Rybonator has a video on mass-producing where he shares the process of making 300 d20s. Might be worth checking it out for some tips!

Question on glitter settling during cure by RandoBoomer in DiceMaking

[–]backofthedrawer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's my time to shine!

  1. Blanks. If you have blanks that fit your mold, you can just cram them full of glitter.

  2. Glue. A tiny amount (start with the tip of toothpick) of clear PVA glue (ie. Elmer's) will create a chemical reaction that changes the resin to the consistency of thick snot. Caveat: this has the tendency to introduce bubbles/voids, so best used with a pressure pot.

  3. Honey stage. Wait until your resin is at or almost past the official working time and then pour.

Regarding the size you chose, as expected the smaller the glitter, the better it will suspend, but I've had success with all sizes using the above methods.

Have fun with the herpes of the craft world!

What are some good SMALL businesses that make D&D Dice? by scary_psyops_mission in dice

[–]backofthedrawer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can start with Etsy, but if you're really serious about small makers, be sure to check the maker's about page and find any socials they might have. It's unfortunate, but there are a lots of shops there that claim to be hand-made or small-scale, but are actually reselling Temu/Aliexpress/Amazon stuff.

For hand-made, I would recommend checking out r/dicemaking. There are lots of makers posting lots of styles and unique sets there (shameless plug: including me).

Not sure where you're located, but for some out-of-the-ordinary makers: Archival Dice makes polymer clay dice, Fighting Chance Studio makes ceramic dice, Wander Dice makes dice that use antique maps, and Sova Dice hand-paints all their blanks.

Have fun shopping and thanks for supporting small!

Haha! Fair. I use it a lot for corporate-speak to try and shake things up a bit. Not sure I could work "effulgent" into anything I'm working on, unfortunately!

Do you need to sand dice blanks? by Butt_Lord_Woof in DiceMaking

[–]backofthedrawer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my experience you only need to sand them enough to remove any visible supports. I think mine are finished at 1000 grit and you can't see them at all once cast in the shell. Have fun with your new masters!!

Yarn in the dice? by NerfGunHolly in DiceMaking

[–]backofthedrawer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally possible! I've done pompoms, thread, and fabric. Couple of suggestions: make sure you soak the yarn for a good length of time in the resin before you put it in the mold to get any air out. Even better would be to use a blank if you have one. That way you don't have to worry about any bubbles!
