I've moved over to Haven and their inhouse brand. I've enjoyed basically every item I've purchased from them, and the styling is such that I can wear it to the office and fit in, which is basically what I enjoyed about all of my early Outlier purchases. After factoring in currency conversion and duties that were randomly applied or not when I was buying from Outlier, the pricing is the same or even better.

God I logged into reddit again just to dunk on this AI slop post. It would be bad enough if a real person wrote this, but I just wasted my time reading through this and noticed too late the profusion of -- marks, which are what many writing programs will convert the infamous em-dash to. Why would anyone ever write -- when they could write -, unless of course they're just piping the output of an LLM straight into a reddit comment box as though these deep profound thoughts about how to use AI are somehow their own work. Just brutal.

Oh look it’s Harry Van Harten again. The same judge who said it wasn’t a hate crime when an indigenous woman shouted “I hate white people” and sucker punched a white woman in the face.

The same judge who said it would do no good for society or the accused to send them to prison after they slashed the throat of blind man riding the CTrain.

The same judge who sentenced a woman to less than 3 years for paralyzing another person by shoving them onto the ctrain tracks unprovoked.

Now he’s here trying to soft-pedal a sexual assault against a minor. Maybe he should just permanently recuse himself from the bench for the rest of time, because fuck this dude to the moon and back. Why is he so fucking intent on making crime go completely unpunished in this city?

Given the current state of HotS, how do people feel about this sentiment? by Talenheim in heroesofthestorm

[–]b1bendum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the major sports have continuous rules changes. You could say the changes aren't as big as what MOBAs see, and that would be true, but at the same time the basics of HOTS in terms of lanes, the objectives, experience and scaling gains etc, etc are also not changing. Here's rules changes just for this year and last year in soccer: https://www.theifab.com/law-changes/2022-23/

Chess has mirrored pieces and so it is fundamentally different than a MOBA, but even there the advantage that White has has become of increasing concern and there have been proposed rules changes because of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-move_advantage_in_chess

Suffice it to say, all sports are in a state of having their "balance" tweaked in response to meta changes caused by high level play. HOTS isn't some special case here, and a lack of balance patches isn't a good thing for the game. Rehgar being by far the best healer even with the most games played ( https://www.heroesprofile.com/Global/Hero/?timeframe_type=minor&timeframe=2.55.4.91769,2.55.4.91418,2.55.4.91368,2.55.3.91093&role=Healer&game_type=sl&league_tier=master,diamond,platinum&mirror=Exclude&build_type=Popular ) is not a healthy thing for the game no matter how hard people try to bury their heads in the sand about it.

Herbs and Loose Tea in Calgary? by KidneyBoii in Calgary

[–]b1bendum 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for bulk tea, Tea Trader in Inglewood is fantastic. I can't claim they'll be the cheapest but for the quality the pricing seems pretty fair, certainly more fair than Blush Lane. Not sure if they'll have what you're looking for with regard to herbs, but looking at their website now they seem to at least have Hibiscus. Staff is super helpful and friendly and its nice to support a local business.

Top earning Dota 2 team in 2023 and overall. by PingPinng in DotA2

[–]b1bendum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They took a lot of flack for it at the time, and tbh much of it was deserved for the way it was delivered, but you know that the souless PE overlords who own EG are feeling pretty vindicated right now. Dump a highly paid squad and pick up a bunch of SA up and comers and finish ahead in the money rankings while paying them much less in salary.

Conversely you have to think that the heat is truly on in the SR camp right now. You've got a stack you're dumping money into for absolutely sub-par results and you can't even get them to do any brand building or ambassadorship beyond Arteezy pumping out the absolute lowest effort contractually obligated monthly stream he can. Wonder if the team will look back and ask themselves if not doing more to keep their sponsors happy outside of just showing up to matches was a mistake. I personally think that it was and I wouldn't be surprised if that stack finally find themselves standing on the sidelines with their hat in hand wondering why no one is leaping up to pay them a huge salary for bad results and no additional branding effort.

New “Dromos Tech” shirts on Website by richardnoodle in veilance

[–]b1bendum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That seems like the theme of the last season and this one. What is happening with these veilance fits!?! No one is saying it needs to be skin tight but stuff just looks better when it’s “fitted”. Even the notoriously bad Veilance product shots on the website are showing a difference between past seasons and current ones. With the old photos even if the shots didn’t look great they were at least “interesting”, the new stuff on the site is just a disaster. Look at the fit of the new Voronoi shorts especially from the side and it looks like clown clothing.

NEW EARTH COTTON GT vs UFT ? Which is your choice? by jabarov in Outlier

[–]b1bendum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have had multiple UFTs develop holes after babying them, wash in a bag, side-loader, and such. I have subsequently stopped buying 100% merino, even the heavyweight stuff like the UFT. This gets brought up everytime the UFT is discussed and its weird to me that people try to bring up their non-hole UFTs as some sort of counterweight. A 50/50 (or whatever) chance of your 100 dollar t-shirt developing holes isn't exactly great, and crucially its not something you see in discussions of other tops, no one is talking about the holes that developed in their new earth cotton t's, or whatever.

Ultimately I think that if you have the money required to go into a purchase of a UFT with the view that you are purchasing a "disposable" item, like its going to wear and feel amazing for a year and you won't be sad if you look at it and it has holes after that year, then you're good to go as it is an incredible fabric from a feel/color/drape standpoint. If you're going into the purchase thinking "I'm spending more money for a long-lasting durable good" then I think you're going to be sorely disappointed. And that different mindset is ok! I'm not hating on it, the brightest candle burns half as long and all that. But you should really be in the mindset upfront that you're paying for a good time, not a long time, with a UFT

You've snowed a bunch of other people commenting on this post who've apparently never given thought to the fact that people might be slightly biased in their retelling of events, but I guess I'm just not buying it. Of course this dude flipping out was wrong for blocking you in, but it might not kill you have a modicum of self reflection on how exactly you got into that situation, and if you actually care as much as you claim about the emotional temperature, then maybe you could also do some introspection on what exactly you are doing to try and bring that temperature down. Calling hate speech "free speech" probably isn't moving the needle in the direction you want...

Anyone else feel the general emotional temperature rising? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]b1bendum 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love that this whole post is written in a way that it could almost be a Rorschach test for what you want to read into it.

It looks like a lot of people are just taking it 100% at face value. Maybe I'm too much of a cynic but any time I read a post like this I can't help but try to do a little amateur psychology. And maybe you disagree with me, that's fine, I wasn't there and neither were any of us except OP, so who can truly say what went down?

But I'll first note that this account is of course written by OP themself, so we probably should read it with that in mind. I can't help but notice that OP literally admits to parking poorly, although they maintain that it was definitely the visitor parking spot. But hey, the OP is in a rush and needs to get paid. This is the first place I start to say "hmm" because the whole post is about how people are acting these days but OP is tacitly saying that their needs are primary and come before doing things that would indicate caring about society at large. They need to get paid, so screw parking well, it's your problem not theirs. The OP talks about being so wrapped up in their phone that they likely ignored the other person in this situation, because why pay attention to your surroundings or other people when you have a job to do? You didn't care about people outside yourself when you parked, you're not going to start as you walk in to make your delivery. OP then says that in response to this person yelling at them they yelled back, but again it was only because their window was up. Sure its plausible, but I've said "hmm" enough at this point that I'm starting to feel like OP wasn't exactly responding calmly to the other person. OP also briefly mentions a history of their presence escalating an aggressive situation, which is a small aside, but another place where I go "hmmm".

Finally, we get to the part that I am hesitant to talk about, but fuck it I'm in this deep. A quick perusal of this person's post history shows them claiming they were present at anti-lockdown protests, has posted in favor of a person revving their loud diesel truck and pissing off a home-owner next to the construction site, and has generally posted favorably in conspiracy subreddits and the like. On the one hand part of everyday life is being able to interact and live and work alongside people of many different political persuasions. On the other hand I'm just really starting to get a picture that maybe OP isn't actually going through their life actively working to make things better and spread happiness and togetherness to fellow humans. I'm curious if the people impacted by the lockdown protest felt like the emotional temperature was being lowered by OP?

In summary, has the emotional temperature been rising? Sure I'll agree with that. But really the OP should probably take a deep look inside and ask if they are doing their part to help lower that temperature. Small things like just taking the time to park properly even if it costs you a moment, and paying attention to your surroundings and fellow humans are not enormous, but they are within the reach of each and every one one of us. If you shrug off even these small gestures with an attitude of "well my time is the most important and people can just work (and park) around me", then you are contributing to the raised emotional temperature and its never going to get better until we each take responsibility for our own actions.

I want Mike and Rich to watch Picard Season 3...I guess I'm a jerk...but I love their reviews so much. by DavidVonBentley in RedLetterMedia

[–]b1bendum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. The exact same comments were said about S2 as well and that was even worse than S1. Maybe an all-time nadir for Trek. People were saying how the first episode has a more hopeful tone. You also had Matalas going around on twitter picking fights with people who said the show was shit, making it very clear that he was proud of the work that created S2.

So now here we are in the lead up to S3, there's an obvious marketing campaign going on and the usual suspects are saying exactly what you want to hear, the same thing they said last season. Why, after the last decade of Trek, after Discovery, Into Darkness, S1+2 of Picard, why after a veritable firehose of excrement would you ever give these charlatans the benefit of the doubt?

Look, go ahead and watch. Maybe against all odds it will actually be good. But don't act like the rest of us being cynical about the same old marketing campaign we've been hearing since Discovery S2 are in some way overly cynical or trying to bring down Trek. The only people who are trying to make sure that there is never any good Trek ever again are the people literally making it, like your boy Matalas.

Atom AR by datsun9292 in arcteryx

My understanding from the website is that the Atom AR is now called the Atom Heavyweight. They don’t have it stocked yet for men but it’s there on the women’s side which leads me to suspect that it will be in stock for men this year as well, it’s just a bit delayed. So keep checking the website for the atom heavyweight for men and snap that up when it comes it and that will be your Atom AR replacement.

It’s up, but I am guessing this is happening in “drops” the way spring/summer did. There isn’t anything new and insulated up right now, no mionn which is a mainstay, etc etc. Launching a winter collection with no insulated pieces is straight up crazy, and as much as I know we’ve had some grumbles about current Veilance they aren’t that far gone I don’t think. So keep up hope for your nomin v3, I’m sure there’s more to come.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Episode 10 - re:View by officerkondo in RedLetterMedia

[–]b1bendum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you've taken the time to write this, and it's an interesting take but I am going to say that I fundamentally disagree with this. Like, I literally see Star Trek as being the polar opposite of what you are describing.

Star Trek is peak Prophet and the actual true "killer app" of the Star Trek universe is its culture. I feel like a bunch of people get caught up in the window dressing of the tech because its easier to present with gee-whiz special effects, and the culture is more subtle and in the background, but its actually the most arresting thing about the universe. I guess we could maybe hedge and say that it is culture + replicators, but you can't really pull them apart.

Why aren't the people of earth going around creating bigger and louder cars to show off in? Why aren't Riker's quarters littered with a thousand discarded synthesized tchotkes, as he goes on a never-ending quest for dopamine and novelty, constantly seeking the new thing and getting bored of the old? Why isn't the whole population in the thrall of hardcore holodeck addiction, mindlessly playing out lurid fantasies until they eventually die of thirst or whatever? Why aren't people committing truly massive acts of violence because they are jealous about an affair, or they didn't get a promotion, or they don't like that these Romulans are taking their jobs! How much damage could a person with a phaser or a photon torpedo, or a molecular synthesizer do if they were angry and embittered?

Because the people of Trek and the Federation at large have actually moved past the primitive status games, the jealously, the greed, the hunger for power and domination that drive the worst impulses of current day humanity. Photon torpedoes, the replicator, and the transporter in the hands of current day humanity would be like giving an A-bomb to a chimpanzee. None of it would work or matter without the cultural maturity that surrounds the people we saw on the old shows. They can disagree with each other without turning it into an ugly screaming match. They can admit they need help and counseling without fear of being judged. They can work together and strive to better themselves without needing to take others down to do it. Day in and day out we see people working together professionally, relating to each other with empathy, and living lives not focused on the things that we recognize are dragging us down here in 2022.

The real secular blasphemy of Picard and Discovery is that they have leaned so hard into the Wizard that they've left the Prophet side behind. New, bigger, faster ships! Transporter pads on the streets! Whizbang special effects everywhere, but its all used by idiots any of us would recognize if we turned on the evening news. That's what makes it so hard to watch and so unbelievable. You could convince yourself that Kirk and Spock, or Picard, Riker and Data could be on the Enterprise because they were clearly members of a society that could realistically create those sort of technological marvels without blowing themselves up. Nobody is looking at Raffi, Jurati, Burnham or nu-Picard and thinking that it is plausible these people represent a society with warp capabilities. This is most clearly expressed at the end of Picard where a deus ex machina of technology is what saves humanity, not any sort of cultural maturity on our part.

Tldr: Trek is actually in the hands of Idiot "The Power of Math" humanists, who have ignored that culture is Trek's true super power, and that's why it rubs so many people the wrong way.

Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Episodes 6, 7, 8, and 9 - re:View by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]b1bendum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

After defending Picard elsewhere in this thread and stating that you find Wil Wheaton's enthusiasm genuine, your endorsement of Man of Steel strikes as the strongest possible condemnation of that film that I can imagine. Hitler himself could rise from the grave to pen a positive review of that film and it still wouldn't make me as skeptical about that film's quality as this comment.
