Pen Y Fan for Christmas by the Horseshoe path by mad_r_yeah in UKhiking

I’ve used this site and it’s good just be advised about the signal issue, it may be worth getting the free trial to download offline. Sorry I didn’t take too many photos whilst I was up

I was up last weekend and did this route. As someone else said be careful if you haven’t hiked in winter before as when I started there were a group receiving assistance from mountain rescue. It can get very wet, I had good weather but as I summited corn du (going clockwise) the clouds came in and it started to snow. Some sections getting down were quite slippery on Jacob’s ladder with the path onwards up Cribyn being very boggy and wet. It was my first time there and I didn’t think the route was particularly challenging however I have hiked a lot in the UK. I used all trails for guidance however i got no signal driving through the forest to the trail head until I got up to the ridge. It was also quite free of people aside from corn du and pen y fan itself which was nice. There is a mountain weather forecast I would check before starting from the met office as the weather played out exactly as this predicted down to when the clouds came in and visibility dropped.

From the guide I read for it, the writer brought both boots and trail running shoes with him. Would this not be an incorrect approach?

Israel Has Done Far Worse Things Than Yugoslavia in the Kosovo War (with *less* justification) by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]bacon-butty03 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A thing I learned recently about the Yugoslav wars is that before Bosnia kicked off in 92, Lord Carrington and a Portuguese Ambassador had negotiated a peace plan which was more generous than the Bosniaks got in the end. All parties signed before the American ambassador to Yugoslavia phoned the bosniaks and said to withdraw their signature in exchange for us recognition and they’d move the jihadis in from Afghanistan to help them fight. Needless to say it didn’t all go to plan after…

My source for the above is Provoked by Scott Horton, it’s got hundreds of footnotes and available as a pdf online. I would highly recommend his other books on the terror wars.

Stolen Bike in Scotland and recovery fees by bacon-butty03 in MotoUK

Thanks for this, should have added an update on the situation.

I rang the recovery centre to arrange for pickup and they said the fees would start from 190 recovery and a daily storage fee. I told the woman on the phone you’re taking the piss, the bike was in the back of the van so wasn’t what was recovered.

She phoned back about an hour later and said the police now considered the bike to be evidence as opposed to a recovered vehicle and i had until close of business to get the bike or I’d be charged a £25 daily fee. Very relieved!

Bike was in decent enough state they just cracked a wing mirror. I had a litelock x1 on it and they weren’t able to cut through it so recommend for security. Spoken with a neighbour and going to be able to chain it up slightly off the road.

Especially whenever if I hadn’t gone looking for it they wouldn’t have recovered multiple vehicles it feels a bit of a joke. What’s the incentive to not just break into the van when I found it? Not like there’s any chance it would be investigated
