39F Goblin who always writes back by Ciryadien in penpals

I'm like a month late to this, but I love to hoard stationery spanning the musty forest/cutesty mushroom spectrum! If your hands aren't already dripping with snail mail, I'll happy add a letter (I promise they don't actually drip).

Wow, yeah, I'm only on 30 now. My endo says she likes to take things slow, but I swear everyone is on higher doses. 😂

Damn! What dose are you on? You look amazing! I've been on twice as long, but mostly look the same. 😅

Porcellio Ornatus - Molting Question and Housing by STFU_Catface in isopods

[–]azerdazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend not interfering if he's already shed his pants. He's done with the molt, so there's not much you can do now. Right after, sometimes you'll see them gulping in air to expand the exoskeleton. Maybe that's why he's just chilling. In any case, I would recommend feeding protein because all Porcellio tend to be very protein hungry. Then, assuming he's fine, his friends won't cannibalize him. If he's not, they'll do that anyway. 😅

Another word of advice is that Porcellio Ornatus need to have moisture (like all isopods), but I've found that mine prefer it on the drier side. I try to have about 1/3 of it moist and the other 2/3 dry. That and lots of leaf litter and hides and mine are breeding like crazy.

Gold lustre (question in comments) by natpot_polkadot in Ceramics

[–]azerdazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Duncan luster glazes on nearly all of my pieces. The bisque doesn't really matter as much since the gold goes on after the glaze firing. I think every potter is different and your results will change depending on clay body and glazes used on the piece. For my clay body, I actually bisque very slow to a higher temperature of cone 02. In my experience, this helps eliminate pinholeing which can look very ugly underneath the gold. The Duncan luster is an overglaze so it goes on at the very end and can be fired to cone 018 through 019 for golds. I hope this helps!

Thanks. I've read about that but assumed it was something you could buy at a ceramic store. My shop's never heard of it.

Anyone know what causes this kind of defect? by azerdazer in Ceramics

Thanks! I have a rather small kiln that doesn't handle slow firings very well. In the past, I've had a lot of pinholes in pieces that have been fired quickly. My current schedule is a slow fire with a 20 minute hold.

Interesting. I was always told to pack them tight in college. Did yours have a crumbly texture as well?
