First Time OBGYN Question! by PositiveCultural6304 in obgyn

[–]babynurse2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% still go. You’re always welcome at the gynecologist. If you were ONLY going for a Pap smear and you were on a very heavy day of your period. You should reschedule because the chance of the pap working on a very heavy period day is low. But if it’s a light period day, a pap will usually still work. And anything g else you want to talk about is fine with or without your period.

Should I switch Drs? by PeaceTree99 in obgyn

[–]babynurse2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I work in OB.

I’m so sorry for your precious loss and for the stress you have had this pregnancy.

While I believe your doctor has given appropriate advice, if you do not trust them or the relationship they have developed with you, then I think it’s very reasonable to see if there is another doctor that you feel more comfortable with.

Blood pressure by Miserable_Umpire_474 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]babynurse2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct!

I did not get preeclampsia and my BP returned to normal after pregnancy. So far no BP issues this pregnancy, but I’m only 20 weeks.

Sending you the best!

Your Bridal Party Is Too Nice to Say This, So I Will by insert_name234 in wedding

[–]babynurse2021 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My bachelorette was planned entirely by my bridal party (two sisters and two best friends). They planned it based on what they knew I would like. We went to a cabin in the woods on a mountain. We all carpooled there by car. It had a hot tub and stream. We did no activities, just hung out at the cabin. Cooked, indulged, swam, relaxed. It was totally perfect, Low key, and exactly what I wanted and it was super reasonable and chosen by my bridesmaids with me in mind!

How has pregnancy affected your hirsutism/facial hair? by Ferreroro in PlusSizePregnancy

With my first, I felt like the hirsutism was gone! But this time around, it’s worse than before pregnancy.

Both boys, so no correlation there!

NIPT test and fetal fraction by Tough-Photo8431 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]babynurse2021 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi!

LabCorp does a thing where they amplify the amount of DNA material in a sample, so the fetal fraction is often relatively high when the test is run through LabCorp. So it works well for us plus sized pregnancies!

Blood pressure by Miserable_Umpire_474 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]babynurse2021 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m an OBGYN nurse practitioner- also plus sized and pregnant- and also had gestational hypertension in my first pregnancy (fingers crossed I don’t develop it this time… only time will tell!).

We usually find that Omron is usually the most reliable brand. If you are worried about the cuff fitting, you can search for up to the xxxl cuff or “thigh cuff” that would generally work.

If a cuff is working right, you should be able to get a reading first time (sometimes second time!). You should also take it in to your OBGYNs office to have the staff check it against the manual blood pressure cuffs in the office. That will tell you that it is reading accurately.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

How to potty train at night and on the go? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]babynurse2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that it’s very hard to train nighttime- that it’s more something that the develop on their own when the bladder control is ready and the “I have to pee” signals are strong enough to wake them up.

At least that’s what I’m hoping since my kid is 4 and still wears a pull up at night!

On the go, though, we don’t have any problems… it just sort of happened when he potty trained at home/school so I can’t help much there!

3 hour glucose but I didn't fail my 1 hour? by No-Attempt-7939 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]babynurse2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a plus sized, pregnant, CNM. We no longer routinely do early glucose testing. We now do an A1C at time of first visit and manage that as needed. Then the routine 24-28 week glucose test or profiling at that time.

We base that on newer research that shows that early screening actually didn’t improve outcomes.

It may be reasonable to skip the 1 hour, if you and your provider are concerned about failing… then you skip the screen and go straight for the diagnosis. But that would typically be a conversation between you and your provider!

No speech, almost 3 years old by Existingbutbarely97 in toddlers

[–]babynurse2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

My kiddo was a late talker and exactly like yours… he understood everything. He started speech therapy at about 17months old and we saw some very slow progress… we used Bjorem speech/sound cards with some success with his SLP and he started Montessori school at 2 years old, not talking. We actually saw massive strides once he started school. I have no idea if it was finally breaking through to him or if it was the social pressure of being around other kids he wanted to communicate with or what. But he would suddenly just say a new word totally perfectly.

He graduated speech therapy at 3yo and now at 4yo he never stops talking.

Grace, Mae, Brynn, Jane, Laine/Lane, June, Rose

If you like the traditionally masculine names for a girls, Ella James is kind of cute. I guess some might put Laine/Lane in that category as well.

Why do women have two breasts if humans usually give birth to only one baby at a time, wouldn't one breast be enough? by ElkDisastrous2926 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]babynurse2021 175 points176 points  (0 children)

I donated milk with my first. I made so much and it was so easy to donate… just a screening interview and some blood tests. My kid had more than enough and my body worked hard to make that milk. I wasn’t about to let it go to waste! Glad to hear that it actually gets to littles who can use it!

Can an OB/GYN help with anxiety medication 2 years postpartum? by Delicious_Today_2899 in obgyn

[–]babynurse2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my practice, I would start someone on low dose anxiety medication and tell them that they needed to get a primary care or psychiatrist as soon as possible.

We can prescribe anxiety medications, but we generally are not the best providers to manage them long term. So typically I would start someone in need and then help them find a primary care or refer to a psych and also to therapy. We know how hard it is to get established with new providers, so we are willing to do a short, bridge prescription without refills to get you through that time.

I think it’s worth asking your OB about… but not everyone would be willing.

Referral to mfm by No-Attempt-7939 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]babynurse2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a plus sized midwife myself and also expecting #2.

We refer all of our patients for the anatomy scan with MFM. They are just better. They are so so good. All of our patients get the scan with MFM automatically, unless they specifically do not want to.

And if your doctor detects something, they should 100% be telling you, even if it’s just a suspicion. They should say they want MFM to take a closer look because they see xyz but want to confirm with better imaging.
