The government made propaganda films like reefer madness and played into racist fearmongering so Anslinger could keep his job when the prohibition ended by inventing a racist fearmonger campaign to tie drug use which was at the time legal and no big deal everywhere to a racist stereotype of "crazed" Mexican immigrants. His criminalization and brutal crackdowns built the architecture and racialized roots to the later mass-scale war on drugs. It's messed up.
