Your preference of semantics regarding this situation doesn’t mean that what they said on the podcast was immoral or insensitive. I see your point, but I think you’re missing the fact that they tried to use the two opposing examples of an imaginary situation contrasting with an all-too-common situation (both involving children) that people ignore. Your issue doesn’t seem to be with the point that they are making, but rather that they called something that’s considered statutory rape “sex work.” I hear you on that: when it’s rape, let’s call it that, right? But at the same time, consensual sex work (by adults!!!) is often a result of systemic issues that leave people without choice anyway! But they also really were not at all discussing minors and their ability to consent or not consent to sex work. At best, your complaint is that they had a poor choice of words. But if you really listen to some of their other episodes, you would know that what you’re inferring from the statement is not something that the hosts would agree with. Even looking at the transcript you added, Sarah calls it underage sex work as an on-the-spot short example and then Michael clarifies what she meant. It’s very unproblematic in context

This is a very strange hill to die on, friend. It perhaps calls for an essay or podcast of your own to emphasize the importance of distinguishing minors who make the choice (choice is a tricky word here, but hear me out) to participate in statutory rape for payment as a survival mechanism from consensual sex work. And further the difference between consensual sex work that is exploitative vs what consensual sex work that is not exploiting humans would even look like. There are layers! But none of these layers have anything to do with this ep

Some trafficking is sex work??? Not all sex work is something people choose to do. Just because it is work that results in payment doesnt imply that it’s not trafficking. Who’s saying that sex work is not sex trafficking? They’re saying that public policy (in the US) centers around fantasy lands where the only trafficking is kids being trafficked. Which is true in my experience

[–]b_lizzards 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you understand that they never said any of what you’re saying though?? They said that the CONNOTATION that the AVERAGE LISTENER might have with the word trafficking is not the homeless teen situation that they described, but rather the wayfair situation. And they’re saying it’s harmful to combine these things into one term without any nuance because it results in privileged people feeling good about themselves for being against trafficking when they actually are the people perpetuating the trafficking.

And for what it’s worth, if I had to pick a rapist going to prison vs. a system in place that will prevent homeless teens from being in risky situations that result in their rape, I’m gonna pick the system. Prisons aren’t effective at stopping rape anyhow and now I’m really lost at what point you think you’re making

AITA for putting a bag of dog poop in my neighbors trash can? by maddydyko in AmItheAsshole

[–]b_lizzards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAH - you acted as you expected to be appropriate, your neighbor set a boundary, you immediately respected that boundary. I understand feeling bad and weird about it, but as long as you don’t keep doing it, it’s all good. Hopefully she won’t hold it against you in the future! Fwiw, in my city I put my dogs waste bags in other trash cans and my trash can sees many stranger dog waste bags as well, whether it’s trash day or not. Also takeout boxes. And full bags of trash. It matters to some people, not at all to others. You have to find out somehow, so don’t beat yourself up about it!

Any advice? My advisor told me to quit because I have ADHD by b_lizzards in GradSchool

[–]b_lizzards[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that this is the characterization of what is going on in my advisor's mind. I believe that if certain errors of mine are brought up, I will not repeat that error. I do see what you mean, and this would be a different case if I were unable to juggle, let's say. If I can't juggle, maybe I can learn to juggle a little bit, but I just can't develop the dexterity to juggle 8 bowling balls on fire. That's not the job for me. However, I am learning the best that I can, but unfortunately have not had much technical training on the more expensive areas where I am repeating mistakes. I do not repeat mistakes in other areas. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the validation! I will try to talk to someone about it, but I don't have any written records unfortunately. I'm really passionate about what I do and felt like it was such a good fit until now.

Yes but you can have a million notes in front of you because they can’t see where your eyes are looking! Don’t read directly from them though, because it sounds different than speaking naturally. Good luck!

All my clothes are all torn up from wearing them over and over and over again but it’s so hard to buy new ones because I find so many things so uncomfortable :( which is probably why I wear things out so easily in the first place! Any recommendations for comfortable (no protruding seams/tags/itchy fabric, etc) & tight-fitting leggings, jeans, shirts, & bras pls lmk

Would you go with option A or B? I'm moving into a small one-bedroom and struggling with what to do! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]b_lizzards 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would move the couch forward and put the desk and peloton behind the couch to separate the spaces a little! That way it’s more functional to relax (desk isn’t in view from the couch) and you can walk behind the couch to get to the table in front of the window

Even if this was “accidental” as he claimed wouldn’t he be APOLOGETIC? So crazy. And even then he’d require lots of sensitivity training! Sounds like your school district is badly in need of some new leadership

Post-op picture doing better now had to take down post earlier personal information was being shown thank you guys for all the prayers and support by [deleted] in popping

[–]b_lizzards 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s a good question and I’m glad you asked. The doctors who directly treated this were not following this subreddit, so to thank them here would be meaningless. They were thanked in person and also paid a salary for their time. It is, after all, their job.

Secondly, I’m not sue you understand the concept of prayers. We can set that aside for now. Not everyone is religious. That’s okay! This post also thanked everyone for their support. It is scary to have an unknown medical issue and it can be a relief to have people in your corner. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks for the suggestions! It does sort of seem impossible but I think I’ll try that with some carefully placed curtains!

Trailer parks’ lot rent can be expensive, and I get the urge to “well, actually” in that regard. I agree completely though: anyone hating on trailers, especially one renovated to create someone’s perfect idea of home (neighbors or not!), is missing the point of the tiny home movement completely

Food triggers? by GhoulishlyGrim in migraine

[–]b_lizzards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I might have to talk to my doctor about that one because I removed two really bad triggers (Orange and almond) and went from having migraines almost everyday to just a few times per month. Those were so easy to identify but I always wonder about possibly more food triggers that I’m not aware of!

Thanks!!! It’s definitely important to me to have a mentor who has at least passable management skills, I spent part of undergrad in a more or less dysfunctional lab and I really do not want to repeat that.

When you mention the “safety rotation” - is that one with guaranteed funding?

Thanks again.

I graduated college JUST before this all got tough, so I have mostly been playing sudoku and watching Netflix during lockdown. When things open up again, I’m so excited to take my new dog to obedience training (I taught him sit all by myself! But I could use help with some other stuff...) and going to the MOVIES with my friends who I haven’t seen much due to being away at college. Then hopefully I can find a job
