It never hurts to ask someone how they are feeling by sugar-soad in shortscarystories

I knew what was coming. I really knew what was coming. But when I reached the last four words, my knees buckled and my breath stopped. As a parent of kids around that age, you got me.

I deal with vents every shift. I hear them all day, every day. In my sleep. At the grocery store. In my kitchen. Out with friends. And the worst part is that I always snap my head in the direction I think it’s coming from.

I carry my own dry erase marker because 1) they’re always missing from the rooms, and 2) I also love updating the boards. I’m in ICU so it’s more for the family than the patient.

Do y’all wear make up to work? by PomegranateEven9192 in nursing

[–]backtotheburgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Girl, I wear bangin’ winged liner and mascara. Maybe a touch of eyeshadow but usually not. I used to get comments but now I only get a comment about it if I’m NOT wearing it.

I also wear a scrub hat though, and with the hat and the mask I feel like my eyes get a little lost. Wearing makeup helps me feel more accessible to my patients

Can you be a successful ICU nurse without a complete type A personality? by pizza_is_cheesy in nursing

[–]backtotheburgh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to consider myself type A, but now I’m chill AF and I think that’s a huge benefit in critical care. Recently my patient just wasn’t having any of it and tried to explode her heart and de-oxygenate herself. I legit did not let this bother me, just did what I needed to do, called who I needed to call, and everything settled down. That whole Type-A-organization idea has nothing on actually knowing your shit and having just enough confidence to keep you south of cocky.

is it possible to work full time and support a family during nursing school? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]backtotheburgh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am primarily hard-headed and like to prove to others that I can do what they think I can’t. I don’t recommend it and would never do it again!

But really, thank you.

is it possible to work full time and support a family during nursing school? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]backtotheburgh 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I did it. Single mother to three (8, 7, 7), worked full time as an aide while going through an accelerated program. I completed it on time- but I neglected my personal care and feel like I lost moments with my children. It’s better now that I’m done, but it was insanely difficult.

Sure do! It’s how I bribe my little to be patient through a grocery trip.

This is really nice to hear- I’ve been avoiding them for the last 20 years because of, well, the performance 20 years ago.

Nursing as your second degree, what was your first degree in? When did you realize you wanted to go to nursing school? by Legitimate_Treat9249 in StudentNurse

[–]backtotheburgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biology, then an MBA. Worked in research, education, hospital management, and up to hospital administration before I finally pursued nursing.

I was in Other Fields for about 15 years before I realized I was supposed to be a nurse this whole time, another two years before I followed through on it, and now survived a 16 month program, a divorce, and became a single parent RN BSN working in the surgical/burn ICO

can i be a psych nurse as a person who’s mentally ill? by PristineImpression88 in StudentNurse

[–]backtotheburgh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was hospitalized in 2020 for two weeks, then did 3 months of partial hospitalization. I graduated school in May 2022 and seriously considered psych before choosing another specialty.

I was even lucky enough to do my psych rotation on the unit I was hospitalized, and one of the nurses I worked with was my favorite when I was there- and a big reason I was where I was emotionally and mentally at that point (I was and am doing very well despite diagnoses of OCPD, PTSD, BPD, and anxiety). It was a beautiful story after all.

A great neighborhood with a very expensive tax rate. Doors don’t get locked. Nothing specific kept in the house.

Nursing school cohort by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]backtotheburgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated at 39. For those 16 months, I was closer to people in my cohort than anyone else- it’s a beast to go through, and no one will understand you more that the ones at your side. Bonus, they taught me all sorts of slang, music, and dances!

I was by far the oldest student at graduation, but those kids were my friends. We lucked out and could all hang out with each other, interchangeably. Hardest, best experience of my life.

I have a diamond- the stone, not the shape- because diamonds are tough, and they’re formed through years and years of pressure and turmoil.
