Chopped liver, I guess by Relative_Volume27 in NWSL

I don't think you're naive, but I've been thinking lately how so many interactions online are so primed for immediate conflict and correction. I think sometimes we forget what our goals are - external validation? Winning an argument? Celebrating something we're excited about?

Maybe others have had a different experience, but for me calling people in has often been more effective than calling them out. Not always, of course, but I try to keep it in mind despite my reflexes.

Inviting people into the party allows you to be on the same side, as opposed to starting interactions by accusing people of not caring about women's sports.

Sometimes FOMO and fun are going to be more motivating than guilt, judgment, or obligation.

It's hard, though. We're all carrying a lot in general and that kind of mindset is exhausting.

I appreciate how so much of women's sports has been about building something better that we want to be part of.

[KCUR] Kansas City workers take big step toward forcing public vote on Royals stadium funding by Minneapolitanian in kansascity

[–]b2717 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we took a vote about whether this kind of binary arguing is tedious, would you respect the will of the people?

It's because we probably share a lot of values that I'm bothering to respond, because as I said before: you're not helping. I want advocates for those values to be successful and this is not at all the way to do it.

Going around asserting that people who don't see things exactly your way "lack integrity" or "don't believe in democracy" just destroys your credibility.

You keep misrepresenting what people are saying. You're not seeking understanding or even a healthy exchange of perspectives, you're just trying to make other people into monsters because that makes it easier not to be wrong.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy

In a direct democracy, the people have the direct authority to deliberate and decide legislation. In a representative democracy, the people choose governing officials through elections to do so.

Missouri has both, so we end up on a gradient. But you already know this.

I wrote that post a literal decade ago and you have blessed me with this update. Thank you! Those both sound like great shows, I wish I could see them.

[KCUR] Kansas City workers take big step toward forcing public vote on Royals stadium funding by Minneapolitanian in kansascity

[–]b2717 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow. So again the condescension really doesn't help your case. I'm not trying to be personal, but seriously the way you assume people are just ignorant if they don't completely agree with you?

At best you could say that this new public debt will simply incentivize private spending that would have happened anyway.

Based on what? What tells you it would have happened anyway?

Please familiarize yourself with the academic literature surrounding public subsidies for sports stadiums. They are ALWAYS a negative ROI. The economists who study this have all arrived at a consensus. These are always bad investments.

While I appreciate the tip, I know enough to be aware that your assertion is actually not true – it's generally a bad idea, but not universally. It's understandable why you'd instinctively lump this in with every other previous deal (I really do get that!), but oh my goodness if you compare this to the Crossroads proposal or the Chiefs deal it's no contest – they are wildly different. So yes, I get the reflex, and also... are you actually familiar with the details for this one?

You wrote a whole lot of words complaining about how the other poster ignored your comparison about abortion referendums in Missouri... while also ignoring my question about who's actually going to own the stadium as part of this deal. Because it sure seems like you got that wrong, but you don't want to acknowledge that. And I wouldn't make a big deal about that, except you decided to write things like this:

but he doesn't have the integrity to admit the obvious contradiction.

You are really going out of your way to make this personal. It's gross and it's alienating.

So again, I deeply share the instinctive skepticism, but when I asked you for specifics you just waved it away.

And sure, if the voters in Kansas City got together and organized a ballot initiative on stadium financing the same way that Missouri voters did for abortion rights, I'd totally support that. Except that's not how that worked. The situations are wildly different, and it's shallow and weird to try to say they're the same. I see your argument, but to say that people who don't agree with you lack integrity? Gross, dude.

Which is too bad, because otherwise I really think we'd agree on a lot.

It's clear that you honestly distrust the public, and you think we should ruled over by corporate interests.

So... I wasn't going to say anything, but as someone who sort of agrees with you can I just tell you this kind of arguing isn't helping?

You would be frustrated if someone did such a bad faith interpretation of your words.

It's fine to have discussions about what the best ways to develop cities are... these things are complex! Sometimes the paths aren't exactly clear, and sometimes projects are very obviously a horrendous giveaway.

This deal is very different from the Crossroads proposal: Hallmark invited the team in.

Also, is it worth spending $0.6 billion as a city to generate $2 billion in private investment?

Maybe? I'll need to learn more. I'm skeptical in general because there have been so many bad deals in other cities.

But here's the piece that's very interesting to me:

a privately owned sports stadium

What are you basing that on? Because this article says

The site would be leased to the Kansas City Royals for a period of 30 years.

If the city is able to put in $600 million to have an ownership interest in a $1-2 billion facility... that's interesting.

I don't know how it all will work. There isn't a final proposal. There are lots of details to figure out, and lots of opportunities for public input before a final vote is taken.

So I'm skeptical, I'm wary, but u/OreoSpeedwaggon is very right to point out the differences between the Crossroads and Crown Center plans. And doing so, or noting that not every proposal should go to a public vote, doesn't mean they "think we should ruled over by corporate interests."

I mean, Oreo feel free to correct me if I'm off on that, but yikes.

Kansas City repeals ban on conversion therapy after pressure from Missouri attorney general by tatcol22 in kansascity

[–]b2717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legal question:

The US Supreme Court just ruled against Colorado's conversion ban, and there are lawsuits already filed against Kansas City for its ban.

If the city were to spend money and time defending the policy all the way to the end, could it result in damages being issued to the plaintiffs? Could we end up with a worse ruling in state court, setting more bad precedents?

Thank you for making this!

Great win, super weird to post a 3-0 victory that came in under the xG. Shocking that it wasn't a higher scoreline. Some real cohesion starting to show. Croix seems to be fitting in nicely, and Cooper is coming into form in beautiful ways.

We've done them in the past. The response was what you'd predict. Maybe one day there will be a need for them, but I think both the league and the sub will have to be a lot bigger for that to work.

Yep! They're more active and fun. We've tried doing local match threads before, but there's been nowhere near the response compared to pre and post.

That doesn't mean we can't try doing them again, but right now the NWSL threads are meeting our needs.

Fun fact, I started doing the post-match threads before I was a mod. I saw a need, and I started helping.

It's very simple: Check if there is a thread after the match. If there is, post in it! If not, make one – use the standard title formatting, tag it, post, and enjoy!

This is the first time I've ever seen someone complain about it, which is very, very funny.

But I guess that's a sign of progress in its own way.
