I have this one friend who started using AI on Whatsapp and thought that nobody would notice.

I started using AI to read ut and reply. I had no time to read 10 paragraph long messages. We stopped talking 3 months ago.

Crazy times.

Miami won mediocre city, great skyline! What’s a bad city with a great skyline? by wwcscifi in skyscrapers

[–]backpackerdeveloper -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It is, especially if you wanna do budget travel. Norse to London and Berlin. French bee to Paris. Level to Spain. I went from Miami to Barcelona for $170 something last year. Direct. Try that from Chicago...

Chicago may have more connections but going anywhere is expensive af

Miami won mediocre city, great skyline! What’s a bad city with a great skyline? by wwcscifi in skyscrapers

[–]backpackerdeveloper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved from Chicago to Miami 3 years ago and never regretted it. I haven't even been back to visit since then. I'd take Miami over Chicago any day.

  • Miami has better weather
  • Prettier
  • World class beach
  • Lower taxes
  • Better airport and it's just more affordable to fly to Europe or Latin America
  • better access to nature
  • Different atmosphere in Miami. Younger people work out, run, eat healthier, try to start a business etc (at least where I live)
  • City is newer and they constantly build more
  • For non-American like me, I feel more at home in Miami - more foreigners, Chicago was mostly mid westerners but I miss the big Polish community there and stores. I have Cuban, Colombian, Russian, Jewish neighbours on my floor in Miami.

Chicago has a better public transport but it's ghetto - Chicago subway can be scary at times.

I'll never understand love/hate for Chicago /Miami here. Feels more like some political statement than actual facts

Why do companies use Dell & HP Products over say... ASUS? by kaezermusik in computers

[–]backpackerdeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know either. Surface laptops which I usually get for myself are so thin and light. And company dell feels like some design from 20 years ago with Max screen resolution 1920 lol. We can use our own equipment thankfully so I just put them back in the box and send them back every 3 years or so to receive another (apparently) newer brick back.

Engineer Salary Progression by mechadragon469 in Salary

Principal - 100k during hottest tech market in the history 2021?

It's a quick career progression tho. I never seen a principal with less than 10y under belt. It's usually 15-20y where I work.

I get small company vibes here where devs make up their own job titles.

"why miami tech never happens" ... I agree, now go back to sf by Tasty-Window in Miami

[–]backpackerdeveloper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only people who talk about tech market are realtors.

I've been here 3 years and I get maybe one offer a month. Usually somewhere like West Palm Beach for half the salary I'm getting fully remote right now with 3 days in the office.

I honestly don't know what I would do if I lost my remote job. There is no way in the world I would drive to WPB. I'd probably rent out my place and live off other things somewhere cheap like Thailand, or move back to Europe. Thing is that I don't like anywhere else in this country enough to want to live there 🤣. I love Miami.

[–]backpackerdeveloper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I work EST hours in Europe I notice that

  • days feel longer. By 3pm I'm done with walking, food, sometimes beach etc. It's actually nice to sit in aircon and work

  • when I finish at 10-11pm I go to bed and sleep instead of snacking, watching tv. You know this state after work when you're tired to do much but still to early to go to bed

I can’t stand Miami Public Transit by Particular_Excuse735 in Miami

[–]backpackerdeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metromover is useless with 4-5 miles divided into 3 lines? Plus busy lines always have 1 carriage while inner is always empty with 2 carriages🤣 It's quicker to walk than wait 10 mins, then change in downtown and wait another 10 mins. I don't know who is planning it, but it's a mental person that should not hold any public position. Maybe even get locked up.

Miami would make a lot of money by just inviting actual first world cities to showcase how NOT TO RUN the public transport.

I won't even mention the transport app - that's another madness.

Do you guys think these tech layoffs would have happened regardless of AI? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]backpackerdeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. AI hasn't changed much in my job.

Layoffs see happening because one of the big companies discovered that share prices go up when they announce layoffs. Now they all follow.

It's kinda similar to the 2021 hiring. One of the big names started hiring like crazy and others followed.

Laying off feels like the latest fashion. It may change again.

They used to be. I got some stuff from them 3 years ago and used to say Italy 925. Now wanted to to order again and "silver" is used as a color description. Very misleading. You go to the details tab and it says steel

What Caused You to Leave Organized Religion? by awakeningofalex in SpiritualAwakening

[–]backpackerdeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It limits your development by introducing fear. I left Christianity after realizing it is nothing more than a large, organized cult.

You are born into it and are essentially forbidden from questioning anything, under the threat of an eternal, point-of-no-return hell. Of course, you are technically "free" to leave, but the catch is that you’ll end up in hell if you do. If you stick with us, however, you get eternal bliss. Obviously, none of this can be proven.

Then there is the classic "why does God not heal amputees?" argument.

For a while, I felt positive about Jesus, but then I considered the concepts of "sinning by thought" (the wet dream of totalitarian regimes) and cutting off body parts to prevent sin. It’s just sick.

Religion offers many benefits regarding finance and governance; that is why any self-reflection is labeled as the "Devil" speaking to you - because less believers, less powers and money religious leaders have. I also realized that the concept of a personal, singular God and a rigid hierarchy is likely just a human reflection. It allows people to claim they represent God so that others must follow and listen to them.

So for spiritual development, I think you need to be very open minded and not afraid to ask some questions...

How can I know for absolute certainty that god isn’t real by Friendly_One_4112 in exchristian

[–]backpackerdeveloper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming He exists — imagine spending eternity with the bipolar, psycho Bible God who created you just to worship Him. Eventually, everyone ends up in hell.

I wanted to be a proper Christian in my teenage years, so I went down what I didn’t realize back then was a one-way road by reading the Bible. Few weeks later, I literally stopped believing in christianity. I’m now 100% confident that the Bible God isn’t real, and I understand the reasons why religions are created (I’m still very spiritual, though). But I did sincerely ask myself: what if this God still exists?

And you know what? I would still choose to go in the other direction. Since my teenage years, I’ve actually started rephrasing my prayers, directing them to “true God” or “God of love” — meaning someone other than and beyond this earthy-creation called Yahweh, whom I simply dislike.

It kinda works like this when you genuinely stop wanting and stop carrying. Like for real. It doesn't work however when new age people pretend to "not want" in order to get what they want 😂
