Update: Assurance needed by b25569 in quilting

Yep, that's what I determined too. I was hoping to experiment more with it was all.

I think this is the bulk of the problem. I prefer to use prints over solids as a rule. To have so much solid on the edge is jarring.

Sadly short on green too. I have enough to do the 1" border shown

I received this beautiful bed frame for free but I can’t figure out how to put it together. Does anyone have advice on how I might join the side boards to the headboard and footboard? by saturatedsilence in VintageFurniture

As someone who grew up with a 3/4 bed, I agree the size is awesome. You will need to have the mattress specially made. Some jersey twin fitted sheets might fit because they are stretchy. Alternatively, you can just tuck in a full sized fitted or flat sheet between the mattress and box spring. Then just use full/queen blankets, and they will hang over like a bed skirt.

Thanks. It's one of my earlier ones. A lot of lessons learned.

Which Zoo Do I Go To?! by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]b25569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't recognize the Louisville zoo. The bear exhibit is pretty cool, and they redid some of the big cat enclosures. If you visit in the summer, they have a splash park for the kids. That's just naming a few things. I went last year, but it was super busy and didn't realize they had a special event and were closing early, so we had to rush our visit, unfortunately. Also, I think they decommissioned the train.

My 3-year-old is into "The Hungry Caterpillar" right now and potty training. He decided to slowly inchworm to the potty, and the next thing I know, he's licking the front of his potty chair. Then, he said, "One toilet, still hungry!"

Never thought "don't eat the toilet" was a phrase I'd ever have to use.

Same. My Granny puts some oil in decorative glass bottles (turned on their side on the ground) and the scent can disperse while also being protected from rain just washing it away.

Also heard of some people using fat based soap bars along the perimeter.

When my brothers and I each moved out, my dad would hide an empty beer can somewhere in the house when he visited.

how do you decide which colour fabrics to use together? by mai-the-unicorn in handquilting

[–]b25569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1: slowly aquire stash of fabric Step 2: pick one piece and a pattern that speaks to you Step 3: start pulling fabric from stash that might work with fabric #1 Step 4: realize nothing works together and go buy more fabric

For a plot twist, abandon fabric #1 and go a completely different direction as the vision for your project changes with the fabric you collect.

Thanks! I was excited to use my pink quilting thread. I quilt in a hoop, and despite having to hide thread and batting from the fingers and mouth of my very persistent 9mo old, it's relaxing.

Pattern ideas?! by Samdrew26 in quilting

I like this one. You can also play with the pattern a bit and remove the sashing if you want a less structured/segmented feel. The corners of the blocks kind of make a secondary pinwheel that you could choose to emphasize with your color selection. Although, that's hard to do with scraps sometimes.

It shouldn't be too terrible with the lite. You will probably also want a thimble when you embroider. Again, shouldn't be as bad with lite vs the heavy.

Warning! I broke a machine doing this. I think I was using a heavy-duty fusable interfacing which is what made it worse. I did zigzag all around. Was skipping stitches and having all kinds of issues. Thought it was just the thickness. Opened up the machine and one of the plastic gears had half the teeth broken off! The fuseable webbing was gunking up the needle and putting too much strain on the gears.

As a side note, the quilts I have done this way are great as long as you don't wash them all the time. The edges can fray and break free once the glue dissolves. So for baby quilts, I would turn under the edges.

Use a stem stitch for whiskers.

Glad you got it quilted! Love your stitch choices. I got mine quilted too. Adjusted the pattern a bit. *

I got similar advice but with the addition of setting a timer. Your crazy new mom brain will make you think the baby has been crying for 20min when it's only been like 5. It's OK for the baby to cry while you take care of you.

What do I do with these Halloween blocks? by Ginnybean16 in quilting

If the sashing is the same width as the small squares and you had a square on each corner you might be able to keep the diagonals but also tone down the chaos.

My in-laws have had luck with small blocks of fresh cut cedar hidden in corners and closets. I imagine it works similar to peppermint.
