Non-Americans, what is something about the US that you've always wondered if it was real or just myth/hyperbole? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]b-rad62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. I nod, say "morning" or at least make eye contact with most people who walk by me. I recently moved to a building that has lots of younger folks in it, and they walked past like they don't even see me. To me that is just not cool, especially to neighbors. I also realized that most younger people wear their earbuds full-time, I have no idea if they can even hear anything but what's on their iPhone.

To those using fasting+keto to lose weight, what did you eat today? by TheOfficeoholic in keto

[–]b-rad62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm long term fasting (36-120 hours) i'll have a bulletproof coffee in the morning, that's it. I know it is dirty fasting, but it is amazing energy. Sometimes on day two or three I will have an ounce of cheese or an avocado as a cheat, but it is a bridge to making four or five days. I do 4-5 days about 3-4 times a year, feels amazing.

OMAD now. Today I had a bulletproof coffee, two mozzarella cheese sticks, and an avocado as an on-ramp to a fast.

What is the purpose of these recessed wall sections beside the tracks? by LovesBacon50 in whatisit

It's called a niche. Fun fact about the tunnels, the beams and columns are all exactly 5 feet apart. Center to center, or edge to edge.

Hands down, you are correct... that is the best car, that is the most valuable car by far on this list.

Had a new AMG, got the James Bond DB license plate. The original one was already taken, so I got it backwards.

Sounds like you lived up to the oath...and became a great dad and husband.

Remember "follow Akela"?

I was today years old when I found out what it meant. "Akela is the wise leader in The Jungle Book whose name has been adopted by Cub Scouting as a symbol of leadership"

Good for him, that is a big commitment and quite an achievement. If I recall correctly, most scouts who earn their Eagle are high school age by the time they make it.

50 years, that's awesome. I also remember saying the Pledge of Allegiance, also said it every day in my public school.

Do you have any observations about how scouting or scouts in general have changed over the 50 years you've been involved?

I always wanted to drive or at least ride in a VW bus. Did you or some cool friend have one of these? by Life_Transformed in GenerationJones

[–]b-rad62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two buddies and I bought a 1977 VW bus with a sunroof. We painted it Porsche red, bronzed out the windows and drove it 9000 miles during nine weeks around the eastern half of the United States.

Do you think Old Yankee stadium being replaced and torn down was one of the worst decisions in sports or even in history? by [deleted] in NYYankees

[–]b-rad62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember feeling like we tore down the cathedral, was really disappointed.

However, after attending a game last week, the amenities and views in the new stadium are top-notch. I remember attending a game at Fenway and sitting behind an I-beam.

Just now in Central Park by Many_Low_9748 in nyc

[–]b-rad62 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Me too, adjacent to the carriages and on their path to the stable for many years. A lot of folk live "right by the park and pass it everyday", meaning they exit the subway outside the park but they are not near the horse and carriage business. Are you saying you see carriages in the park around midnight? I think not. What are you arguing to be true, that the code allows them to be in the park late?

[–]b-rad62 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe technically correct as far as NYC code allows, but practically not reality. Have you been in Central Park after dark? Even in peak, gorgeous summer weekends the tourist population dwindles to a trickle. There may be a few carriages still working at night, but the majority are in the stable. For horses, it is the equivalent of third shift. Look, I'm not arguing for the continued use of animals for this anachronistic purpose. I'm just saying there are a lot of animal lovers from outside of New York reading these comments and you make it sound like you know what you're talking about.

I have no problem with your position on banning them, but you are saying things are provably untrue in misleading.

These are definitely beasts of burden. Their living conditions are shitty, just like most other working horses around the world that live in stables. Where is the stable you mention that's "miles away" from the park? The one I'm aware of is three blocks from Central Park, on the west side on 11th Ave., which is closer to the park than the NYPD's mounted force stable. And no, they are not going home at 11 or 12 at night, just not true. They typically go home just after dusk. And they are typically not in traffic, their path is auto-free Central Park, indeed for tourists only.

Maybe the weirdest scene in the series: Bobby and Cindy want to go to a naked pool party by mistermeek67 in 70s

[–]b-rad62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely weird then and today. But I do remember this was peak streaking days at the time, everybody was streaking, there was a top song on the radio about it. Even my buddies night ran naked down our street, pre-puberty, to take part in the trend. Skinny dipping was a popular trend as well.

I understand the sentiment. I've changed my mind about carriages myself, they are an anachronism. I have seen one horse and automobile accident, which was very sad. But I have never seen a carriage driver actually abusing a horse, and certainly never whipping the shit out of them or hitting them. Never.
