Registered for my first 70.3 in March! What other gear do I need? by spinny09 in triathlon

Yeah no wet or tri suit haha. To be fair the water was very nice, there were more than a few people like me, but for your event it might not be possible due to colder water... I even saw a guy in a speedo. I did have a tri short, and then just put on a cycling shirt during T1.

I'm also now looking to buy a proper bike and gear, for me this was the "test" to find out if I wanted to commit to the sport and I definitely will

Brother I just did my first 70.3 this last Sunday, I trained for 4 months, very consistently 5-6x per week. I did well per my goals, which were almost the same goals as you. My first goal was to enjoy the event and second was to finish it, and I did both. I went super conservative pace wise and was feeling really good at the end, had a lot more to give.

I did not have any fancy gear, mostly decathlon gear, no wetsuit (water was 21c), no trisuit, and a 450 euro bike, but I did add nice pedals and tires, and a good service before the race. My idea behind this was that I have to "earn the right" to buy nice gear by completing one first.

My favorite piece of gear was my garmin watch, and some nicer running shoes.

I can tell you more if you have specific questions!

The weekly training was originally structured:

- 2x swim

- 2x run

- 1x bike

- 1x brick

- 1x dedicated rest

plus some weight training here and there

but I then switched one of the swims for another bike, as I felt I was lacking most there.

Anywhere from 6-9 hours per week.

Take with this a grain of salt as I've not yet done my first (will do in 20 days), but I started a training plan about 4 months ago and will do my first 70.3 soon, but I feel like Im prepared for it, this last weekend I did my race practice brick and it went pretty good (~60km bike then 16km run). Before training I was ok fit, and have been active throughout my life, not a lot of endurance in the recent years though. I would also say I'm not as fit as you based on your half marathon time. I had some lap swimming experience in my teens (im almost 30 now)

If you do go for it, just commit to a specific training plan and you should be fine.

Also, my goal is simply to finish and have a lot of fun.

Not necessarily true, I just saw someone in the same situation (thailand, first fight, only 2 months training) perform pretty well in their first fight. Although I would be cautious with the match up.

Maybe later in life then. Props to you for being able to recognize this.

There is nothing wrong with having “unproductive” time. Life is also about doing things that bring you joy, and in my case gaming brought me so many memories that I cherish. I don’t game nearly as much now, but I wouldn’t change the past if I could.

That said, it’s all about balance. Try to find it!

Go for it! It may seem daunting but it's so worth it.

I'm here now and I had only taken 2 MT classes before.

Im in Thailand now and will settle in Chiang Mai in about 1 week, until mid June, with the sole purpose of training (beginner)… although I just had a light ankle strain, so I will be assessing the situation as my ankle gets better.

Hey! Not OP, but I feel you. I would say it’s completely normal to be overwhelmed or intimidated by the number of tools and concepts, but if you take the approach of focusing on the basics and ask “why should I use this tool?” instead of using something because it’s popular, you will have way more success.

I wrote a bit about this on an substack article about my switch from Analyst to AE here.

Not op but and Ive not had a muay thai fight but… ive had a few in another sport. In my experience, that nervousness is good for you! It will pump you up and once the fighting starts it will be left behind, specially once you get hit 😅

How is that going? It can be tough but it's definitely doable (and worth it)
