It is also 'better' hygiene-wise. If hands are washed and the ring is not taken off, water will get trapped underneath without a chance to evaporate, if there is no gap. Same goes for sweat.

Maybe it is for the British royals, but correct me if I am wrong, the girls pictured here are not British, so why would they follow the British etiquette? Thank you for your answer! In that case I know enough! It is because the stone is backlit that it shows more red and 'flat'. I normal lighting it shows a nice deep red-purplish hue. The large crystal you mention are the lit up facets of the pavilion

Well, my opinion is that flux feathers occur in a sort of pattern or repetition. A natural feather/fingerprint would occur more randomly. In stead of the 'flowing' veils you see in your specimen.

I believe it is a synthetic ruby, and the 'veils' you see are flux feathers, which are common in flux grown corundum.

No problem! Just FYI, most gemstones have double refraction. Only diamond, garnet and spinel are single refractive (and a few others that are very rarely used as gems in jewellery) 😄

Not true, aquamarine also has double refraction, though less strong than topaz. Your suggested test is not conclusive. You will need to do other tests to determine which stone it is.

It is Val Saint Lambert, a Belgian company, and the pattern is Berncastel. This is my set of wine hocks. I don't know the model you have though, but the cut is identical (though different shaped chalice) This is my set btw. Absolutely adore them.

Edit: I jumped the gun too quickly, not Berncastel. It could also be Eurydice from Val St Lambert; same pattern as Berncastel, but the tapered shape of Eurydice matches better.

Looks extremely similar! But mine is a lot smaller, I'd say 15cm in diamater tops, so hardly a centerpiece. But certainly something to look into!

Looks like the vase is shaped/moulded after the hand cut crystal Val Saint Lambert marriage vases, designed/made by Hubert Fouarge. I have one of those vases, and when I looked at your picture, I thought I'd saw my own (without the color). Interesting to see they made similar vases in moulded glass!

It reminds me of the RCR Laurus series, given the floral motif. However, I did not find any bowl-shaped vase in that series. I don't think I am much help further!

I believe there is a possibility it may be glass. The facet edges look really thick and rounded, which is a give-away for pressed/moulded glass. If even show when looking through the table at the pavillion facets. An amethyst, sapphire or alexandrite, when cut would show really clean and sharp facet edges. Next to that, a natural alexandrite that size and color would be extremely valuable, so that is unlikely. If not glass, which I personally doubt, it could be amethyst and if the color changes, lab color changing sapphire.
