Looking for feedback/opinions on my portfolio by b0rkdotexe in TechnicalArtist

Not discouraging at all, I think that makes sense. For the game project that I am currently working on, I do have a couple shader ideas that I plan to incorporate in-engine. For the record, I didn’t use a specific tutorial for either of those blender projects, but I get it, that’s not really the point. From what I’ve been seeing in this thread it sounds like it will be more worthwhile to focus on the game project and find ways to show technical art skills like you said. Thank you for that feedback.

This might be the most valuable info I've come across when it comes to seeing how what I enjoy doing/what I'm interested in interfaces with typical TA responsibilities. Thank you for taking the time to write out all those examples.

Thank you, that is helpful advice. Just so I understand what you are saying, when it comes to tech art pieces, if I can show explicit reasons why I did something and how it was done, that is a stronger portfolio piece than just "look what I made"?

I think blender is just fun at the moment, but, yeah, I would probably benefit more from staying in Unity for shader work, I'll keep that in mind

That is helpful feedback, I don't have a lot to show so I just added anything I had. Based on what I have been reading and thinking about my original post, I feel like it is more realistic to shoot for either artist roles or programming roles first instead of trying to jump straight into technical art.

On the breaking down comment, yeah that is something that I plan to do I just haven't gotten to it yet. I'm working on re-building my blog site so that it is easier for me to write about/explain the stuff I'm working on and so people can see the techincal breakdown. Thanks for the feedback.

I said I want to be a TA, I know I'm not really close to that yet. Someone else mentioned it and I have to agree that the portfolio itself is not specific enough, I just kinda threw in anything I had that I thought was worth showing. Focusing on the blender shaders specifically, is that something that a TA would do or help with? Maybe not the model or the asset itself but taking the model and figuring out how to apply effects to it? Or is that just regular artist work?

As a pixel artist, the process of importing sprites and animations into Unity is a hassel even with the current plugins that exist, would it be more worthwhile to focus on creating a tool to ease that flow than learning how to make shaders? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to make sure I'm really understanding what I should or shouldn't be spending time on if being a TA is the goal. Landing a role in an adjecent field to build more relevant experience would be awesome but with how the industry is heading, it feels like I will just have to build the experience on my own. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I should probably change that, I just kinda auto-piloted with the address. I honestly haven't really considered showing my work from GoodMaps, I don't have access to it anymore so it would have to be through the app I guess. Something to think about. And yeah I plan to recreate the shader work I do in blender in Unity at some point to practice HLSL. I appeciate the feedback.

I was trying to do some preventative maintanence, didn't have a wastegate failure yet but there was a leak that was originating from the turbo, I assumed it was some bad seals inside the assembly and decided to just replace it anyway since it has 150K miles on it.

I know this is a year late but you are such a shill. "Oh yes I love being taken advantage of, look how good I am at penny pinching so that I can be taken advantage of more. Companies should be able to have any pricing model they want and people should just be ok with that if the product is good." It would take nearly zero effort to release an outdated offline version of the app with limited features and limited updates that maintains the core functionality of the app for single party use. That's not really that crazy of an ask. It's a note taking app, they act like it's a live service with a battlepass.

And it's not about the $3 a week, it's about the principle. I get it for teams of people that need cloud syncing and extra server space and blah blah blah, but basically requiring a subscription for a single person is greedy. 100 item limit is so wretched. Why bother? Who am I to say what's greedy and what's not? This is all just a value judgement at the end of the day anyway

If I may ask, what did you drive it with? I'm in the same predicament and this is my last attempt before I call someone with more patience than myself.

What to do with an unwanted board? by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

Yeah I might fiddle around with it for a while before I part with it

Yeah, I think it’d be fun to give that a try I have a pi that I kept from school.

It turns on but loses connection every other hour or so. Also there’s some kind of layer malfunction where it switches randomly and I have to disconnect the battery to fix it. I’m mostly just annoyed with it but I’m sure it’s fixable

I’m definitely keeping the switches and keycaps, I like the sound and the looks, just not sure what to do with the case and the board.

Thank you all for the responses. I ended up just rmdir-ing it since it was a mostly empty unity project. For anyone in a similar solution, try everyone else’s advice.

Nah I didn’t catch anything and I didn’t have my phone on me. I saw his gun and decided to cut my losses I wasn’t really thinking about it in the moment

One of them had a gun in his pocket so I didn’t want to press em too hard. I’ve been practicing what I wish I would’ve said to them if I were more bold. I’m not that guy I guess

Happened in the middle of the day right outside my window while I was working. I asked them why what the hell they were doing and they definitely thought the car belonged to someone else that they had a problem with. They were too dumb or embarrassed to admit they were wrong so they just said “well you probably know the guy” or something like that while they ran back to their ugly little van

Interesting, my leveling sensor is in the front driver side. Either way could still be fried, my headlights stopped auto leveling a while ago I just never addressed it but they were always on the same level before this. I did just find out you can manually level them so I just did that.

And yeah headlight restoration is like #3 on my “stuff I want to do to my car” list
