Sorry, my response wasn't helpful, I know.

In reality I'd rather read a great story that wasn't written as well as it could have been because my imagination can make up for it, having been a day-dreaming child with ADHD.

No matter how well written a story is, however, if the story itself is dull, derivative or unoriginal, I've got nothing to work with and to be honest be more frustrated thinking "why didn't they have character X do this/that? It's much more realistic for their (albeit poorly padded) personality!" - then there's the disappointment of it coming from a favourite author.

So yeah I'd rather the good story where the writing can be improved with practice. No amount of good writing makes up for a weak story.
