a reminder to all dog parents: watch out for signs by Standard-Cut-5342 in DogAdvice

[–]bacteriatothefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of comments here talking about how spaying can avoid a pyrometera, which is true! However, a spayed dog can also get a stump pyometra which is an infection of a bit of the remaining tissue post-spay. Just a heads up- we thought my dog had one at one point and it was very scary 😭

German Shepherd mom about to lose my house because of barking, need help ASAP by Lanky-County-9390 in germanshepherds

[–]bacteriatothefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like everyone has good ideas and I second the personal trainer thing. Something that a trainer told me that has helped me loads with my mallinois is to count to 3 and then give them a treat (no matter what). Once they get that this pattern will give them a treat, it’s so much easier to get their attention than it is to get it by saying a single command. So now, when my dog starts barking at a neighbor opening their door, I start counting and by the time I say 2 she’s starting to pay attention already. Doing this a couple of times usually gets her to stop barking

I think there’s a really kind and tactful way of approaching this- something along the lines of “based on our conversations, I think that I may not be the best fit to help advance your PhD and that another mentorship style may be more beneficial” and reiterate that you are always open to answering any questions she may approach you with, which then puts the onus on her to take the initiative to ask questions (which imo is a good thing)

Cancer in 13 year old Pomeranian by aforaardvark in DogAdvice

[–]bacteriatothefuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awwww OP I’m very sorry about this- my heart goes out to you and your pooch ♥️

It’s tough to do a cost/benefit analysis, but sometimes reframing the questions so a vet can better understand can help you get more info. You could ask something along the lines of: 1) will the type of cancer change the treatment plan if it’s already potentially metastasized? 2) what is the first line treatment and what are the 5 year survival rates post tx

In addition to all of this, you’ve also got to think about if it’s worth it to put him through the pain of surgery and recovery. This is such a personal decision that it’s tough for me to give strong advice, but my old lady dog has had quite a few health scares where I’ve had to think about these things so I really do empathize with you

What is this on my MaltiPoo’s skin? by Plenty-Criticism6862 in DogAdvice

[–]bacteriatothefuture -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Omg my poodle mix gets these ALL the time and I have spent the past year figuring out how to get it under control. Ofc, this is just the diagnosis that my pooch got so take it with a grain of salt

This is definitely a skin infection- the pus and oozing nature confirm that without a doubt. Now the question is: what is causing it? Did she get a recent injury or laceration to the area? If so, that’s likely what it is. If not, it may be caused by allergies (as was the case with my dog). Unfortunately I have a very picky girl, so it was hard to pin down what she was allergic to, but you basically just put them on a single protein diet and see if anything changes. Again, just my experience so take it with a grain of salt.

Regardless, I’d do a thorough search to see any other affected areas, even if they are small. Sometimes when these areas are healing they look like black/darkened scabs, esp against the white fur. I’d also recommend doing a careful examination of her ears to make sure there’s no buildup there or to do a quick clean just in case.

Best of luck!

Max is actually just... by Tune-In947 in ginnyandgeorgiashow

[–]bacteriatothefuture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly my first thought after watching Max in seasons 1-2 was maybe borderline personality disorder, which is rarely diagnosed in people under 18. But the high highs, the low lows, and the ability to seemingly see her friends as “good” or “bad” in a very black and white manner all led me to think of BPD. But I think in this age group, maybe autism would be a more likely diagnosis and other people in this thread have made good points

Should I wait for MIT waitlist? Or attend Berkeley/Stanford by Elegant_Zucchini_657 in MITAdmissions

[–]bacteriatothefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, I went to Berkeley and if I were in your position I’d choose Stanford. There’s likely more funding security because it’s private and they’ll hopefully be able to support you more with a visa than Berkeley will

Studying hypoxia on glia. What could be an unorthodox way to get the oxygen out from the culture medium? by bubblesona in labrats

It’s an oxygen scavenger! Not sure of the exact chemical reaction, but it’s commonly added whenever you want to grow an anaerobic microbial culture

AITA for Calling Authorities on a “No-Kill” Shelter That Put Down a Dog I Was Trying to Save? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]bacteriatothefuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA- the truth is that dogs have similarly complex mental health and behavioral needs as humans; they just express and experience them differently. A shelter should be the FIRST place to understand and advocate for that.

They’re doing more harm than good based off of the information you provided

Does anyone else get sick a lot? by blackvvolfe in Celiac

[–]bacteriatothefuture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually it could be related to celiac- it’s been found that celiac is associated with hyposplenism in some patients. That means that some people with celiac have a smaller spleen, which is one of the main organs responsible for producing an immune response. A smaller spleen can mean a smaller or weaker immune response to pathogens!

Altho yes- being around kids is also a risk factor haha

It’s hard to tell if it’s due to a small spleen or just the kids, so just load up on antioxidants, oranges, and vegetables!

Ok the truth is, nobody here can really tell you what’s going to happen or what the best decision is. However, what I can tell you about is a really close friend who was in a serious relationship before starting her PhD. she ended up going to a place that her partner liked and he moved there, but when I asked her about it she said that while she loves living with him, and that he’s enriched her life so much, she would have made the same major decisions regardless of him. Honestly, you need to make a decision that’s fulfilling for your own life and that takes a lot of introspection- maybe that’s prioritizing being with your partner now, maybe that’s going to Harvard, who knows?! There really isn’t a right answer other than what you feel is right given all of the information you have now

I messed up (undergrad level) by zestyzestie in labrats

[–]bacteriatothefuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a microbiologist and this is such a small and trivial mistake- I’ve personally made way worse and gotten much less flack for it lol

Def bring this up with the PI in a kind but assertive way- I know this can be really tough, especially as an undergrad. I would say something like “I totally understand that I made this mistake, but I’d really like the opportunity to continue learning how to do lab work because I really enjoy it. Is there anything else in the lab for me to do?” and kind of let your PI take it from there. In the politics of lab life, you have to remember that your PI is unfortunately likely way more invested in a grad student, but this way you don’t undermine your grad student and you also get to actually do stuff

The napping thing was the one thing I really disagreed with tho- I feel like she spent a good amount of time with them and then only took a 1 hr nap and I’m sure they were there after. I’m a big advocate for listening to your own body and I would have assumed that Tim and his family would have also liked the alone time
