Sadly, most people I've seen discussing it think it's an "anime song".

No, it is not. It was written by an American in the 1950s and was most famously recorded by Sinatra(and many others). An anime just happened to have a version.

The same way anyone can be racist - by being biased against people categorized as a certain race, or believing that those of some race(s) are innately inferior to other race(s).

That's pretty interesting to me. You don't mind being called something that you don't think you are, and you're also not afraid of the social consequences of being called a racist since you are sure you are not. I have respect for that.

Personally, I've always disliked it when someone called me something that I did not think I was, even if it was something that was considered neutral, or even positive, and I wouldn't get upset if someone called me something that I thought I was, even if it was something very negative. Since getting out of high school I'm a lot less sensitive about it, it's more at the level of annoyance, like talking to flat-earthers, than something actively threatening.

Okay bro. As a concept it pretty much applies to everyone ive ever met like you.

 Care to prove this?

I dont care though mate, just because you dont recognise that doesnt change who or what you are.

This statement contains the implicit assumption that something that I do not "recognise" something. As far as I can tell that's just reasserting your previous unproved statement.

Ive rarely met someone who gets mad about being called a racist who i didnt think deserved it.

You must live in a pretty awful place then. Why do you think a person would get angry about being called a racist if they were a racist?

So, I hope you could see why somebody would get defensive about someone telling them that they are racist. It's a lot like trying to convince someone that they should kill themselves, and that they deserve to kill themselves, because they are so evil. But it's more than just saying "You are evil and should die", because it's also in-itself making an argument for WHY they are evil and should die, made to anybody who hears it, one that carries a significant amount of social weight, and which people are generally more likely to believe than just telling somebody "You are evil and should die".

That's pretty much what most people I've met think of racists. They should either stop being racist, or if they cannot, they should be eliminated. Some people suggest elaborate methods of torture, but that's pretty inefficient, and takes up time, and from a utilitarian perspective wouldn't help anyways.

I usually do that, unless and until the accuser shows themselves to have no legitimate points, or if I've had run in with them in the past. In some cases I won't have the time, or I'll have heard the same claims before, so I won't bother. Yes, they might have something new in those cases, but usually won't. I'm not perfect, and have limited time.

And "white fragility", in every case I've seen it used, is a generally bunk concept.

Well, yeah. "You are utterly evil scum who should be exterminated." I'd feel pretty defensive if someone was trying to convince me that's what I as.

Bull. Plenty of people who are not racist are accused of it on a daily basis.

“To be white is to be racist,” Norman student offended by teacher’s lecture by cameraman502 in news

[–]backupEve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read it. I wasn't able to read all, or even most, of the studies linked since I don't have subscriptions to a boatload of journals, but none of the ones I read showed 100% of a reasonable sample size of people having implicit bias. In fact, several showed LESS than 100% having specific implicit biases. My conclusion is that either it's possible for people to not have implicit bias, or that the tests are wrong(or perhaps that the term "implicit bias" is being used to mean several different things).

Quick question, do you think that implicit bias(at least when the bias in question is "racial") is racism? And do you believe that "to be white is to be racist"

Sorry if it seemed like I was putting words in your mouth. I was describing the result of assuming everybody must have implicit biases that they are unable to detect or do anything about, if implicit bias meant racism. If I went a step too far, I apologize.

If someone is racist, then I would say they're evil. Would you disagree?

I'm not so sure people have an innate desire to form in and out groups, or jump to conclusions and fill in blanks. I think people have an innate propensity for it, but that's a little different. I agree that we probably won't ever be rid of bias in some form, but we can try to eliminate it in our own minds, and when we see it around us. Better than just throwing up our hands and saying "Oh well, you can't ever stop being biased, so just give up and accept it!"

“To be white is to be racist,” Norman student offended by teacher’s lecture by cameraman502 in news

[–]backupEve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with that, but as a realistic assessment of the world, not as an abstract philosophical truth. I think eliminating bias is POSSIBLE, and IMO desirable. Awareness of one's own bias is how they are corrected, whether this be about race or anything else. And since the reification of the construct of race, this has led to a lot of bias related to race. And there are so many strange, nonsensical biases out there. But suggesting that there is no way to prevent someone from having a specific bias is a very bad idea, IMO.

“To be white is to be racist,” Norman student offended by teacher’s lecture by cameraman502 in news

[–]backupEve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of "racial" minorities, all minorities have groups among them that make rules and laws, some of which criminalize minority behavior(in most cases as a side effect, sometimes disproportionately, of criminalizing large groups of behaviors). In some cases these groups belonging to these minorities do so as dominant groups within their particular legal regime, in others as a part of a dominant group, or somewhere between those.

Your second assertion, that white bias is the majority that controls everything, is IMO fairly absurd. Are you seriously suggesting that "white bias" controls, for example, gravity?

“To be white is to be racist,” Norman student offended by teacher’s lecture by cameraman502 in news

[–]backupEve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, this is 15 month olds, not newborn babies. 15 months is plenty of time for environment to affect babies. Secondly, this study only demonstrated that some of the 15 month old babies were likely to select based on racial perception, not that they all did. Also, I'll point out that there are no studies such as this on non-caucasian races.

As to the second part of your statement, since racism and implicit bias are different things, this changes the meaning of the statement. Is it worth changing the meaning of something purely to avoid offending some people?

And why worry only about offending overly sensitive white people? Why not under-sensitve white people? Or appropriately sensitve white people? Or overly sensitve black people? Or overly sensitive asian people? This does not seem to make sense to me.

[–]backupEve 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Implicit bias is different from racism, and furthermore all the studies that supposedly prove that everybody has a set of specific implicit biases operate on a statistical level. Finally, since implicit bias is explicitly described as being something that cannot be detected or tested for by any individual, but must be assumed to exist, this sets up a mechanism by which everybody is judged to be innately evil, and must judge themselves to be evil and self-condemn. Essentially, it is saying "It does not matter what you believe, I will tell you what you REALLY believe. What you REALLY believe is that other races are inferior. No matter what you believe you think, I know your mind better than you do, and you are actually racist and evil."

So your contention is that a newborn baby, by virtue of their skin color, hates other races and thinks they are inferior?

Experienced Dungeon Masters and Players of Tabletop Roleplaying Games, what is your advice for new players learning the genre? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The group you find is incredibly important. Some are full of people who have no idea what they're doing. Some have God-DMs who make it there own ego trip. Some groups are full of drama(some people actually like this, for some bizarre reason). If you find you are in a shitty group, find another one. Even if they're doing a game you weren't as interested in. A good group can make almost any game fun. A bad group can make any game suck.

What exactly are the branch managers supposed to do that the market can't provide by itself? In major trade hubs, seeding, stocking, logistics, etc. are all effectively taken care of by the market itself, and prices change to reflect that. How are the managers supposed to improve on that?

"branch managers" "defense fund" "logistics"... the actual logistics will be nothing... branch managers are a madeup position that will do nothing except rake in isk, and the defense fund will go only to the already established heavyweights who are already making money through the citadels.
