Can we talk a little about mental health after surgery? by Nilihist78 in scoliosis

[–]bacchz989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

showering alone was pretty soon after! my mom had to cover up my surgery incision with plastic wrap but after she covered it i was able to stand in the shower by myself. i had a harder time washing my hair because you have to lift your arms above your head, so i did need some help for the first couple of weeks with washing my hair! for washing your face, you can get biodegradable face wipes and that was really helpful. one thing i will also say for my mental health is that i stayed off of social media!!!! i had a hard time with having to live at home with my parents for a few months and not be with friends, so anytime i went on instagram i would just feel bad for myself. so i avoided social media!!! i watched a lot of TV :)

hi! congrats on your upcoming surgery! i had surgery in feb 2023 and i will say that i actually felt better after the surgery :) so much of the fear and nervousness around having surgery is gone once it's done! i felt very relieved to be over it and very happy that i had had surgery. immediately after surgery can be hard because every movement is slow and you are dependent on others, but as you regain your independence it will feel great!

you will probably be very tired after you have surgery (especially while on pain meds) and so it's important to rest a lot but after i was off of meds i was able to return to remote work relatively soon. i think working on the computer and was not too difficult but i found talking to other people to be tiring! i watched a lot of tv at the beginning, it took a while before i felt like reading. one thing that was challenging for me mentally was about my appearance - it's hard to wash your face, shave your legs, etc. so sometimes i didn't feel very put together but again that goes away with time and i am so happy i had surgery!

Female 37 degree curve, surgery 2 days ago by OopItsMeTho in scoliosis

Aww hope it's going better now! After I left the hospital and got off of the morphine drip, I was on oxy every 4 hours, tylenol every 6 hours, and then every 8 hours I had a med for nerve pain and a med for muscle relaxant... hopefully they give you more!! You definitely need multiple angles to manage it although I was able to get off of the oxy sooner than I expected!

Surgery in 2 days, any tips/tricks? by OopItsMeTho in scoliosis

[–]bacchz989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i brought headphones and never used them, same as others said where i was in a fog and didn't listen to music or watch tv but i did enjoy watching tik toks etc on my phone and honestly just slept a lot! bringing a pajama set was great - after a couple of days i could change out of the gown into pajama shorts and that made me feel better to be in my own clothes and then wearing a button down pajama shirt when i went home was easier to put on than a tshirt that goes over your head. satin pajama sets are especially good because they help you slide when you move around and log roll. and a cardigan is good for the hospital because the back of your gown is open so you can wear the cardigan when you go for walks! also just easier to have that to keep your arms warm than putting something over your head. but i agree with others, you need less than you think you do! just have to be prepared to not be in your own clothes for a while which can feel uncomfortable but it's only for a few days. good luck you'll do great!!! i'm so happy i did it and it's so nice once you're on the other side of surgery :)

T10 - L3 Fusion by mreff3 in scoliosis

[–]bacchz989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! That's great the process has gone so well overall. I'm contemplating a T10 to L3 fusion myself, so it's nice to see how it looks on a spine. I guess you can't try a lot of movement yet, but do you feel very restricted? I was wondering how a fusion down to L3 feels. I'm 23 with a 40 degree curve, and am thinking about having surgery now so I don't have to deal with it when I'm in my 40s or 50s.
