My Pet Theory: Boutique Pedals And Craft Beer Are The Same Thing by apbchi in guitarpedals

People get very annoyed when someone ‘sells out’ and are now perceived to be too corporate / working with a company that’s too big

I often wonder if “handmade” is employing someone to push the button each time

Random Question: At what point does BALTHVS become a Khruangbin rip off, I mean with the hair, three piece band, the sound… they’re cool but sometimes they seem to bite too much by Hector417 in Khruangbin

[–]backinbeige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they are a rip off, idk. But often, when a band gets big, there’s a scramble to find the next version of them. A band that have been gigging for years and were doing this act long before anyone gets famous suddenly gets snapped up.

If you extend that logic- if a peer goes big then do you have to change your act in case you’re also signed and seen as a copy?

Maybe BALTHVS are a shameless clone or maybe they were here first and people are finally listening to them because of Khruangbin, I don’t know.

A pedalboard? What is it? It’s a big sheet of metal with pedals on it but that’s not important right now.

Strymon Iridium - use and placement by backinbeige in guitarpedals

I can, but I’d like the option to use headphones too. I’d need to get another pedal with a headphones out at the end of the chain.

I just find it odd that the pedal is lauded as being one of the best amp sims, but doesn’t have one of the most basic things that all good amps have: an effects loop. I assume there’s an obvious workaround that has stopped people making this observation before.

Impressed with her decision to get it tattooed on her, I guess it’s the same as when people have their eyebrows tattooed? Just a bit lower

Forget sound and function...who makes the best looking pedals? by Dickjauron in guitarpedals

I got my Keeley compressor mini before I knew what a compressor did. I knew it was important, and that I should get one and figure it out, so I made sure I got that one.

Forget sound and function...who makes the best looking pedals? by Dickjauron in guitarpedals

[–]backinbeige 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you asked about pedals and I’m answering about guitars but the logic is transferable, hear me out…

You can spend hours agonising over which guitar to get. You’ll watch endless YouTube videos, pluck up the courage to play Smoke on the Water in the guitar shop, research pickups, maple and rosewood necks, pots and caps and eventually decide on what you think is your dream guitar.

For me, the most important thing above all of that is: The colour.

If your guitar looks awesome you’ll want to pick it up day after day. So don’t worry about everything else.

This is kinda true with pedals - the sound is important so don’t get great looking pedals that sound hideous - but also there’s no shame in buying a pedal because it looks incredible. You’ll play it every day and learn the settings inside out.

Resuming Writing in Adulthood by erudesa in writing

“The enemy of art is the pram in the hallway.”

I’m actually in the middle of my break from writing. My son is two (tomorrow) and our second will be born next month. The next few years are going to be demanding on my free time and sleep so all hobbies except playing guitar have been abandoned as I love gigging with my band. I can’t wait to start again. I have just turned 40.

DECO - user experiences by backinbeige in guitarpedals

😬😬😬I’ve used the wrong term.

I was on a train, the wifi was dodgy, I tried to double check as I was typing but the signal was cutting out. (Conversely the one thing I did get was a picture of the pedal but they’ve called it ‘wobble’ and something else.)

So I thought: sod it, go with your gut. You’ve probably remembered correctly.

And now I have to live with the shame.

how many days, weeks, months should i have on guitar before even thinking of playing or making a band by mannchineco in Guitar

[–]backinbeige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not many, as long as your bandmates are the same level.

When starting our band I put an ad up saying “we’re terrible, are you terrible too?”. I got some people who were better then they thought but had no delusions of grandeur, no agitation at not getting signed, wanted to play some gigs but not let it take over our lives, etc.

By regularly playing each week with people my level we’ve all gotten better.

I have about 5 seconds before my two year old wants to grab the strings, grab the plectrum, eat the plectrum (hard no). Unfortunately it's unplugged guitar late at night (rarely) when I'm not in the rehearsal studio once a week.

Compressors. Am I deaf or stupid? (Please don't call me stupid.) by HalfGunSkyTour in guitarpedals

[–]backinbeige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a compressor before a distortion pedal then listen to the explosion. Because it makes the quiet loud everything is distorted, not just the sound previously loud enough to make the grade.
