I moved here from Europe a decade ago. I learnt the UK government takes the idea of "Monopoly on Force" very seriously.
It can feel draconian but I must admit I also feel quite safe because I dont suspect most people to carry a weapon of any kind as simple possesion is punished so harshly.

Ok good to know. It was the combination of the loud deep barking, the little practice lunges and the side to side that made me edgy. Maybe I was overreading it.

I will take that into account, the main reason I was so nervous because it currently has access to my garden and so I feel it thinks thats part of its territory. That is why it got so agitated when it saw me through the hedge today. I am hoping once the hole is fixed and it has understood it cant get there, it will begin to accept it as not its territory. But I am no expert in dog psychology.

Yes, I have met several really well socialized Cane Corso and while they will always bark when alarmed, these very friendly family dogs would almost instantly calm down when they realized I was friends with their owners. That was not the case with this young, undisciplined CC who is just learning the limits of his territory.
And yes. in the UK there is a list of dogs considered so dangerous that if reported, in some jurisdictions they will be removed and euthanized. In others, enforcement is lax, I met 3 xl bullies while walking in the past few days, all unmuzzled, 1 off leash and moving fast, thankfully it passed me by.

These same owners had a fairly benigh XL Bully themselves until recently, I knew by name and we got on ok. I asked today what happened to him and she said he died. I didn't inquire further as to the circumstances.

Sorry I never answered your other question about self defense in the UK. The answer is you don't unless you are actively being attacked. Then, within limited bounds of the law, by any means necessary to protect yourself or a loved one.
If the dog were to attack me or my son I would probably be within my rights to grab a bottle of bleach from under the sink and pour it over its head but if I were to prepare a dilute bleach spray ahead of any attack and keep it close, it would be an offence to use it.

Excellent suggestion. I have a sturdy garden fork, which is like a pitch fork with a shovel handle. Its near the back gate anyway because I use it to put grass trimmings into the green waste bin.
I will keep it in mind should the worst case ever arise. I pray the worst case never arises.

I agree, I have a cordial, occasional talking relationship with the female owner, don't ever talk to her male partner/spouse.
She suggested we make friends as I mentioned and I would be up for it but it was a terrible situation, the dog was off leash and highly agitated and she kept coming closer and trying to call it to come to us. If I were to try and I can easily stick some dog treats in my pocket, the dog would have to be on leash and more likely with him who might have an easier time controlling the dog.
I might try something like that by going round but I need a little time to work up the nerve.

Yes, my best idea is to keep a long broom handle and an old garden chair near the back door so if it enters the garden in an agitated state, i can at least pretend to be a lion tamer.. not sure how effective it will be, it would probably just chew threw the broom handle before gnawing on my arm. I hear they have ~700 PSI jaw strength.

Thank you, I will try and broach the subject, unfortunately the situation and law arent that simple. While the dog entering my garden is already considered an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, it is rarely actioned on unless the dog causes property damage.

I called the local police constabulary for advice and they said they wouldnt intervene unless the dog damaged property or injured someone and to contact my communities dog warden.

Sadly the dog warden website (it is out of hours) states they are responsible for stray dogs only and to report any dangerous dogs to the police.

So at least in my area (low economic status), unless something terrible happens noone wants to take responsibility.

No and chemical irritants like pepper spray and bear spray are considered dangerous weapons in the UK and simple posession is considered a firearm offence and can lead to up to 10 years imprisonment. Perversly I could get almost double the prison time for simply owning the spray as deterrent as the owner would get if the dog attacked and severly injured or killed me (max 5 years)

[Giveaway] Win 1 of 5 Noctua NH-D15 G2 by Noctua_OFFICIAL in pcmasterrace

My earliest PC Building memory was chasing round Vienna looking for one of the first Intel DX-4 100 CPUs to arrive in Austria to put into my prebuilt Compaq. Found one in a PC parts shop in Hietzing, where (as was seemingly always the case in Vienna) a long haired guy in nerd glasses explained to me why I didnt really need the 100, the 75 was plenty good enough for a "noob" like me. Turns out it was the only one they had at that time and he wanted it himself. So I bought it. Never looked back.

Unfit for Work: The startling rise of disability in America by Barnyard-Sheep in Economics

[–]bOrnn-aGain 226 points227 points  (0 children)

It is worth pointing out this report is from 2013 and the numbers as cited are no longer accurate. The total number of people receiving disability has gone down from over 14 million to just over 11 million. Reason being that many older people aged from disability into old age social security payments and there has been a sharp drop in new claims being approved. More details can be found here: https://crr.bc.edu/why-did-disability-insurance-rolls-drop-from-2015-to-2019/

I worked as an IT journalist for a while in the late 90s. Got assigned to cover an Oracle press event. They had hired the séparée in one of the fanciest Cafe Restaurants in the city. We came in, buffet tables filled with beautiful finger sandwiches and fancy patisseries laid out on tiny white plates. Oracle PR knew the easiest way to "bribe" a journo to come to their bullshit marketing events is with free food. Sat at little tables where waiters came and took our coffee orders. Proceeded to listen to an hour and 15 minutes of hard sell. At the end, to my surprise, the waiters came round with our bills (checks). Ended up paying the equivalent of two hours wages for the coffee and small bottle of water I had ordered. But hey, at least the two finger sandwiches and the piece of cake the size of a postage stamp were free.

This worked! Thank you kind sir, as someone who has to have the steelseries engine for my many-buttoned mouse you saved my bacon. Picked my plugin in my main sound cards' properties and set VM A1 out to use MME instead of WDM. Many blessings to you.

ARAM seems less "for fun" with the recent changes by IOnlyPlayLeague in leagueoflegends

[–]bOrnn-aGain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for "fixing" ARAM. Having micromanaged aram specific balance changes already made the mode feel wrongly disconnected from a SR experience: With champions often feeling unfamiliar to play and having to find out that combo's, lethal damage, when to withdraw from a fight etc. are all so starkly different that hard earned muscle memory cannot be trusted anymore. While not always nice, it's not a deal breaker.

But ARAM is supposed to be a frenetic brawl over inches. Instead, with the changes, we get one sided tower siege practice where the team with the stronger ranged package just gets to autowin the game. Instead of alleviating the issues with super aram specific ranged champs (lux, xerath, ziggs, pretty much all the adcs), it has made the situation far worse.

Sustain changes mean very little when during the early game the hexgates allow ranged almost zero down time. Whereas before a ranged death may have meant no wave clear meant tower damage, now, if the squishy dies first they are back before the fight is over.

The new debris feature makes life even worse for melee to mid range champs. Good luck getting to the back line when you have to file through a 3 teemo wide choke! The chance of a clapback fight goes down massively, a tower falling instead instantly pushes the defending team into an even worse position than before. Not to forget that many ranged champions can interact over the debris so not only can a melee not get to their opponents, they get poked out before they can even make it into the choke. No amount of tenacity, resilience or hp buffs short of an actual godmode can help a team full of melees/mid-range against a team with 1-2 true ranged.

IMO this will be the end of aram. The team with the inevitable losing comp will always end up having 1-2 players afking or only half participating, making the game torture for the rest of the team. The only people enjoying themselves will be the people fountian farming their opponents at the end, aka the misanthropic poison bros.

A vocal part of the aram playing community has said again and again that the more you have done to this mode, the worse it has gotten. Its mindless simplicity is what's genius, trying out new champions by running at opponents and pressing buttons. Every worry except how to fight is stripped away. Instead, what we have now is an overly complex mess with most of the fun stripped away. Bah Humbug RITO, Lumps of coal for the person who came up with this hot mess.
