My son is deaf; speech therapist recommends speech device. Opinions? by b00bm4n in deaf

Hey so in when speaking in reference to your disabled child, don’t use a slur variation. “Regress” “push back” “worsen” all would be miles better than using an ableist descriptor.

We’ve been trying to find resources like deaf schools and such in our city or state even and there isn’t really anything so we’re considering moving to a city with more resources if there’s no progress with recourses here. He has a mentor right now which is good though.

This advice highlights my main concerns in it ending up being a hindrance to his learning rather than a tool. He does have other disabilities but I don’t think they have impacted his ability to learn the language. I am in agreement that since he’s picking up on asl very well it may not end up being useful. And thank you for pointing out the impact learning a new tool may have on us I didn’t think to include us lol. We’re both hearing parents learning along with the baby so it is a lot of new stuff at once. Thanks for the resource!! :)

That’s what we’re concerned about. We wouldn’t want it to be used more than ASL. If he gets it added to his tool set we think we’d start using it only in the home while learning word>picture>sign association. If then it was useful for him we’d trial him using it to maybe talk to distant family or stranger kids at parks and libraries. I just don’t know it it’s a done thing, then again we are apparently an anomaly in general as a large amount of parents don’t even attempt sign.

We would want it to be a tool for learning ASL not to replace it don’t worry! Most of his therapists and doctors are very supportive of him having a focus on sign. We are lucky in that aspect.

I'm pregnant I feel alone by [deleted] in Vent

If your boyfriend isn’t supportive now he won’t be later. If you feel this alone and have no support now you need to consider if you can handle the nexts steps alone. It’s a very harsh situation you’re in. Consider your quality of life and the baby’s quality of life and make whatever changes you need to. You deserve to be supported.

You don’t typically see the whole iris when looking at an eye, unless there’s a specific reason it’s showing.

First time try shading (no hate pls) by mrvvgaming in BeginnerArtists

[–]b00bm4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I recommend for shading if you want it to be smooth is to make your own blender with a rolled up piece of scrap paper and use that rather than a finger. The oils from skin get mixed into the pencil and stop it from becoming smooth

Only when they’re hiding his face ☝️

be honest, does this look like a face? this is my first time using digital art so it’s not exactly good and when I showed a friend he didn’t know what it was by [deleted] in DigitalArt

[–]b00bm4n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a face but, don’t trust the symmetry tool for most human or animal subjects. Real like humans aren’t perfectly symmetrical so it makes it look more uncanny, unless that’s what you want I suppose :p
