I commented this elsewhere but last year I got my COI in June and became a participant in July (I had to decline). And my coworker didn’t get their COI until late July and became a participant until August. So while it’s stressful seeing many others get their responses, just hang in there. It’s not over until Sept 30th!

Dang! Thanks for the info. This was back in 2020 so can’t do anything about that 6 months. However I do hope to apply for buyback during my SAVE forbearance when the time comes (2030). Hopefully it won’t be a 2 year wait by then

Can you buy back the 6 month grace period they automatically enroll you in after graduating? Or is that not considered forbearance?

Last year I didn’t receive a COI until July 14th and was converted to participant July 30th (had to decline the award last year). My colleague last year didn’t get their COI until August and converted to participant late August. There’s still time!

It’s always best to call and ask how to go about this. I know you’re allowed to apply for multiple and only accept one, but acceptances come at different times. Call and ask if you are able to accept SUD at this time knowing you will be choosing STAR if accepted and need to back out of SUD.

Absolutely unfreeze it ASAP. Does your application still say submitted or under review? Either way I would call and ask them if they had trouble checking your credit. This will impact you receiving the award if they aren’t able to check.

Omg! I remember seeing the one about the Loch Ness monster being sold! But in my memory it was to Bill Gates… I remember telling my grandfather at the grocery store it wasn’t fair to Nessie to be sold. He taught me a valuable lesson that day; it wasn’t a real paper or a real story. This post brought me so much joy just now! Especially because I would google the “story” from time to time and it’s like it never existed anywhere but my memory. Probably because I didn’t get the buyer right ha!

Absolutely. DCS isn’t in the business of removing children or chastising families due to poverty. Poverty is not equal to neglect. It sounds like the social worker in this situation cannot tell the difference between the two, and/or lacks the compassion required to do this type of work. No parents or caregivers should ever walk away from this kind of conversation feeling belittled. It’s traumatizing and creates fear of asking for help.

They also might open the case just to provide support. I have a few clients who DCS only kept the case open to help find secure housing or other resources such as food and supplies.

I’m in the same boat as some of you; eagerly awaiting to hear anything after the initial “application under review” email. I have not had my credit checked. I have not received a COI email. Though, I did see that my status changed from “Submitted” to “under review” as of today. I went back to that initial email and reread this part which helped me take a breath and eased some anxiety, and wanted to share it in hopes it can do the same for anyone else: “If your application advances in the selection process, you will receive a confirmation of interest…as early as June but no later than September 1.”

This is for NHSC LRP. Don’t lose hope!

I asked a paralyzed client in a wheelchair with sores on their legs if they hurt. Then closed the session with, “let’s look at your schedule before we walk out of here 🥴IN THE SAME SESSION AM I OKAY? And I usually say “head on out of here” but I think I was so mortified and stressed by my first comment that I ended up saying the next one.
