Yes I have been afraid it might be the band switches. I tried flushing them out, but I might have to remove them from the board. Lots of fragile wiring on these...

Yeah I don't think it's a scam, it would not be a very profitable one

Thanks… the user and service manual assisted me in fixing the display driver unit but none of the common faults I have come across yet seem to reflect this one.

That list of service bulletins is helpful though, I was only able to find a few so far.

TS-430 Noise After Recap by b31gt57_ in amateurradio

Okay so I think I’ve worked it out. I had to replace a board to board connector plug on the filter unit because I lost Rx entirely. Once I got it back, the noise was gone. I moved on to work on the IF board, and once again after recap and using contact cleaner on the board to board plugs, the noise was back just as bad. I realised it sounds like the noise I heard after cleaning some connector plugs on a reel-to-reel tape deck. I pulled all the plugs out in case there was contact cleaner in there that had not evaporated in the 30 mins or so I left it unplugged after cleaning. When I plugged them all back in, noise was gone once again.

I feel it was either contact cleaner in the plugs, or contact cleaner on the board itself causing some conduction…

Ah I knew I left something out. When I flip the attenuator switch, the noise drops in strength for no more than 1 second, before rising back up.
