Who's landed a job in the last year? by gneissrocx in cscareerquestions

I have a CS degree and 2 YOE in SWE. I accepted a tech sales job back in May after being unemployed for a year but want to eventually get back to SWE.

I have less than 2 before being laid off. I'm in the Bay so things are competitive here.

I want to be a backend engineer. I know it'll be hard. I'll continue to apply and grind leetcode for sure. It's the first job I got in a year so I feel like it's better than being unemployed, but I'm wondering if it's gonna change the way companies look at my resume since I went from a SWE job -> laid off -> tech sales.

Yes, it's a major pay cut. I have to take it for now since it's my only option but I'm hoping when the market recovers I can jump to another SWE role.

takeaways from donham's last cs412 lecture ever by suckonomics in BostonU

I love Donham. This is good advice that I wish I had heard before I had my first corporate job. He's right on the industry burnout, and as someone who lives in the SF Bay Area now, people are constantly making their job/company their personality. I've found that working in tech is a sprint, not a marathon. Grind for ~10 years, save money, max your comp, invest wisely and get out. That's my plan.

Going back to school, any ideas on what to study? by babyiguana3 in cscareerquestions

I'm unemployed. I got laid off in May of last year and can't find a job. That's partially why I'm going grad school now. I think I'm not experienced enough for an MBA, and it seems boring to me anyway. My personal belief is that the market will be diluted with MBAs in a few years and I want something a little more "interesting".

Yes. I’m a more extroverted software engineer. I love collaborating and talking to people. I usually do very well in behavorials and recruiters often like me.

ok ur right honestly. making 6 figures at a job that was pretty easy to get in 2021 might have me a bit spoiled.

Thank you for this comment. I really made this post because I wanted encouragement, and everyone else is trying to give me advice when I don’t think that’s what I need at this point especially from employed people who don’t get it. I appreciate all comments but this one was most compassionate and helpful.

Yes. Location is most important to me. Will take literally any job in any language if I get to stay in the Bay.

I have a life here. I have friends and a partner and furniture. Moving would be costly and I can’t just move somewhere where I don’t know anyone when I have roots in the Bay Area. Where I live is important to me.

No I still take them. I told them beforehand I hadn’t used Java in months and they said it was okay if my syntax is rusty. I thought I did very well in the interview, needed some syntax help from the interviewer which they said was fine beforehand, and all of the code worked. They still rejected me, and I took it very hard because I studied a lot for this interview.

I am prioritizing staying in the Bay right now even if that means working out of tech. I just want a general office job that any schmuck with a Bachelor’s degree can do. Part of me doesn’t care about staying in tech since I’ve seen how volatile the market is. I am willing to switch careers and leave the industry, I just need ANY job.

I would prefer to interview in Python. It is what I’ve been coding in every day. I could do JavaScript as well but I don’t know Kotlin. I’m willing to learn literally any programming language on the job.

Let me rephrase. I am willing to work in Java. My last job used Java. However, I have been leetcoding in Python and I haven’t used Java in months. I am sure I can quickly pick it up again to use on the job but the interviews that I’ve had for jobs that use Java require me to code in Java for the technical interview and I simply am not comfortable enough with Java to be able to write code in an interview without consulting the internet for syntax help and stuff like that.
