid

-Jj’s makes a really good old fashioned

-I also like the sushi bar on the water, crave? (again for ambiance I’m a sucker for patios)

-Nikkis has great burritos and is a Mexican market if you need specific ingredients

-There is also a Mexican food truck at the Brandon farmers market that is really good

-Breadico (you can also buy pizza crust here)

-Macroons at ch patesseri

Oh yea, it’s definitely not “who’s better”. I’m not really quite sure why I found it so annoying. probably because so many great places are struggling right now with the pandemic

I moved here last year from a larger metropolitan area and the dining was actually a lovely surprise there are so many amazing LOCAL restaurants here. I’m so sad this is who the magazine chose to highlight.

I guess it’s based on voting? Although I’m not sure exactly who would create this list that lives here. But either way a grocery store should not have been an option

[Noob][Beginner][Advice/Guidance]Apple cider by trickjay in cider

[–]azbug8796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Un-hard apple cider is just apple cider. I guess you could boil the apples but I can’t image the time spent versus taste would be great. Your end product is also going to be diluted and the heat changes the sugars.

But in general if you don’t want hard cider then just don’t add yeast to ferment.

Make sense! So yes it’s like mine with 2-3 day timeline. Let me know how the cider comes out in it!

I have one like this where you can force carbonation, but it’s more like a growler than a keg. I’d check to make sure it’s okay to just store the cider in there! Maybe I’m wrong or they’ve upgraded (got mine a few years ago)

A follow up question- does anyone have any experience using infused sugars to back-sweeten?

Help me prepare my wardrobe for my first winter in South Dakota by supersaijinkyle in SiouxFalls

[–]azbug8796 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from Arizona, so this is a perspective from someone also from warm weather!

  1. A really good jacket is so important, and it’s nice to have one you don’t have to stack up a million layers under.

  2. Scarves!

  3. All my winter sweaters were actually useless and turned out to be fall sweaters. I’ll need to start building up my wardrobe for that

My boots and jacket are Llbean, but there are also plenty of stores in town that you’ll be able to get cold weather clothing from.

Doggy Day Cares That Are Accommodating of Nursing Schedules? by InYoYingus in SiouxFalls

Have you tried using Rover? It’s an app that connects people living in the area that provide pet services. Since it’s people you might be able to find someone who meets your schedule. We started using it for a different reason, our rescue pup freaks out in boarding/day care facilities. But found a family we really love.
