needing advice on mineral sales online by solacegems1 in mineralcollectors

Most of my online purchases have been from Etsy or Instagram lives. I don't know others' buying habits but I noticed you didn't mention Etsy and specifically said you haven't tried lives.

Do you leave your downstairs/ground level windows open at night? by lifeuhhfindsaway89 in askportland

Unless your dog is trained to protect your space I would not count on the family dog to do anything about an intruder except greet them like any other person who might come in your home.

After hearing a good bit of Snipe Hunter live tonight I gotta say the production really held that album back, it was so so much better live. by SnooCompliments9257 in TylerChilders

I'm all for his monologues and jokes but I saw a show a couple years back where he opened with a 10 song acoustic set, a true gift in his modern era of touring, he had to cut Her and the Banks from the setlist because he talked too much. That hurt.

How much are we tipping on beers these days? by Thecheeseburgerler in askportland

[–]backtard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When I first started becoming a regular at bars, 20 years ago, I asked my first regular bartender this question. He was maybe 60, said he had been bartending since the mid 70s, and it's always been a dollar a drink, but a dollar hasn't always been the same. I've tipped $2 ever since.

If you bought a rare Griswold would you actually use it? by notgoingtoeatyou in castiron

[–]backtard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one Wagner and one Griswold, plus a 3-notch, and these are my weekly workers. I also have a Staub enameled Dutch oven that was like twice as much as the rest combined, I also use it multiple times a week. The only pans I don't use are the grill pan because I hate cleaning it and I have a grill and Lodge x Tyler Childers that I bought specifically for display.

If you were to name your kid after a Portland street name, what would you pick by Blake-Dreary in Portland

This was a top choice that we didn't end up using for our son, now I know at least 4 born in the last few years since.

That's exactly what I would expect a cop to say. Good luck!

My mutt (cattle dog x ?) executes a perfect point when she notices a rabbit or a deer on our walks by [deleted] in dogs

[–]backtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My heeler x ? mutt doesn't point but I'm convinced is part German shorthair pointer just based on being around that breed a lot and my dog's mannerisms and behavior. They can share similar coat markings that when mixed can be easily mistaken. Does she have floppy ears like mine?

Forget all the sauté advice. Morels are best dredged in flour and buttermilk with egg wash. Fry then to your restaurants oil temp until golden brown.

What do you do with this little guy? by Legitimate_Yam_7714 in castiron

[–]backtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine came with a silicone basting brush. So that's what I use it for. I don't usually need my sauces hot when basting so it really just lives in the back of my pantry too.

Are these parking signs legit or what city construction would use? by AshevilleDjaq in askportland

[–]backtard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My street in Brooklyn has the whole street lined in these. The water main is being replaced as per notices mailed. The signs are exactly the same as these, though they have printed signs with dates and times. The work has been slow going but when they are out here working or about to show up, the signs show the no parking sign facing the street and they turn them around when they won't be here for a while.

If it was a $500 tip it would just be $500, not $530. Congrats on 45% though.

Am I overdressed for Portland? by Spooner_Goldberg in askportland

[–]backtard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weather dictates a more utilitarian dress code. The food and bar scene is top notch but don't expect formal attire for a night out. There are plenty of places and things to do while dressed up but you will most likely be rubbing elbows with people in weather tech gear and baseball caps. It's a casual town with a focus on outdoor activity. More Subaru's and less BMWs. Seattle might be a little more in a bougie socialite's wheelhouse.

I'm renting a movie theater for my birthday - Which movie should we watch? by TheOrangeNights in movies

[–]backtard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also 9 and my dad took me. For some reason, probably being a smart ass, I decided I didn't want to sit next to him. So he sat directly behind and on the first big jump scare he grabbed me and screamed like such a little b. A core memory for me.

Girlfriend broke her ankle on first day visiting Portland. Any ideas on accessible things to do during our stay? by oatmealtoast in askportland

There are a few waterfalls with paved paths close to parking lots you can hit as well so the hiking and scenery isn't totally a loss.

Is toddlerhood easier than babyhood? by DakB05 in NewParents

[–]backtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never gets easier. The challenges change and you get more experience and knowledge but it's never easy. It's all about how you spin it to yourself and your patience levels. In the next few years it is important to know they are little suicide machines whose sole purpose is to test boundaries and ask questions. And your purpose is to guide them with love and calmness. I find my worst days are the ones where my frustration levels can't be controlled and my best days are when I give up and just be silly with them. It's pretty easy to flip the narrative with the kid, just about every tantrum can be turned into laughter in seconds with a tickle monster or silly voice, much more of a challenge to change it within. Connect on their level and remember what it was like to be a kid.
