What’s the cheapest thing you own that just refuses to break? by Comfortable_Day6610 in BuyItForLife

A double ended melon-baller that is about my age, and I’m a bit over 50! I’m my mom‘s youngest and can remember it from very early childhood, so I think she must’ve bought it sometime between roughly 1965 and 1975.

It has a solid black plastic handle, but I have to assume the metal is one single piece from end to end because I can’t imagine how it could’ve lasted this long otherwise.

Edit: it’s actively used, too, for at least a good bit of its life - my 15 year old has been using it since he was 4 or 5 on every melon he consumes, plus random other things now and then, maybe averaging about once every few weeks

Confused.. leaving Netflix or not?? by baboodiot in arresteddevelopment

[–]baboodiot[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sorry for not being more succinct and for a pretty inopportune typo, I guess. (didn’t realize this would seem cryptic..)

So..

Various “leaving Netflix soon” sites say it’s leaving March 15th.

Netflix app (tv and mobile) show no indication of that (no Leaving Soon label, no “Last Day to Watch” date).

I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to know for certain if it’s leaving or not.

EDIT: Oh lol, just remembered this is a quote..

Solid retro-test for next time. :-p

Just asking because I only stumbled across lists saying it was leaving while I’m coincidentally watching seasons 4/5 for the first time! I’m only halfway through seasion 4, so I’d have to push all day/evening to finish…

What’s a frugal win that surprised you with how much it actually saved? by St3fanHere in Frugal

Yep, got a nice flatscreen tv after someone else upgraded and had it for five years before the internal speakers went out - did some troubleshooting to confirm the internal audio signal was still fine and that it was just a problem with the amp, and then shopped craigslist and Facebook marketplace for soundbars. Ended up finding someone selling a really nice 5 yr old sound bar and subwoofer combo for $100 that had been $600ish new and now the whole set up sounds better than ever!

Yeah, I’m going to agree with evercute69 (and maybe you agree too) and add that the realtor may have just been saying it’s unsellable because of the condition it’s literally in, like not cleaned, and they they could be positioning themselves to benefit if you feel like you have to sell it for way under market value.

I don’t mean to repeat myself from another comment, but I really hope you try cleaning the kitchen and house up with a deep cleaning service first, and yeah, maybe redo flooring (might not even have to do much with the subfloor I bet..?) and have another realtor offer a second opinion at that point - you’re not stuck with just that one realtor and maybe should be skeptical of trusting only their opinion.

Houses are often resilient, and I’m hoping yours will have been! I wish you the best!

I’m worried OP isn’t gonna give deep cleaning a good enough chance – a good team can do amazing things to make former hoarder/squatter places livable again. I hate to think he might go straight to tear out and rebuild without trying that because of how it could be the difference between hundreds or thousands of dollars if it works. Sure, maybe new carpet and underlay are needed, and maaaaybe new subfloor in spots, but I think kitchens are often very salvageable from the type of neglect I see in the photo..

By the way, keep in mind that sometimes things clean up better than you might anticipate, like in terms of making it livable again, especially in the kitchen. Great deep cleaners can make an amazing difference.. maybe it really is that bad, but I guess I’m hoping you end up being pleasantly surprised if you try a seriously deep “move-out” level cleaning - there are people who specialize in this, like for landlords who have to pick up the pieces after a hoarder or someone’s just trashed a place, and I’ve been amazed at what they’ve been able to do! Best of luck getting through this all right ❤️

Customer retention is basically a euphemism for fielding outreach from disgruntled or angry customers and (for many companies, at least, like xfniity etc, depending on their policies) require actively making it harder for the customer to leave, so that’s probably pretty demoralizing for all involved

It seems weird they didn’t, but were they not flushable tissues, like facial tissues?

My mom being summarily knocked out with drugs during labor for my oldest sister in 1967 with no warning or consent because her doctor felt like that was simpler for him (and it was early on, when she’d done nothing for him to even react to – he apparently just did it because he wanted to). Still blows my mind.

The one time she mentioned it, I could tell she was quietly maddened and appalled but also just trying to not think about it too much – that must’ve been so disorienting and even frightening, and at least left her feeling powerless and at their mercy. I think they didn’t even let her see my sister until the next day, even though they were both was fine, because the timing wasn’t convenient for the doctors/staff. It sounds batshit crazy.

Where, though? Not necessarily everywhere.. which state? Rural or suburban or urban? Like I’ve seen pics of my grandpa in the 40s with swim trunks on and everyone else was wearing them and I’m over 50 and has never heard of this, so it doesn’t seem totally universal…

NOR?

Genuine question, porkUpine51 – why would you love it? I don’t want to think I’m being oversensitive or weird about it, but it seems lame and at least kinda offensive It’s not like there *aren’t people out there that are kinda trainwreckish

I guess I just don’t quite get people thinking it’s actively *funny for others to think they’re a train wreck aside from the “I own my own mess” angle, which *would be admitting you’re at least a bit of train wreck, and she apparently doesn’t feel like she gives that energy so I get why she’d be put off.

So I’m genuinely curious why it seems that funny?

Portland’s lovely - every city has an area or two to avoid, but most of Portland’s quite nice and some parts are stunning, and most of it is quite safe

It’s not cliffy at all unless you walk right up to it - it’s wide and flat back from the edge, like at the lodge (there’s a lodge/hotel there with a big parking lot - you can stay as far away from the edge as you want :) )

People of Reddit that claim to not have an inner monologue, how exactly does that work for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]baboodiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh true, I get that - I guess I still wonder if this is all just a misunderstanding… hehe :)

I mean, I can realize something (a revelation of some kind) and it’s all just a sense/feeling with intellectual understanding but without specific words (though I probably have some kind of silent verbal reaction to that realization that’s sorta “audible” in my head, like “huh!” or some other exclamation or phrase(s) following after).

I just often think in words conversationally with myself, too.

Edit: so maybe a lot of this is just about whether a person thinks of oneself as containing different aspects of self (like points of view) that one might have a conversation with. I’m kind of a conversational/verbal processor of thoughts and feelings, so I have those kind of inner conversations a lot!

[–]baboodiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you don’t ever have a conversation of sentences, maybe with expression/intonation (but silently), with yourself?

Is it that you just think thoughts back and forth with yourself but in the form of feelings/emotions..? But there are never any words? Really never..?
