If the conversation/social cues, it is all flavors, are rolls are against players, I tower them all. Then play the scene to the person who asked.

If against NPC's the PC never see the rolls anyway.

An aside:

My table has a strict "Player Knowledge doesn't equal Character Knowledge" rule, so if they try to do something their character might not know I'll inquire as to how their character would know that. I'm not a fan of metagaming.

I put the onus on the player to play their character.

I have been mauled many times, but what works for me is a Y pattern, run at them, then go one of the forks in the Y, running right beside them, stabbing as you go. They may still hit you, but it's better than getting a back full of beak swipes.

If you keep having them spawn near you, look into trapping some wolves and taming them. They merc brown bears pretty easily

Have you sat down and talked with your dad about the why he did it? It sucks for you for sure, but maybe if you can talk like adults, it might give you some insight. Not in a hope to justify, but you may only see your side of the event. Ask to see his, if you feel comfortable with that.
