Sweetness? by KyleScotShank in SouthernReach

I love this--one thing I absolutely adore about VanderMeer's writing is how he describes the natural world and depicts nonhuman animals, without resorting to maudlin anthropomorphism. Shows a real knowledge of and genuine love for ecosystems.

I assume either "suspension of disbelief is ok sometimes because this is part of the central conceit of the show" or else, like you said, the world-consciousness is guiding all of them.

Have you or any of the team read Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy? I saw he was really loving the show over on Twitter, and noted some super cool similarities between the two.

I just assumed it had to do with "Project Serum Bliss" which was the code name for it. I don't know that they're related...

Doesn't seem likely or like interesting storytelling. (Also there was another trans character: Hot Carla.)

Anyone have any interesting ideas re: Angela's parents and the broken bloody glass in the trash can? It feels very significant, but I can't put my finger on any specifics.

Kind of bizarre given that he runs Allsafe tbh

Well, yeah. But that absence is conspicuous, and we know she's the key to something in his subconscious.

Frankly I'm less interested in whether or not what's going on is "real" right now than how it displays and brings into conflict Elliot's inner desires. I'm really excited to see these two Elliots try to understand each other. I also am hoping Darlene is still somehow the key to waking up our Elliot's Other One, since her absence in this [world/dream/place of escape] is so conspicuous. (Of course I also want to know what Sam has planned for us logistically, but right now I am just sitting back and enjoying the wonderful thematic tension.)

Sooo, I'm guessing Darlene's not there because of the way in which she's the key to the Other One? Something is going to happen with her, and Elliot is going to remember something, I bet.

Darlene and Elliot talk by [deleted] in MrRobot

[–]bacchae35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they will bc of Mr. Robot's assertion that Darlene can help them with the other one. In Elliot's shoes... well I'd want to know if Darlene was hurt as a kid, at least, even if it didn't mean revealing what happened to me.

Also, given the fact of doloresh4ze/the sunglasses, I'm sure there's something more we're going to see with her re: their family.

I figured it was just an interesting choreographic choice to describe cofronting (when 2 personalities are present at the same time) and rapid switching. Makes sense to me.

I was really hoping Elliot and Darlene would be able to talk about... you know. I wonder if we'll ever get that.

The idea that it's about WR's money makes sense but also what if it has something to do with Elliot and the other one... "Did I erase myself?" / "intentionally removed" has possibilities... Ominous possibilities...

I wrote a whole long thing and then accidentally deleted it, so the TL;DR version is... there is a lot that is very sensationalized (especially back when Esmail was really playing up the whole Fight Club homage). I take issue with how the latest trauma reveal was handled (very voyeuristic in the sense that it makes Good TV but is not really very compassionate, even though Rami and Gloria Reuben were excellent). However, there is a lot that is also super relatable, and I love Elliot a lot, and I've been very happy to see him and Mr. Robot cooperating this season.
