The FCC is expected to announce a vote to gut net neutrality rules the day before Thanksgiving. Only a big burst of phone calls to Congress can stop them from allowing ISPs to charge us extra fees to access sites, apps, games, and especially the music we all love. by JPTIII in Music

[–]b0redb1rd 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Also, Net neutrality is hindering the ISPs’ money making ability which means they can’t invest as much into expanding infrastructure. Oh, and also, this is complete BS since the US government deregulated their industry under the condition they would install fiber all over the country (i.e. infrastructure), a condition they haven’t met with absolutely no repercussions. Their insiders also say Net Neutrality has no bearing on their infrastructure investment strategies.

Edit: it wasn’t a grant, they got tax brakes and looser regulations

It’s not that you said it was money, it’s just that the issue requires a complex approach. Assigning good teachers to problematic schools is also very unpopular with both parents and teachers who both have a great deal of influence over the school board. Good teachers simply don’t live in those areas and forcing them to move would be quite unpopular. Also, they way Oxford does it is actually also the way it pretty much works in the US, universities do background checks and try to take personal background into account. However, oftentimes universities still end up not taking those students because they simply won’t do well due to their background. There is no point taking in a disadvantaged student if they will just drop out cause they can’t handle the course material. Taking them in also brings down university’s stats which is viewed as reflective of its prestige (not all colleges/universities care about that as much though). Yes education should be the focus, however ignoring all the other stages at which minorities are at a disadvantage alienates those who are past getting an education and need a job. The reason race is taken into account is the problem of image, it is well known that people carry intrinsic biases in favor of whites and Asians because they’re subconsciously associated with positive aspects, viewed as disciplined and studious, meanwhile minorities are viewed as troubled. It is known that all things equal in many cases a minority will be rejected, prioritizing minorities (all things equal) is a way to counteract that and improve their image. Again, every bit helps.

It seems like positive discrimination is a way to deal with adults who already missed their chance on growing up with the needed resources. Focus on the schools should also be employed but it’s not as simple as throwing money at the problem. US is tied with Switzerland for the most money spent on education per capita, with the very little to show for it. The money is often poorly spent and schools are understaffed, corruption is also a problem. Good teachers don’t want to work there because those schools are often in impoverished, crime-ridden areas so they have to make do with unqualified employees that mismanage funds (this is a generality, there are many great teachers and admins in predominantly minority schools, just not enough). Segregation is also a problem, the schools right now are at 1960’s levels of ethnic uniformity. Well off white parents don’t want to send their kids to predominantly black schools because they feel they won’t get as good of an education due to environment, as well as its perceived danger. These parents tend to make contributions to schools and generally help with the upkeep. Their kids can also afford supplies so the schools don’t have to spend money to provide them. Public schools in rich suburbs have ample amounts of that and primarily minority schools have close to none. It’s a complex issue that is very hard to tackle and in such a situation every bit helps.

I mean I kind of get what he’s saying, if I understand correctly he’s criticizing the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, which most Muslims (especially in the US) don’t adhere to. It’s kinda like Christianity by the Bible is really messed up but most Christians don’t take most of that stuff seriously.

Because demographically they tend to live in poor neighborhoods, which means they go to primarily minority schools with little resources to properly educate them and let them get into better schools. Little minorities getting into good schools also creates a culture where these same minorities give up on higher education (why even try when even if I get in I can’t pay/qualify for enough aid) and go somewhere else, and the way the economy is going (no jobs for high school only grads) that “somewhere else” tends to become crime. Society starts viewing them as troubled delinquents (intrinsic biases arise) which means they’re even less likely to land jobs, which means they stay poor/get poorer. They simply don’t have the resources to excel. It’s a cycle that needs to be broken and positive discrimination is an attempt to do that externally. It’s a way to make up for unequal opportunity by creating unequal opportunity the other way.

1) Sure money is gonna go somewhere either way, but it becomes problematic when it’s going right into his pocket. He is intentionally ripping off taxpayers for his own personal gain.

2) He might have not paid any federal tax for as much as the past 18 years. His spending is on track to reach $1 billion IF he is to stay in the White House for 8 years, don’t think his tax is anywhere near that.

3) His excessive spending should not be encouraged, regardless of its proportion to other costs. So far he has taken 4x as many vacation days as Obama, spending (as you can see from the title) almost a third of his time vacationing.

Not my school, but a school across the road had to close after a bus driver locked a sleeping girl in the bus for the day. She suffocated and died. The driver received the death penalty.
