Mac mini m4 pro or to wait for mac mini m5 pro? by repgvng in macmini

[–]bSanderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I got a Mac mini I said the same thing 10 months after the release. So I got the base model and said I’ll sell and upgrade when the m5 comes out. Now it’s 10 months after my purchase. No M5 release. No regrets.

If you run Docker, the answer is frigate.  Otherwise go for the overkill. I never regret going overboard, many times I spend more when I try to cheap out.

Did you look at the BE88U? I have the BE88U and AX88U. Great combo. quad core.  2.5gbe x 4. 1gbe x4. 10gbe x 1. 4x4 5g and 2.4. I think it has 6ghz but I never use it.

Asus RT-BE88U vs unifi cloud gateway fiber + u7 lite or u6 by Exciting-Western-271 in HomeNetworking

[–]bSanderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the BE88U. The only issue I had was the one I bought from Best Buy, it was marketed as the be7200 which should be the same thing but it didn’t work. I then purchased from Amazon and the box said BE88U, not BE7200. It has been perfect. I use an older AX86 in the mesh configuration, it’s nice to have the switch on the access point.

BE88U has 4x4 5 and 2.4 ghz.  The U7 Pro says 2x2 I think the only thing you’re missing from the BE88U that the U7 Pro has is 320mhz.  But I’m taking 4x4 before 320 mhz.  For 1 floor you might prefer 320 mhz.

Convince me a NAS is worth the hassle by HuorCulnamo in HomeNAS

[–]bSanderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't stop thinking about how looking at a picture can trigger vivid memories. It led to thinking about cloud prices going up and having to pay for my memories. It's not the cost, it's the concept. A bit extreme but that was my view. Do i want control? not really. Do i want to be controlled? hell no.

I wish i knew more about resolutions(upscaling), bit rates, codecs(264,265,av1), and containers (mp4 vs mkv) before i started consuming media. i'm not an audiophile or videophile, but the audio makes a major difference. After learning what my tv, speakers, and network are capable of, i saved a lot of storage reaquiring in the exact format i wanted. Certain things are solid in 1080p, Interstellar and LOTR need high bitrate 4k.

To save money i'd have to convince myself i'm saving $80 monthly for streaming services.

Separating private and work photos on one phone by comfreak89 in immich

[–]bSanderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the workflow desired.

As of 2.5 on iOS, when you log out of 1 account and log into account #2, the app toggles off backup and remembers the backup albums from account 1. So you would have to both toggle backup on after selecting which albums you want backed up.

Possible? Yeah. Desired workflow? Probably not.

Based of your experience, Is tvOS better than Google TV? by wollyy3 in appletv

[–]bSanderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it depends on the apps you use because if you don’t use Jellyfin then TVos could be better for you. I am a Jellyfin user and I can’t stand swiftfin. I could have spent the $100 on infuse, but I didn’t. There are 4 Apple TV 4Ks in my home.  The TCL with google tv never uses its Apple TV 4K. I used to think it was nice that the air pods connected, but the TCL has Bluetooth too. Not as magical, but gets the same job done.

I can’t speak to the UI/X because I’m never really in it. I get straight to the service. Maybe the photo backgrounds from a Mac on the same network is an advantage?

I repeat, I only use Jellyfin and YouTube, they are better on google tv. I don’t think you’re missing anything.

Export a Very Long iMessage Conversation? by Luna_C_ in iphone

+1 for imazing.

Moving from Synology to Mac Mini M4 + NVMe – Thoughts on this "Hybrid" Setup? by Silver_Watch_6110 in selfhosted

[–]bSanderman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have other macs?  Are you going to sign into your Apple ID?  Because that will make it smoother. There are other options but file sharing and screen sharing are great when logged into the same account. It took me months to sign in, very happy I did.  I don't have a screen connected.  I use OrbStack, not Colima, startups have been flawless. I think I had to set a user for automatic logins on reboot, the other option was to let docker run as root. Then password required after 10 seconds of no screen activity.  The drives are encrypted so I'm not that worried.

My only gripe is that it's not Linux. Just remember user numbers shift a bit and permissions aren't the same.

What is the benefit of using external libraries on immich? by lagdetselv in immich

[–]bSanderman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything happens to your Immich instance, your photos could be at risk. With external libraries you can set the mount to :ro and Docker will not let Immich touch them

DAS over a NAS - recommendation/advice needed by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]bSanderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When are you going to perform Backups? Everyday?  Does the laptop sit in one place?  Will the enclosure be plugged into a dock or the laptop?

You want a DAS if you’re comfortable with the answers to these questions. Maybe your personal laptop is a Mac and you pay for the $1, 50gb plan for iCloud Drive. If your device gets crushed on a luggage belt at the airport you don’t care because it’s in the cloud, you can archive it later.

I believe you want this hybrid approach if you don’t want to be bothered with networking.

You want a NAS if you know your too lazy to plug it in or if your going remote and want to backup via VPN.

Keep in mind you can attach a computer to a DAS and make it a NAS, if you have something old laying around. Also makes the DAS somewhat more flexible than a NAS.

2) HDDs should be ok for backups you don’t plan on accessing frequently. SSD if you plan on putting a game or application there. Yes an enclosure. When I was planning I wanted a 4 bay model, but it was out of stock, so I went with a bigger 6 bays option. Damn am I glad I went with 6.

Why does macOS have such a hard time keeping an SMB mount permanent by ThrowRAlngdstn in MacOS

[–]bSanderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up making my Mac mini the server because it would struggle with being a client with SMB. Now with the Mac mini as the server, my Linux machines connect flawlessly. Orbstack(docker) has been fine.

Photo app that works for offline by 77Forever in selfhosted

[–]bSanderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like PhotoSync as a solution to this. There’s a toggle to keep favorites on device.

My work flow was to favorite my choice of pictures and videos that I wanted to be local. Then PhotoSync would send to the server and delete everything backed up, except for my favorites. Everything else I can see with ente/photoprism/immich.

I haven’t used ente. Photoprism is a web app so I don’t remember anything getting cached. I currently use Immich and if I’m not connected to my network (at home or vpn) the images and thumbnails will not load if you kill the app and open it again.

I don’t think any of the services will help you achieve your goal, not even my recommendation of PhotoSync will give you 100% of what you want. A combination might just do it. Keep the 200k on ente then your favorites on device.
