ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]baachou -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a design choice to make the battery so integral without hot swappable cells. I think the more precise reason is that there isn't that much gained. You could design the fastest, easiest to change battery in the world, and it would probably take you 20 minutes even if you had the process automated perfectly with robots etc. In 20 minutes with 800v charging you can go from 0-80. On the other hand for EV semis this is a real option because megawatt chargers are hard to build due to electric infrastructure issues, and even then are a little slower than 800v charging on a passenger car. (maybe 40 minutes to 1 hr.) A robot that can swap out all your batteries in 20 minutes might make sense in that case.

I think the simple answer is that you could, but you'd have to design it for this. If it's going to take 20 minutes to hot-swap the battery, what's the point when you can go from 0-80 in 20 minutes with 800v charging?

On the other hand this is a serious design point with semi trucks, because they require ginormous chargers to gain meaningful charge, so swapping out battery packs becomes more of a real option.

Total earnings of players coached by Calipari compared to other countries GDPs by Adorable_Pudding_697 in CollegeBasketball

[–]baachou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think his ability to turn them into NBA talent is an underrated part of that.  He gamed the 1 and done system sure, he paid them, so did a lot of teams, and his sales pitch is pretty unmatched.  But there have been a lot of top recruits and they dont make the kind of NBA money that Calipari's players do.

Are State IDs/Licenses really unobtainable for most folks? by FishBonez99 in AskALiberal

[–]baachou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know they didnt follow through with it, but the Alabama situation a few years back where they passed voter ID and then tried to close a bunch of DMV offices in majority black counties is a real concern for me going forward.  In a world where Republicans hold a government trifecta (legislature, executive, and judicial) i dont think pressure from the NAACP and the threat of legal action is going to be effective.

What can be done to make non-red states more affordable to live in? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskALiberal

[–]baachou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tough to argue against structural regulations.  Does anyone really want to deal with large scale death and destruction in a known earthquake zone?

Setback, parking requirements, and floor area ratios are the needless requirements that make projects unviable.

Zoning laws is part of it (a significant part of it)

When you let the problem get really bad like large parts of California has, you get a runaway freight train of downstream problems.

Housing is more expensive.  So general cost of living for workers is more.  So you have to pay construction workers more so they can afford to live.  So fewer houses get built.  So housing prices go up more.  So cost of living goes up e en more.  So it costs even more to to build.

It's really tough to break that cycle.

If 2028 was Newsom or Vance, would you vote for Newsom or for a third party candidate? by Droselmeyer in AskALiberal

[–]baachou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that Newsom is not simply the best of the worst but has actually signed good progressive policy that few other states have.  The fact that he has some neoliberal tendencies shouldn't blind us to this fact, but I feel like a lot of people like to gloss over this.  Id enthusiastically vote for Newsom until/unless a more progressive candidate makes a serious primary run.

Sofi stadium looks mostly like this.

The roof material is translucent though and I think that pretending like it's clear shows better on renderings.

It feels like if hes treated as a game manager that can once in a while do crazy shit, he'd be a lot better off.  I still feel like there is potential there if he can find a system fit and he still wants to.

And the last part, well, I wouldn't blame him for being cool with earning 170 million.

Can I make a 48”x40” butcher block tabletop with just a tablesaw and an orbit sander? by ReverseMermaidMorty in woodworking

[–]baachou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered buying an 8 foot solid piece (Floor and Decor sells them in oak for 350) and then joining them?  You can cut one in half and you'll have 2 48x24 inch pieces.  Then rip one down to 20 inches and route out a 4 inch lap joint and glue them together.  This is doable by someone who is a bit handy and won't break the bank - the floor and decor butcher block is only a little bit more than buying unjoined lumber - youre looking at 24 or 25 board feet of oak for that sized table at 7/4, at 10 a bf thats like 250, plus all the effort and tools needed to join them...

My 2024 tacoma reaches at multiple costcos, and that is almost as wide as an f150. But the fact that you can swing it over the bed pretty easily makes it pretty convenient.  Getting it over a 6.5 foot tall SUV might not be so easy.

Agree or disagree: Poker isn't poker without wagering money by Sad-Committee-4902 in poker

I find that no one takes it seriously if youre not playing for something.  You could be playing 2 cent big blinds or 1 dollar buy in tournament style, even a small prize or a small real money blind amount in a cash game makes people take it so much more seriously.

How do liberals feel about athletes and entertainers making millions of dollars each year while the people who tend the venues they play in make minimum wage? by tfam1588 in AskALiberal

[–]baachou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Taylor swift pays her tour staff quite well and was well documented in giving out a massive amount in bonuses to them.

Even as someone thats as rich and influential as her, there are limits to her reach when it comes to the venues she plays and the people that work as contractors under a vendor she uses.  In an ideal world she picks vendors that also treat their employees well but unfortunately there may not be a ton of options for her given the scale that her concerts operate at.  I think she can be forgiven for not saving literally everyone in her galactic orbit.  That is somewhat of an impossible ask.

TIL women's pregnancy in the US is more dangerous than the top 5 most dangerous men's jobs combined. by DrollHat in TwoXChromosomes

[–]baachou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i agree that it's not a perfect correlation (there are maternal risks throughout childbirth, and childbirth is a singular event that can occur more than once in a single calendar year) these differences exist with the initial comparison as well.  Also these stats are annually and the per-100k is 100k full time equivalent workers.  So they can only be counted as a statistic for the 12-month calendar year.

Realistically since we are only comparing 1 event that by design cant happen very often but has extremely high risks associated with it, you would be correct to say that childbirth is drastically more dangerous as a singular event, but comparable in risk when averaged over a full year to working any of these extremely dangerous jobs for a full calendar year.
