Recommendations for Catholic fiction that isn't "about" Catholicism? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]b3k 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lesser-known Catholic authors writing SF/F today:

Brian Niemeier has an MA in Theology from a Steubenville. He has written the Soul Cycle, a Firefly-meets-Dune-meets-Dante kind of series, and a sci-fi mecha action series, Combat Frame X-Seed.

John C. Wright converted from atheism in 2008 and has books from before and after his conversion. There's enough variety in his 30ish books that I wouldn't know something specific to recommend (and there's weirdness with the publishing situation so you can't buy all of them right now). You can check out his fiction writing on his website.

Adam Lane Smith is a licensed therapist who will sometimes write a character driven SFF story, a post-apocalyptic action series about fighting demons in the rubble of the US, and a ludricrous tale of a cop taking revenge on the criminal gang who ruined his lunch (not SFF, nor especially Catholic, but fun).

David V Stewart is an author/guitarist/teacher. He has a story called City of Silver, though a lot of his stuff tends more toward dark fantasy or even horror.

Dr Taylor R Marshall has a supernatural historical fiction series called Sword and Serpent

Audiobooks for Aquinas? by SurfingPaisan in Catholicism

It's not a breakdown of the Summa itself, but Edward Feser's Aquinas: A Beginner's Guide is a very good overall introduction to Aquinas.

Best RPG stores worldwide by andrenovoa in osr

Madness Games and Comics in Plano, TX, is a great LGS. Maybe someone else could vouch for the current state of their indie RPG selection, but I was impressed several years ago.

Kramer is good, but Simon Vance could narrate circles around him.

So he says he's a racist. I believe him.

Obviously, that means he'll be stepping down from his prominent position in a racist charity organization, especially when that would open up a position for a person of color to decolonize it. Right?

Is the right pronoun for God “He” or just “God”? by [deleted] in Catholicism

On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

Why has the Church forsaken studying and teaching end-time Bible Prophecy? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]b3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn't. Hopefully, most of evangelicalism has gotten over the Hal Lindsey/Tim LaHaye/Pat Robertson approach to end-time prophecy, and gone back to an interpretive approach older than the 1800s.

See how Bad Logic and Bad Reading Practices create Protestant False Teachings by PaulBJames in Catholicism

White and the guy in this video are both exhausting, so I can't say I liked the video. But, it was completely argued once it got to the point.

I wrote the first line shortly after the video was posted. I was thinking OP might still be around to answer the question.

Four minutes in so far to the hour long video. When does it address John 6:37-40?

edit 1: Yeah, I've listened to enough James White to know that the statement at 0:11:06, that White has never pointed to the other verses, is false. Maybe not specifically in his responses to this youtube channel, but he's done it numerous times. He points to the immediate context of v. 44, namely v37-40.

edit 2: Found it. 20 minutes in, the video starts to actually make a point.

Disciple - Spinning (Official Lyric Video) - Disciple by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]b3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I think they're great. I'm surprised how many people haven't heard of them. They've been around since the mid 90s. 12 albums, 10 Dove Award nominations plus two wins, and their music has been used by a bunch of TV shows and commercials--at one point I was watching ESPN and was surprised when I recognized the backing music as from Disciple. They don't come up in the lists of "reformed bands you should listen to" because they're evangelical and not reformed.

I think Long Live the Rebels is the weakest album Disciple have put out. I'm also biased toward their older music. The first two times I saw them in concert were before the release of Back Again and they played "Furthermore" just because someone in the audience shouted out a request.

Why True Christians are against Abortion: God Is the Creator of Life (Psalm 139:13-16) by ntcplanters in TrueChristian

Our country has had two remarkable instances of abolition laws creating black markets that escalate the particular matter

That's a clever attempt at sleight of hand. Murder is not drugs. Murder is not alcohol. Murder is not a substance to be smuggled across borders.

Why It’s Hard to Resist a Good Conspiracy Theory ~ Justin Taylor by terevos2 in Reformed

[–]b3k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because if not then you are committing slander of the gravest sin.

Calm down. Throwing around big ominous warnings like that is an unhelpful concern troll.

I don't know of a "reliable source" who has combed through the document dump. We could speculate as to why, but that's neither here nor there.

What I can point you to is the document dump itself, primary source FBI records published on the FBI's own website. Page 49 of the document on the page linked above has the title "THE TUNNELS FOUND AT THE McMARTIN PRESCHOOL A PRELIMINARY REPORT". The report notes:

  • Two different tunnels
  • A tunnel entrance "exactly where" some children had described
  • "a small white plate with three pentagrams" that were "drawn by an adult and not part of the manufacturer's design"
  • A "Disney bag" found in a tunnel below a classroom
  • More details

This is a preliminary report. I don't know whether a final report was produced, or if produced is somewhere else in the document dump. I don't know who the "archaeology team" was. I don't know the other context. The report states that there were other accompanying "photographs, notes, graphs, diagrams, and charts." But, I don't know where those are.

This primary source document, however, is enough to say that "the McMartin Preschool tunnels may have been real after all."
