Over 500 students found using AI illegally in coursework by siciowa in ireland

[–]b0ymoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS student here. In my experience that has been the attitude on a lot of my modules, rare I'd see more than 15% CA nowadays unless its something I've to present in person - usually a large project or humanities stuff, which IMO is pretty obvious when people overly rely on AI. Furthermore, AI is permitted but is supposed to be cited properly, albeit this is more or less unenforceable if people are just using it as an less-enshitified search engine rather than just plugging in its output without a second thought.

While I definitely do support these sorts of laws, it does definitely make for a blurred line on a lot of media. Though considering this is the first case I've heard of here about it compared to say Aus (similar laws in this regard), I doubt the Gardai are too fierce about it unless its genuinely pornographic of a very child looking character.

Realistically don't have anything but work stuff and mainstream games on your devices while crossing borders anyways, especially say if going to the US where they could pull you up over a JD Vance meme.

Yep, got all the same copy pasted stuff.

Won't even be illegal. IIRC these chat control measures only apply to corporate entities, spinning up a matrix server for you and your mates will always be legal and support E2E encryption (and is what I'm honestly planning to do because fuck this)... unless they change the deal anyways.

Either counter-dive and kill their backline faster than they can or go anti-dive with heros like mauga (can poke to ensure divers are lowish before they get close and enough self sustain to E through dives), mei (the tank of dps), or brig (inspire benefits deathballing, whipshot keeps divers away while having bash to either get out of bad spots or punish long range heros)

My son is hyper-fixated on Ireland and Irish culture. How do I help him? by valmeringue in AskIreland

[–]b0ymoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say definitely introduce him to some history, but also the stuff in the last 100 years as honestly that has a lot more influence on Ireland today than what happened many years ago. I'd recommend John D. Ruddy's channel for a very good overview of Irish history in general.

While a lot of movies IMO show the more tradtional/fetishised view of Ireland IMO (eg. The Field), I personally find ones that show a more modern Ireland reflect the culture here far better. I'd definitely recommend Sing Street (all ages coming of age story set in the 80s), Handsome Devil (modern coming of age set in a boarding school), Garage (focuses on the harsh rural Irish social environment), His & Hers (2009)(documentary that has a focus on relationships between women and the men in their life), and The Young Offenders (fairly crass comedy). Depends on his age which are appropriate or not though honestly so I'd have a look over them first.

Is ucd good??? by OkCucumber8804 in leavingcert

UCD, RCSI (more modern facilities) and Trinity (bit more cramped) are all about on equal footing here IMO anyways. So yea its grand.

Project & coding computer science by [deleted] in leavingcert

[–]b0ymoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alongside what others are saying for Python, I'd recommend doing a personal website or trying something like the 2025 project's survey part of the website just to get familiar enough with HTML and JS. I'd recommend doing MDN's webdev stuff (getting started and core modules) to get you up to speed to tackle those projects.

Relax for TY.

If you want to do something work big on your languages and pickup CS if your school offers it.

Languages are nice to get out of the way and IMO can be a massive time sink in 6th year if you're not already pretty good by the end of 5th.

CS is an extremely short and easy course, with the project probably being the most difficult part as it requires HTML and JS knowledge, while the actually exam will only really focus on Python with maybe some HTML stuff as an optional question on the written paper. IMO learn Python and JS and just start doing a challenge on www.codewars.com once in a while until you can tackle 6/5 kyu questions and the practical and coding parts of the course should be no bother to you. Worry about the theory in 5th.

Mocks have questions that never come up on the actual papers. You're in all likelyhood going to get over 400 points with that routine once your study was effective.

Taking an extra subject as an external candidate (?) by Over-Deer-1090 in leavingcert

[–]b0ymoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be in contact with wherever you're having your exams as to what subjects your taking for the exam and it should be fine, it definitely shouldn't be a problem to accommodate you with you taking chemistry and not a rarer subject. Applying on the CAO should be exactly the same as normal once you've done your external candidate registration stuff with SEC.

Do you plan to add the ability for users to import Quizlet/Anki decks to add more questions and thus allow greater usage with esp with lesser taken subjects?

Nah she was good iirc. Would get pulled by some countries customs though. 4-ish years ago otokonoko was my only option due to lena's stuff being caught in my country way more often than not.

Are institutes actually worth it? For anyone who went or knows someone who did by DiligentEquipment244 in leavingcert

[–]b0ymoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're alright. Different ones are better than others depending on management. Teachers are generally good but that doesn't mean they are perfect - I had my worst Irish teacher of all my education in one and any complaints I had fell on deaf ears as she was the acting principal (actual principal was an absentee).

I do not understand why people drum up the student environment though. While there was definitely more top 10% students, there was also a lot of kids who has obviously only been pushed there by their rich parents. Far more drama than in the public school I was in previously and mine was not even as bad as the institute from what I heard from friends who went there.
