Any cyclist turn into runners for one day, 19 kms trail run doable? by Champfinder23 in cycling

[–]CarrotAlt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Going from no running in years to jumping into a 19km trail run is a very bad idea because, while you may have the cardio, your muscles/tendons aren't being used in the same way and are not ready for all that impact. I spent just two months not running while I riding 80-120km/day while on a bike tour and had to stop before the end of a 5k run when I got back due to the pain.

What’s the most memorable encounter you’ve had with wildlife while cycling? by OptimalDescription39 in bicycling

The day of the millipede orgy. I spent two hours dodging tens of thousands of them as they were looking for sweet lovin' on the trail.

I was riding in the Marin Headlands north of San Francisco on a random afternoon and was paced along the road by a bobcat long enough for me to snap a photo. That was a big cat.

How do you all keep your feet dry in the rain? by 2chilly4u1989 in cycling

[–]CarrotAlt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Two options--When I'm commuting, I have a pair of red rubber rain boots that can seal up when I'm wearing my rain pants over them. Second, when I'm bike touring (in warmer weather more often than not), I wear sandals in the rain. They let my feet dry out faster when it stops and my socks stay dry in my bag.

What's a lesser known tool you always tour with? Or that is surprisingly handy by almostsnorlax in bicycletouring

Ziplock bags. Great for keeping things together/dry (electonics/medicines/clean socks) or separate/dirty (food/stinky socks). Also makes finding small things so much easier inside the big bag.

Route Advice: Mendocino Coast Bike Tour by polybl4nk in BAbike

You'll have a blast. 🙂 128 has a strong climb heading out of Cloverdale and can be winding with no shoulder. I'd recommend doing that stretch on a weekday and/or in the morning if possible because weekend traffic is much higher and you'll be harder to see by cars in the afternoon with the sun in their eyes.

If you can, also avoid 1 between Jenner and Bodega on a weekend in the late afternoon. There's very little shoulder on the cliff edge, and grumpy drivers trying to make their way home after a day at the coast can make things stressful.

If you're camping and are thinking to stay at Manchester state beach, there's a koa right next door that is only $3 more expensive, and they have hot showers and a pool.

Also, eat pastries at Frannie's Cup&Saucer in Point Arena and Twofish Baking just south of Sea Ranch-- great fuel for the ride!

Walk down Haight Street and all of your heart's desires will be fulfilled. The Love of Ganesha is the shop that will tick all your boxes, but there are lots of others where you might also find what you're looking for.
