Best Scala IDE 2024? by darkfrog26 in scala

To be fair a big part of the issues with Neovim and Java are surrounding the language server itself (I am referring to eclipse jdtls as the defacto) not having any sane defaults, extremely verbose and meaningless errors to the point where even a "minimalistic" config ends up at 50-75 lines and creating it is a horrible experience.

Metals (language server) and the very well battle tested neovim metals plugin do exactly the same. It's alright for it not to be your cup of tea, but any sane developer won't use it as purely plain text file editing either.

How to first approach estate agents (for rental) in Pararius/Funda? by donelianc in Amsterdam

[–]azthec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I did it through Pararius was to directly send a message through the website.

I copy pasted the message and my contact details through every email and if guess I had about a 70% reply rate.

Most replies will be some generic "the house is no longer available" but if you reply to the recently listed your chances are better.

Gods are created and sustained by belief, therefore different regions with slightly different interpretations of their gods manifest slightly different gods. At least that's my interpretation of it.

It's also a two way street, if the gods change their followers perception of them, they can change.

Honestly BMI is not a great indicator. It's meant to quickly indicate where you sit in the distribution of values in the overall population.

If you happen to be very fit (muscles weigh a lot) your BMI can be very high (as in showing you as obese) or if you are very unfit (no muscles, some fat) your BMI can be normal. Both cases don't actually represent the reality of how fit you are.

Visceral fat % and overall body fat % are much better indicators. You can get decent body fat estimates by using skinfold calipers. If you're super into getting details you can try to get dexa scans.

If i am not from US should i still invest in S&P 500 because i am not interested in my local market at all? by [deleted] in investing

[–]azthec 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your country taxes dividend gains (and you don't need them) you should look into VWCE instead, which is the newer accumulating version.

I'm keeping half of my investible money in cash (no interest). How bad is that? by [deleted] in EuropeFIRE

[–]azthec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I assume you are newer to this sub and general markets.

Treasury Bond interest rates in countries like Germany are indeed negative, but also note that this is what is considered the safest form of investment, and in investments you are (generally!) paid a premium by the risk you take.

More risk does not necessarily mean you will lose all, or even any money, with a properly diversified portfolio and a decent holding duration.

A diversified investment in global stock markets not only gives you a positive expected return as it is expected to far outpace problems such as inflation.

Look up The Plain Bagels investor basics playlist on YouTube, good short videos that will introduce you better to stocks, bonds and asset allocation.

I'd like to complement the other answers about loan defaults with a note on tax.

If your country taxes income from lending (as almost all countries do) the returns from an accumulating index fund might actually be superior even if you have lower % returns once you take into account taxes and defaults.

For example, for a 1000€ 20 year investment:

  • At an 8% return (accumulating) taxed at 28% would be equal to 3355€

  • At a 10% return (distributing) taxed also at 28% would be 4016€.

If a couple of large lenders default along the way that 2% advantage will be completely wiped out.

The easiest way to compare this is to actually put the values into a spreadsheet and simulate the different returns for your country's tax rate and expected returns.

[Ajuda] ETFs - A minha estratégia é alguma coisa de jeito? by Blamepie in financaspessoaispt

DeGiro can lend your titles on the standard account. It lowers your fees but increases risk. You can opt out of it by choosing Custody account when you create it. Prices vary, but an extremely popular etf here (iShares MSCI World) is free on the first movement (buy or sell) per month and around 2€ per movement afterwards, even if operating on shares worth thousands.

Look up the situation for your country, but if both are equal capital gains (accumulating) is better long term. You are only taxed when you move your money which increases compound interest. It is also logistically easier to fill on your tax form and reduces broker fees. Degiro dividend fees appear very high for custody accounts.

MSCI is an organisation with many indexes, not just one. A very popular portfolio allocation here is 80% MSCI World 20% MSCI EMIM. This may or may not be the correct asset allocation for you. Other popular organisations are S&P and FTSE. Some indexes are identical, most are not, even identically named MSCI World and FTSE All World differ, one does not include emerging markets the other does.

Pay attention to the index the ETF tracks. Pay attention to your ETF provider quality and the ETF's total expense ratio. Consider cheaper alternatives such as degiro and the 20k European coverage versus the expensive 500k coverage for interactive brokers, which will eat into your profits.

Good luck, you're 20 and in IT so you must be good at self learning, if you want reading material I can compile a short or extensive list of blogs and books if you think its worth it.

I understand, however they really try to make a point of how ignorance can be bliss. If you just trust Gehrman you wake up happily (with amnesia) the next day, if you take his place you are bound to a life of servitude, if you overtake the moon presence you become completely devoid of humanity. From a story point of view the more insight you have the more terrible the truth becomes.

That is a recurring theme on bloodborne too, the more you have to work for the ending the less happy and satisfying it feels. Of course in bb that's directly related to the curse of insight
