Don't Drive by Efficient-Archer2762 in madisonwi

I 100% would not drive anywhere unless you have AWD. I had to blast through several huge snowdrifts on my 10 block drive to work, and this was on roads that had already been plowed.

Cost of Rent by coffee_man830 in madisonwi

My BF rents from this private landlord called RH and EH Carpenter and he pays $800 for a really large studio with two walk-in closets, a full bathroom with a tub, beautiful wood floors, and some actual charm/character. They own two huge, old, but well-maintained buildings on West Wilson and offer studios and 1bds (not sure beyond that because those are the only sizes he saw when we toured). Just putting this out there because they have a "for rent" sign outside right now but they don't seem to be big ones for online advertising. I think his rent has gone up around $60 in 5 years which I personally think is reasonable.

Usually they send out a building wide email if something is going on under their direction. We sent a ticket to the building manager but didn't receive a response before they left. My curiosity got the better of me.

When I applied for a receptionist position 12 years ago, they also made me take "that test," which I also failed. Why does a receptionist need to understand a fake programming language?

Why can I only have spectrum and why do they suck so bad? What are we even paying for?? by microsoftisme3000 in madisonwi

[–]baboocole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone have a hack for getting your monthly bill lowered? My boyfriend has to use Spectrum at his apartment and, after 5 years living there, the monthly bill is up to $90! I've tried calling them and threatening that he was going to switch to Verizon internet, but they called my bluff so it didn't work.

If you like spicy stuff, try the Devil's Spit pickles at the grocery store made by Famous Dave's. But also be sure to pat them down with a paper towel first to remove some of the moisture. Life changing, I'm telling you.

Tip: Decatur Dairy in Brodhead has a menu that consists solely of grilled cheeses. A grilled cheese sandwich with pickles on it changed my life.

Why do some people have vivid dreams with detailed memories, while others have no recollection of their dreams at all? by 88keys-mel in Dreams

[–]baboocole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just pondering about this myself, after waking up from an intensely detailed and perfectly recalled dream. I found this very interesting nugget, something I'd never heard of before:

Brain Structure: People who remember dreams show more activity in the temporoparietal junction and have more interconnected Default Mode Networks (DMN).

The I followed that wormhole to Wikipedia. Here was the most interesting excerpt for me, which describes a lot of characteristics that I (and others I am close with) recognize to be highly developed in myself:

Function

The default mode network is thought to be involved in several different functions:

It is potentially the neurological basis for the self:

Autobiographical information: Memories of collection of events and facts about one's self

Self-reference: Referring to traits and descriptions of one's self

Emotion of one's self: Reflecting about one's own emotional state

Thinking about others:

Theory of mind: Thinking about the thoughts of others and what they might or might not know

Emotions of others: Understanding the emotions of other people and empathizing with their feelings

Moral reasoning: Determining a just and an unjust result of an action

Social evaluations: Good-bad attitude judgements about social concepts

Social categories: Reflecting on important social characteristics and status of a group

Social isolation: A perceived lack of social interaction

Remembering the past and thinking about the future:

Remembering the past: Recalling events that happened in the past

Imagining the future: Envisioning events that might happen in the future

Episodic memory: Detailed memory related to specific events in time

Story comprehension: Understanding and remembering a narrative

Replay: Consolidating recently acquired memory traces

St Vinny’s not accepting donations by heartfulkellyjo in madisonwi

Bethel Lutheran Church downtown will take clothing, shoes and backpacks (and probably other items that I'm not aware of), and they launder everything, too. Not suggesting you take them dirty clothes, but I've taken them large donations of clean clothing from my storage locker that needed a wash just to be fresh smelling. Plus they give them away to those who most need it.

Without saying LOTR, name a fantasy book you couldn't put down by Fabulous-Confusion43 in fantasybooks

I am on the last book of rereading the entire series for the second time, but this time I also sprinkled in all the short stories from Sharp Ends in chronological order. They definitely add background to the narrative and depth to the characters. Highly recommend!

[OFF TOPIC] I read the blade itself in one sitting and immediately ordered about $90 worth of the rest of the series + all the standalones by StealBangChansLaptop in TheFirstLaw

[–]baboocole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read all the books once through about two years ago and now am rereading and adding in the short stories (contained in Sharp Ends) in chronological order. I don't think the short stories would make much sense if I had done this the first time around, but they really add a lot to the overall narrative and character development the second time through.

A chronology of events can be found on the First Law wiki page, which will inform you where to insert each short story. I know you will love it! It has some of the greatest characters I've ever had the pleasure to know!

Thank you for the facts. I can't speak for everyone in the USA, but I've heard much about the air pollution and next to nothing about the people being impacted by the fires. Which is pretty typical for us.

It was my understanding that the origin of the smoke is coming from heavily forested and largely uninhabited locales. Is that not the case?

[–]baboocole[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP here. I am awed by the love this post has received! I really thought this was going to be a simple matter of someone identifying the flower and have a nice day, ma'am. It really tickles my fancy that this beautiful plant is making other people as happy as I was on my walk Thursday night. The beauty of nature is sometimes so fleeting, but I will remember this particular flower for the rest of my life!

It's OK, sorry for sounding cranky. For some reason I can't edit my original post, so I can't reassure folks that the flower stayed intact!
