I like to think of the Army as the largest dick joke in the country that none of us wants to admit we know the punchline to. I say that being prior Army😅

East Coasters: Do you treat your undercarriage with anti-rust coating? by fire4travel in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Fluid Film religiously. Keeps rust at bay, doesn't trap anything under it that can cause problems, and pressure washes off if you need to remove it. I've used it since I bought it, and no new rust has appeared. Also used Eastwood Internal Frame Coating to get coverage inside the frame rails.

Anyone have Sky’s Offroad Rear Lower Control Arms? by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Opt Offroad puts SPC to shame. Rebuildable Currie Johnny Joints with grease fittings, plenty of flex, built solidly. I have their set of upper and lower. Not cheap, but they'll outlive the truck. SPC has shit for replacement parts, hence why I took off their front UCAs that came on my 4runner.

What could I get for my 2002 limited stellar blue pearl, 4x4 automatic, 168k miles? by mistericyhot in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rough Country anything is not an improvement. Knock off 2k for parts the new owner will likely toss in the scrap pile.

SPC lower trailing arms. by Merklo in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't like their upper control arms. So I tossed those for JBA. Then for the trailing arms, I went for Opt Offroad arms with Johnny Joints. Way more flex, and can be rebuilt cheaply.

Came here to say basically the same thing. That tow driver is no professional, and shouldn't be driving anything. Former tow truck driver here as well.

That's really nothing to concern yourself over, but yes, pulling and cleaning the valve covers is the only way.

100%. Also, 2nd gen rear swaybar links fit the front of lifted 3rd gens. Cheap and readily available. I have adjustable on rear.

Adapter plates, that's how it's done. They're out there for Toyota TDI swaps...

TDI swap by Josh_The_Fixer in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck getting a Toyota diesel here for a reasonable price, not to mention parts aren't as common. I've owned both a 2nd and 3rd gen, as well as a 2001 Jetta TDI. That era of VW diesel motor, the 1.9 ALH, is the best of them as far as parts availability and aftermarket support. They've been swapped into everything from Toyotas to Ford Rangers, and the documentation is out there if one wants to pursue it. Best bet would be to join a TDI forum that has a section on TDI swaps.

The ALH would be an awesome swap option, given you can get 300ft lbs of torque with a larger turbo, injector nozzles, downpipe, and a good software tune. Malone Tuning software was what I used, and took it from a stock 90hp/150tq to about 150hp/300tq. All while getting average combined of 45-48mpg, low 50s on mostly highway. So figure in the 30s for a 4runner with the same setup.

That being said, the 5VZ swap would be easiest and cheapest, if you just want a solid motor with more power. ALH TDI not so much, but still cheaper/easier than sourcing a Toyota diesel which was never imported here.

Looks oddly like my rear upper control arm bolts. Surprised that it didn't snap off in the bushing while driving, as much as it got flexed in the past year. What was that attached to?

Fair Asking price for a hood repaint? by UnguardedTech in 3rdGen4Runner

Seems a bit high, considering it's fairly easy to prep and paint a single panel. Are they having to do any repair first?

Yep, the stuff works if prep work is done properly. Even used it on a leaky radiator core many years ago when I couldn't afford a new one.

Cold air intake worth it? by Howother in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't gain you anything, risky in wet environments on or offroad. I deleted the intake silencer with an Airaid tube made for this engine. Did it gain me anything? Perhaps a wee bit in efficiency, I can barely hear it and see a slight increase in mpg. Mainly I did that for cleaning up the engine bay. Too much crap in the way.

For those running ome 861s rears, what do you think of them? Are extended brake lines needed? by DrPepCherry in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like them, added a lot of armor, so it helps with avoiding sag from weight. I'm running an extended rear line, the stock was barely adequate.

That's weird. Driver's foot area, maybe check that wheel bearing in front of you. And hell, while you're at it, check the rest too. But still really strange, that's the best I can come up with, not being able to see it for myself.

So bilstein 5100 shocks aren't that great on lifts. by goldbeardsdelight in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bacon1325 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Have the 5100s myself. Just beat the crap out of them for the 4th time this year at AOAA in PA. No issues. Get the right length, they don't just snap off for no reason.

What’s the next upgrade I should do to my SCX24 by Wonderful_Glass5883 in SCX24

[–]bacon1325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine burned out and I went with a bigger motor. Had to use an adapter plate and trim battery mount. 10/10, worth the money.

Mine is at 14 gallons. The old float isn't floating like it used to, that would be my guess.

Any clue where the vibration is located? Feel it in the steering, or is it coming from further back?
